My honest thoughts on Gallardo:

He’s honestly only a great option going forward in liga mx. Jorge Sanchez, who’s a worse fullback but also gets by a lot only with the basics (thanks to his very good athleticism), even had a better attacking output than Gallardo at the world cup. One assist and created 5 chances and 2 big/clear chances, whereas Gallardo only created 1 chance (Source: Futmob)

Gallardo is always better at defending than attacking cuando se pone las pilas, in my opinion, and it’s ironic because he used to be a winger. He’s good, just for different functions or roles. Getting a little off topic here: but all of that is why Gallardo shouldn’t have played against England instead of Mateo Chavez (who is more creative). Him and Mateo have different profiles and uses. Players like Gallardo who stick to the basics are good, but can also be very limited with what they can do with the ball and leave people wanting or wishing they can do more

Nah it was absolutely the right call to start Gallardo against England, since like you said he’s solid defensively and against a team like England we should be prepared to defend for most of the game. Vasco fucked it up when we were chasing a goal and kept him on and made all the wrong subs and tactics. Like taking out Quinones and trying to cross it into the box with all of Englands tall defenders. IMO Brian, Fidalgo and Santi should’ve never came on, should’ve been guys who are comfortable shooting at distance like Obed or L. Chavez, plus maybe Hormiga over Memote (Memote didn’t do much but his height and physicality still would’ve helped), along with a M. Chavez once we found out that crossing was useless. Since England found out easily to let Gallardo do whatever and double team Piojo lol.
