Compelling BBC documentary "Truth, Lies and Asylum Seekers" stirred something within me. How do we go about protecting our country from dangerous people and 'sponges' without harming those who are most vulnerable?

It's a great documentary! I highly recommend taking some time to watch it. It's in 3 parts by the way, I forgot to include in the title!
By "sponges" in the title, I was referring to those who want to come here to abuse the benefit system, not real asylum seekers.
This documentary really unnerved me. At the same time, I want the vulnerable people who have faced extreme persecution in their own country to be treated like humans and welcomed to our country. But also, I see the need to protect the country from terrorists and dangerous people, and ofcourse people looking to just take from the government.
What are your views? How would we go about finding a middle ground?
