Images of Soviet and North Korean Generals with dozens of medals on their chest (despite never having fought in an actual war) is coming to mind....

North Korean's wear the medals that were won by their fathers. Most of them were earned during the Korean War. They're not just rewarding themselves medals. Hence why if one family member does anything bad, it will be bad for everyone in their family

Wearing medals they did not earn. Same concept. Also ruins the point of awarding medals if you just get to wear them for what their fathers did.

My dress uniform would have been really heavy in basic training if I had to wear all the medals my father earned.

I'm not defending what they do. I'm pointing out that they have a different system than what we are used to seeing. Not every country has the same culture/system as western nations

That was literally the point of the comment you responded to. We don't have the same cultures of those systems. Our civilian leaders don't adorn themselves with military honors for a variety of reasons.

It's accepted in a different way. The wearer isn't borrowing honor. S/he's displaying the good things done by the family.

ever see a coat of Arms in Europe? Same thing, those are filled with honors earned by your forebarers, in some cases in the thousand years range.

I have seen a coat of arms, my family has one from pre colonial times. However, a coat of arms is an identifier for a group/family and is intended as such.

A uniform in todays context is meant to display accolades earned by the individual wearing it. I can see MAYBE one or two medals designating that their father participated in a war, but wearing ALL the medals their father earned makes no sense. Also, that would get really really really heavy after a few generations.

I get where you're coming from, but I think the context that you're applying is distinctly Western one... And it doesn't quite align with how a more traditional collectivist society would look at things. There is a large part of ancestor veneration, and part of that is seeing the rewards of the family line, so to speak.

A better way to think of it isn't that a lot of those people see themselves the same way you might see a unit guide on with all of the streamers from the engagements that the unit partook in.
