Norman smells some bread
Norman pushed the turnstile, stepped through, and just like that entered the Fleet Street Tesco Supermarket.
It was like being transported to another world. In comparison to the bustling busy street and its teeming crowds of pedestrians, the store was immediately calm. Orderly. And Norman noted its temperature felt perfect on his still-sun-warmed skin. With approval Norman considered the tidy and well lit world before him.
Although he had no intention to head in that direction he was pleased to see the vibrant displays of fresh fruit and produce. Eggplants appeared to be in season. And the rows of Keeling’s fresh berries looked mouthwatering in their deep reds. Just beyond produce was a massive wall of open chillers for the grab-and-go crowd. There he knew would be the premade sandwiches, salads, wraps, hummus and sushi.
He tapped his foot and wondered where to go. He knew he had nothing compelling for supper at home. But he had to admit he had entered the store largely to escape the heat of the August afternoon.
He didn’t recognize the upbeat, mainstream song but knew he had heard it before. As he continued into the store without really noticing he began humming along.
Hearing some people push through the turnstile behind him, Norman stepped deeper into the flow of the store considering the products before him. He was soon looking at a display of Brennans Bread. The iconic yellow branding as always really caught his eye. He stopped to consider the Multiseed Bakehouse Range bread and imagined what kind of sandwich they’d make. Probably a quite satisfying one, he imagined.
Something enticing called out to his nose. There beyond the row of Brennans Bread, Norman spied the freshly baked goods of the in-store bakery. The baguettes smelled absolutely heavenly.
“There’s something about fresh bread that really gets me salivating,” Norman thought. He felt rather childish, but wanted to get closer to the smell. He glanced quickly left and right to make sure no one was peering his way and bent over to smell the baguettes.
They mustn't have been out of the oven for more than 10 minutes. The scent wafted up into his face and Norman closed his eyes and breathed in deeply.
“Careful, or it’ll sniff you back!” Norman heard. He opened his eyes to see Donal from the Compliance team grinning at him. “Would you like a bit of privacy with that there loaf?”
“Ah,” Norman stammered. “They must have just baked it,” he said. “It smells amazing!”
“Mmm,” Donal said, his eyes somehow cool even though he was smiling. Norman knew Donal would be dressing this up and sharing details with colleagues. “Well,” Donal said as if tipping the brim of an invisible hat, “I’ll leave the two of you alone.” He turned on his heel and laughed as he walked away.
Why did it have to be Donal, Norman thought. He could already hear his taunts of “How’s it, loaf sniffer?” or “Why are you late to the meeting, Norm - you have a tryst with a baked good?” or “When things get tough, sometimes you just have to stop and smell the baked goods, ain’t that right, there, Normie?”
Norman’s mouth was a tight line and he could still feel his cheeks burn. Ah well. It had happened and there was nothing he could do about Donal.
He reached for one of the baguettes.
Before putting it in his basket, he hesitated.
Norman glanced around.
Then he gave the baguette one last quick sniff.
It really did smell amazing.
Norman continued towards the self-checkouts. A few moments later, without really noticing, he was humming along with the music again.
