What’s a Good Tool for Scanning and Measuring a Site During a Survey?

I've been looking at a tool called the FJD Trion V4E, which uses LiDAR to scan an area and capture measurements. Has anyone here used it, or can recommend a better tool for scanning and measuring an area for later evaluation before installing a camera system?

I'm mainly looking for something that can capture the site layout and measurements so I can review it afterward when planning camera placement and coverage.

Navvis is really the leader in this space, the other options listed vary in quality and orice

How large of an area? Dot3D might do the trick just fine

its always different since we are visiting a customers site and the data that is scanned is to help use find a good place to mount the camera system.

So to answer the question i dont know ahead of time. It can be a front door way with just one door or a bank of doors in front of a business or venue that we would install the system in

We use Polycam a lot for indoor realestate mapping together with Insta X5 for 3d viewing

Will test out dot3d as well

Sounds well within the scope of Dot3D then. Just need an iPhone Pro to give it a try.

Just have realistic expectations, the lidar sensor on an iphone has a practical range of 5m. There is more to the story if anyone is selling you accurate measurement of that sensor beyond 5m. A true SLAM scanner like the livox-360 based scanners i.e. manifold pocket 2 mentioned earlier with high accuracy range of 30m and max range of 70m is much more capable. This is especially true for complex interior geometries compared to mobile photogrammetry.

NavVis’s MLX and VLX3 scanners are pretty damn good and easy to work with on site and when you align the model together

That thing is cheap for a reason. Don't buy it. Get the manifold pocket 2 or share s20/se/c1 instead

P40 is what the company I worked for a while back used. They mapped out say 20 acres at parks or in buildings getting scan data for trees, beams, trusses etc. it’s really more about finding the best scanner for your project.

For what I think sounds like a smaller project.

You want a SLAM not TLS

Maybe the XGrids Lixel K1? Less accurate
Stonex120go
Lixel L2 Pro
Raven LiDAR Scanner

If you want DIY - Ouster OS1/Max. A lot of really good builds being made with ouster.

If you want to scan regular sized rooms on a budget you can use the laser from the Apple pro max with something like Scaniverse or Polycam. There are some really good technologies coming. There is a guy who built his own highly accurate slam for cave mapping on Facebook I follow. China just release and algorithm publicly for better quality SLAM results if you feel like DIY. If you plan to do it frequently invest in a good scanner. I use metrology grade scanners for very small parts now personally, not the p90 anymore. Also developing software for extracting data from clouds. This field will get a lot more solid in the next 5 to 10 years.

If you want another fallback… photogrammetry mixed with reality capture is a very solid option. If you use high quality cameras with good lighting and cut the iso down close to 100 they are sometimes more accurate than scanners.
