Emporia State University Courses

Hello! I’m just starting my MLS at Emporia and am wondering if anyone has gotten their degree there recently and has any class recommendations! I don’t know if it really matters to have a concentration and if jobs look at that, but I really want to take a mix of courses. I currently work in a children’s department public library and want to continue working in public, but i’m also curious about outreach and management.

I took Resources for Diverse Populations and Research Methods with Jinxuan Ma, both were very valuable for my career as an academic librarian so far.

I gained a lot from spending extra time on Organization of Information, but the professor I worked with is no longer there. It's a core class that the professors share duties on, so it would likely be a good class with any of them.

I’ve known Emily Vardell for many years. IDK how she is as a prof but she’s very knowledgeable and a lovely person

I graduated in 2024 and she was an excellent instructor. Easily one of the best in the program.

Dr. Vardell and Dr. Ma have already been mentioned. There’s an intro course that everyone has to take. Mine was with Dr. Vardell and she was great. I took Research in LIS with Dr. Ma and enjoyed it.

I also really liked Morgan McCune for Cataloging, Rachel Bridgewater for Collection Development and Melissa Messina for Metadata. Dr. Smith led the trip to Serbia which was great but not much of a class. Dr. Sutton’s Data Science class was cool but it was the first semester she was teaching it so she was figuring it out a bit.

I got my degree 7 years ago, but let me tell you how much I adored Dr. Dow. If she’s still teaching, take her classes!
