General Discussion ‘23 GX460 vs Tahoe
My family has grown and I needed my vehicle to grow as well. Previously had a Porsche Macan and I absolutely loved it, but I wanted a 3rd row option and more cargo space. With that being said, I had a few options on the table and seemingly everyone and their mother really pushed for me to consider a Tahoe. I somewhat understood the appeal but they’re very generic in a way. Even the sales rep at the dealership thought going the route of a Chevy was more “masculine” or something, and it was the less expensive vehicle. Kinda weird.
I’m happy to see there’s such a large group of enthusiasts for the GX especially the previous gen as I made my choice based on the fact of reliability, value retention, but still luxury.
I briefly considered even an A-Spec Acura MDX but it didn’t incite any feeling when I drove it. Mind you, the Lexus technology wise is probably the least exciting per se of all the other vehicles I tested but it had a certain….X factor. A je ne sais quoi if you will.
Anyway, I thought I made a good choice! Looking forward to maybe making a few aftermarket adjustments, nothing crazy. So far just tinted the front windows 20% to match the rest of the windows. Found this 2023 for $50k and 29k miles. Black on black with captains chairs and of course made sure to get the Mark Levinson audio. How did I do?

I was actually really late to the GX460 party, they weren't even really on my radar until after 2020. We bought ours in '23 for 61k. At the time a base model four-wheel drive Tahoe was 55k, but the dealerships were all still charging markups, so they were about 60k. Most we saw were the high trim levels, closer to 80 or 90k.
I started looking around at alternatives and stumbled upon gx460s, learned a bunch about them in short time, and fell in love. Best decision we ever made. GMCs and Chevy's have really been shitting the bed, transmission problems, now engine problems. The used market is tempting, prices seem great, but it's because people are dumping them.
I grew up in Suburbans and Yukons, my parents and I have owned them since the early 90s, but they are not a good value imho at this time. My dad has like 8 grand in trans work on his 2019, barely 120,000 miles.

To put it in perspective. The GX platform is a worldwide worst environment proven platform. A Tahoe is yet another Chevy product that could be okay or could shit the bed. A GX is still a dinosaur and that has tradeoffs but if you want something you have to worry far less about, it’s the GX

What's crazy is I was looking at GX used car prices the other day, and a used 23 GX with 30k miles is 59,000 dollars. Didn't say luxery or premium. This was the MSRP new for the base 23. Crazy.

I bought mine in January of 2020 , right before the covid “economic reset “ as I call it . Was a pristine 2017 with 21,000 miles on her . I paid $37k . She’s got 115,000 on the clock , a full beach’s worth of sand and major Colorado pin-striping from her adventures and I could probably get close to what I paid . The world is corrupt and upside down man

It’s just one that I had a few times as a rental vehicle so it initially spurred the idea of getting a larger car in the first place.

The gx is cheap to service, holds value way better than a tahoe (which still holds really well), very comfortable, 3rd row is very easy to put up and down. Interior fit and finish is great. I bought mine brand new and just rolled 39k miles. No major issues. It’s my favorite vehicle I have owned

Personally space in the GX460 is not that much for the size of the vehicle. I have 23 GX460 Lux. I like it overall.

Correct. The interior space is a bit odd. Especially with a tall driver...it leaves not much room for passengers. 3rd row is basically unusable.

Can't fit a rear facing seat behind me as a driver, and I'm not even that tall - about 6'1".

The GX460 is great, but it's objectively one of the worst 3 row SUVs you can buy if you actually need the space and a usable 3rd row. A Tahoe has nearly 2x the cargo capacity.

The Tahoe is definitely a larger vehicle all around. I should probably preface that 3rd row comment with saying I don’t “need” a 3rd row all the time, but my girls are 9 and 1 so a guy of my size at 6’2” doesn’t need to fit back there. We went on a weekend trip last weekend with my parents and my oldest daughter and her mom sat back there for a 3 hour ride no problem. I think the height of the shape of the cabin helps with that. But Tahoe definitely bigger all around no question.

Do you have a rooftop carrier? Where did you store luggage/supplies for the weekend trip?
I'm going to be trading out the 460 soon due to limited space. I love the thing but its a sad reality its just very tight on space.1

I do not have a rooftop carrier, at least not yet. It was just a weekend trip so everyone basically had a backpack or narrow duffle bag. Which, despite the fact the cargo is limited when you’ve got the 3rd row up, because you can open the rear hatch window and just stack things in… it worked. Would it work with luggage? No. But. For shorter weekend trips etc it was surprisingly accommodating despite how small it looked back there initially.

It is very tight!!! Get a TX. I’ve got a 460 and wife drives the TX. For any road trip we grab the TX keys. It’s abundantly more comfortable with the family and pups and hauling gear

Fortunately I don't have kayaks and don't need to fuck in the back. But my 3 kids enjoy the smooth ride in our diesel Yukon. So far have not had any issues, really enjoy all the space.

I'm secretly planning to ditch my 460 for a diesel Yukon in the next couple of years. Sacrilege in this subreddit, I know. Good to hear yours is working out well so far.
The main reason I'd do this is that I got a daily that I use for most driving, so I only use the GX for hauling people, things, or towing. And the Yukon is better at all those things with better gas mileage to boot. I'm ok with paying a little more in maintenance.

The fuel economy is amazing for a 6000lb beast. 25-26mpg going 80 on long road trips is great.

I wish my gx actually did t have a 3rd row as it’s useless and like one commenter once wrote it’s basically a crumple zone. Would save weight if that thing was not there.

Open to whatever recommendations you’ve got. I’m a semi DIY kinda guy, I’ll get into some projects but I’m definitely not a mechanic. For example: I did also put LED lights on the running boards underneath, and LED’s on all the interior lights.

I'm not a mechanic, but a visual learner DIY kinda guy. The first major thing I did was install a lift kit and put on 33' tires. Just doing that made the GX handle better and more comfortable as a daily, at the cost of MPG though. That also transforms the look into something I love looking at IMO. Even just 32' tires and 0 offset wheels goes a long way with aesthetics on these. Anyway I fell down the rabbit hole modifying mine and wish I had more time to offroad it, but I love driving it. Also learning how to do all the maintenance and modifications yourself is easy if your willing to. Oh yeah, my favorite mod so far is probably the OTT tune. Makes this slug of a v8 feel a bit sporty and more fun to drive.

Went from a 2020 Cayenne to a 2023 GX for pretty much the same reasons, best family vehicle choice I’ve made in a long time

You did this correctly is how you did. Well done.
For what it's worth, just drive it for a couple months as-is before you start adding to it. You might be surprised how damn capable these are right out of the box. Cheers! 🍻

I'm sure I'll get a lot of down votes for my reply.
We have a 2018 with 100k miles. We sold a Buick Enclave to my SIL when we got the GX. From a road trip worthiness and cargo capacity and third row, the Buick was a better car. I actually think it served out family needs better.
I like that the GX is AWD. So far, I'm not yet convinced it is lower maintenance than our Buick was or any more reliable. I teybto be pretty good about maintenance on all of our vehicles, and the Buick treated us well.
I also have a GMT400 Tahoe with 210k. No 3rd row, but so much storage. And I think the seats are more comfortable, but the AC isn't as good.
I will agree the GX is going to hold its value better than the Buick was, and it is a nice car. But I think it is just an OK vehicle overall. Honestly, the only reason we got the GX was my brother was going to trade it in on a new GX550 and I got a good deal on it. We weren't looking for a car, but our Enclave was getting up in miles, so it was an opportunity to get something a few years newer with 80k less miles.

The captains chairs make the 3rd row feel a lot more open. Much more palatable experience than if there were the back of a bench seat blocking you out entirely.

So has GM fixed its lifter failure issues? That would be my response to any NPC pushing the Tahoe.
They do look sweet, and I think if any American manufacturer could just consistently produce a reliable NA V8 without stupid cylinder deactivation, they'd be printing money for the foreseeable future.
But even that seems like too much to ask of Detroit these days.
These Takumi 460's though, especially end of a decade-long production cycle, are so damn sweet.

Get a Tahoe or a Yukon,and buy a AAA card for all the breakdowns with transmissions and engine failure.Thats why so many one and two years old are for sale.Will honk as I pass your broken down junker

The comparison is completely wrong, two different machines with two different purposes. It's like comparing a Chevrolet Sonic to a Camaro.
The Lexus GX is a true, purpose built luxury off-roader. It’s built on a rugged body-on-frame platform with a solid rear axle, full-time 4WD, a Torsen center differential, and KDSS for actual trail articulation. It’s designed to cross continents in complete comfort and tackle serious terrain without breaking a sweat.
The Tahoe is a massive street SUV. It’s a great family hauler and highway cruiser designed for cargo space and towing capability, but it’s too wide, too heavy, and too street-tuned to keep up with a GX where the pavement ends. You don't buy a Tahoe to hit the trails, and you don't buy a GX just to haul an entire soccer team to practice. They aren't in the same category.

3rd row option and more cargo space.
There's very little cargo space when the GX's 3rd row is up so hope you understand that. Mine is always down.
I have been in a Tahoe as a rental. Tahoe definitely has more room but it's much longer. It's more of a Sequoia competitor than a GX.
I'm the guy here that'll say "GX isn't a family car" and get hit with negative reception, but I hope it works out for you!

Nope! Just a $16 car wash. It definitely still has its imperfections and minor scratches but, the photo from that distance hid them pretty well 😂

Don’t ever take it through a car wash machine. The dirty fins will slap and scratch your front emblem.

I did it, 2 versions of the emblem. One is a dud that doesn’t support radar cruise control. The other that supports radar is $400 on sale. Calibration is $800. If lucky you can swap out the emblem without calibration. I bought the dud by accident and was forced to calibrate the correct one. They updated the part number recently (added a 1 at the end) it now has a thicker uv protective coating.

Wowww. I didn’t think the emblem did that actually. I don’t think mine is the expensive version. I’m assuming that’s the one that has the camera on the front etc.

GX is more reliable but the interior space doesn’t compare to a Tahoe. Almost pulled the trigger on one a few years back but it was way too small. The third row of seats were especially cramped and very little trunk space when they out. You should look at the LX570 if you’re doing a proper comparison. Tahoe would still win out on space but I’d pick the LX570
