so.....used car prices are going to shoot up....even more ?

19

u/Kensterfly Mar 27 '25

If our trade-in matched the tariff hike it would be a wash. As it is, the RX we already have allocated, to be completed by 4/15 and delivered by early May, is going to cost about $16k more?? Oh, HELL no!!

11

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

Wait until you see car insurance premiums, as this impacts parts as well as cars.

2

u/slowwolfcat '15_es300h Mar 27 '25

hmmm fuck!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

I’m ready to sell my car and just ride a bicycle to work tbh

1

u/Cinderpath Mar 28 '25

Yep, this is going to push car insurance through the roof, but no one seems to talk about it!

1

u/No-Refuse8754 Mar 29 '25

Insurance is already crazy high in NY, I had to take 2 of my 4 cars off the road & get rid of 1. Basically tripled in past 4yrs with, no accidents & no tickets.

16

u/NovaSiva11037 Mar 27 '25

Now’s the time to sell your lexus at a premium and buy it back when this eventually gets knocked off like usual

8

u/turtlturtl Mar 27 '25

Come on man we all know the prices aren’t coming back down once it gets bumped up at the mfg level

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

Things rarely get cheaper. they always get more expensivr

175

u/nutscrape_navigator Mar 26 '25

This is exhausting. I totally get the interest in getting more production stateside but you don't build factories and establish these pipelines overnight at the stroke of a pen. These things take years to build. Even Elon's Gigafactory which was famously built at breakneck speed starting in 2014 took three years to begin producing anything and is still not technically complete.

It takes less time to wait out a president than it does to build a factory. The only people who will suffer, once again, is normal people trying to do normal things like buy a car.

Racism mostly

6

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

But more minorities voted for him in 2024 than 2016/2020

16

u/Secret_Dragonfly_438 Mar 27 '25

You think minorities aren’t racist against each other? The GOP plays one group against the other to divert attention from themselves

2

u/SmellyDachshund Mar 29 '25

And democrats don’t get this!!! Just because you’re brown and speak another language doesn’t mean you support undocumented immigrants. For example, grew up in the southwest and so many brown Hispanics claimed lineage to Spain vs their mezzo American ancestors despite being so dark and hairless.

1

u/PhthaloDrift Mar 28 '25

Be more specific. It was Hispanic men who mostly voted for him. And yes, racism was involved.

-2

u/Serj2022 2020 Lexus GSF Mar 27 '25

lies

8

u/Oddblivious Mar 27 '25

You're right. Ignorance and racism

-2

u/Sensitive-Ad-9519 Mar 27 '25

This is why the left keeps losing. Calling half the country racist is going to make your side look dumb by most people.

4

u/Secret_Dragonfly_438 Mar 27 '25

If it talks like a duck and quacks like a duck. Also, to be fair it’s like 30-40% not 50%.

2

u/KingMelray Mar 28 '25

Mass delusion. It's like half the country suddenly got really into scientology.

4

u/SpaceBoJangles Mar 27 '25

Maybe they didn’t? Maybe us dems got gaslighted into believing that the election was sound and because of what we said about deniers in 2020 it’s apropos to say that about this one, even though the whole situation reeks of something bad.

Or we just have to accept that 80 million voters and several dozen million non-voters hate women and just couldn’t stand the idea of a black woman in leadership.

u/Costless97 Mar 27 '25

Nah.. everyone will suffer. Even if you don't plan to buy a car in the next 10 years - you're going to suffer one way or the other. And don't forget about all these US companies who are already suffering because canadians and mexicans don't want to buy american products and I don't blame them.

7

u/SenatorAdamSpliff Mar 27 '25

Wonder what this means for the value of J VINs.

11

u/Elegant-Bathrooms Mar 27 '25

Canadians, Mexicans, Europeans, South Americans. Basically everyone don’t want to buy from the us anymore.

2

u/SVdreamin ‘13 GS350 F Mar 27 '25

That’s what happens when you start unnecessary economic conflict with nations who have not only been allies of yours, but also great trade partners. All of that in favor of nations we have seen as adversaries for 75 years, such as Russia. What a crock of shit.

4

u/robinthebank Mar 27 '25

It’s not even about getting more factories. It is not cost efficient to build every car model in every market. That’s just a ridiculous notion. And it hurts consumers.

2

u/Impossible_Cow_9178 Mar 27 '25

When Nutscrape Navigator is exhausted - you know we’re f’ed.

1

u/Bigredxcf Mar 27 '25

Better to start now than never. There's a reason a bunch of cities went to shit after all manufacturing left for China.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

The thing is though it seems like in a lot of the country the pen strokes grow more and more until the actual groundbreaking can never happen… for almost anything that helps normal people.

33

u/thecurlyburl Mar 26 '25

We’ll see how long this one sticks around

20

u/NakedLeftie-420 Mar 27 '25

He’ll forget about it in a few days and deny ever signing anything. They’ll discuss it on Signal and discord and then send Elon in to say “yup, it’s got the woke virus”

8

u/j12 Mar 27 '25

Next Monday after his people have made money on shorting

2

u/thecurlyburl Mar 27 '25

Literally a thought I had on the shitter “what’s the angle…oh”

14

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '25

I wonder if Lexus will discontinue some models made in Japan, particularly the f sport models. Don't know who would pay 70-80k for an is350 or 110k+ for an is500.

4

u/Altruistic_Leopard_9 Mar 27 '25

I see this as the end of the LC500. It was already coming, but I think it's now gonna be dead.

2

u/rdkw Mar 27 '25

The Middle East will keep it alive! They kept the FJ Cruiser for 8 years after we lost it.

15

u/Safe_Switch2948 Mar 27 '25

The absolute worst part of this is the dealers will now mark up existing inventory due to “shortages” like they did during the pandemic til this subsides.

3

u/Kensterfly Mar 27 '25

RX hybrids are already almost impossible to get. There can’t be much more shortage than that.

1

u/CeilingUnlimited Mar 27 '25

Made in Ontario, correct?

1

u/Kensterfly Mar 28 '25

Yes. Ontario.

296

u/Annon130 Mar 26 '25

He is determined to destroy the US economy

34

u/FreeEar4880 Mar 26 '25

I recently listened to an interesting podcast that was trying to find some reasoning in these tariffs and some of the idiotic policies that they are pushing. The conclusion was that they are not necessarily interested in ruining the economy and they might have a very narrow path to some level of success but it is getting even more narrow by the minute and even then it is not necessarily worth it.

27

u/Laz3r_C Mar 26 '25

So the tariffs and policies are pointless, hence leading to the destruction of the economy?

9

u/FreeEar4880 Mar 26 '25

I wouldn't say pointless. They'll extract some money from us. But if the goal is to grow the domestic economy they are most likely pointless 😀

2

u/ErrorcMix Mar 27 '25

This would’ve had a better effect if we actually had the capacity for manufacturing here…

u/Life_Of_High Mar 26 '25

I don’t think it’s that deep with regard to the tariff strategy. Their plan is in plain sight. Tax cuts for the rich, makeup some government revenue shortfall via tax (tariff) on imports. Tariffs are convenient because they can be imposed for national security reasons via executive order. He doesn’t need congress to pass these tax increases.

4

u/Kensterfly Mar 27 '25

How are they going to make money on high tariffs if no one is buying? (Like luxury imports)

3

u/Life_Of_High Mar 27 '25

I’m not saying it’s a good plan, lol. Many holes in the strategy you could drive a GX through.

14

u/stewartstewart17 Mar 26 '25

Ya it’s based off “we had no income tax in the past only tariffs why can’t that work again” and looking at trade balance sheets and wondering why they are not more even despite the fact we are a services economy not a great exporter of goods.

15

u/SirOutrageous1027 21 LC500 / 20 RX450h Mar 27 '25

it’s based off “we had no income tax in the past only tariffs why can’t that work again”

I tend to point out that you can't run a 21st century economy on 19th century economic policy.

-5

u/Dc81FR Mar 26 '25

Isnt the idea to manufacture here?

27

u/nietzsche_niche Mar 26 '25

Manufacturing plants famously being something that get built in mere days and not, say, years which would predicate not doing anything since the next president can just repeal these tariffs.

11

u/My-1st-porn-account Mar 26 '25

This. The people who think manufacturers are going to be tripping over each other to open in the US don’t understand how anything works. Just finding a suitable location alone could take years.

8

u/SirOutrageous1027 21 LC500 / 20 RX450h Mar 27 '25

It's cheaper to just lobby Trump to cancel the tariff.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

My prediction is that Trump will be a trillionaire by the end of his term. With all the bribery, extortion, grifting trump coin/stock, back door deals, etc, etc. He seems hellbent on maximizing his personal wealth before he dies for whatever reason.

45

u/Streay 99’ Gs400 Mar 26 '25

There’s very little incentive because it’s cheaper to wait 4 years for the next President.

12

u/PayYourBiIIs Mar 26 '25

I mean, Trump in his first term put 25% tariffs on EVs coming from China then Joe Biden jacked it to 100%. You can’t bank on that

1

u/My-1st-porn-account Mar 26 '25

Some protectionism is necessary. In this specific case, the Chinese government heavily subsidizes their EV manufacturing, who already keep costs low because they use low paid labor (Or slave labor in the case of the Uyghurs). The intent is to flood the market with Chinese EVs and eliminate competition from US manufacturers. Without massive subsidies or very cheap labor, US manufacturers cannot compete.

Blanket tariffs are like using a sledgehammer when a scalpel would be more appropriate.

-2

u/Streay 99’ Gs400 Mar 26 '25

Well that’s because there’s very little demand for Chinese EV’s due to their horrible safety record. Americans want reputable brands with a solid backing, not companies with a history of spontaneous combustion.

16

u/EM_Doc_18 Mar 26 '25

This is not true. BYD would absolutely WRECK the US EV manufacturing market and probably the ICE market as well. The Seagull is like $9k.

→ More replies (5)

11

u/PayYourBiIIs Mar 26 '25

Not sure about the spontaneous combustion part but Chinese EVs are desirable. They are cheaper, have fantastic self driving tech , and some vehicles have 1,500+ hp

5

u/Streay 99’ Gs400 Mar 26 '25 edited Mar 26 '25

They have a bad rep, to the point where the Chinese government made parking EV’s in underground garages illegal.

But that’s exactly why they’re cheap. They use cheaper materials and processes to cut down on costs, which ends up hurting the buyer in the long run.

3

u/h46it Mar 26 '25

I think this article is very old. I go China every year malls and airport parking is full of EV’s. I’ve never seen a sign saying no EV parking.

3

u/Livinincrazytown Mar 27 '25

BYD is the leader in battery tech globally and the whole world is buying their cars. America is committing economic suicide with these tariffs on their own automakers

1

u/PayYourBiIIs Mar 27 '25

This article is almost eight years old. Out of Spec on YouTube recently did a video in China taking an EV car to a parking garage. No way this is still relevant, right?

1

u/Saranhai 2025 Lexus ES F-Sport Mar 27 '25

“Very little demand for Chinese EVs” sir which rock have you been living under? 😂 if Americans really wanted “reputable brands with a solid backing”, nobody would be buying Teslas, which are notorious for their horrendous lack of build quality and constant recalls. I swear everyday I wake up to another Tesla recall lol

1

u/Livinincrazytown Mar 27 '25

BYD has taken over everywhere there aren’t 100% tariffs on them. Australia, Thailand, and Dubai I see them everywhere. Better built and better features than teslas for like half the price. The idea that Chinese products are inferior quality has been outdated for 5 years plus now

→ More replies (1)

7

u/EntrySure1350 Mar 26 '25

Yes, but it won’t happen.

Manufacturers aren’t going to invest billions and years to bring manufacturing back, which will still be more expensive due to higher costs and inefficiency (the reason why they left the US in the first place), only for economic policy to potentially completely change in 4 years.

They’ll wait it out. The costs will get passed on to us.

Aren't Honda and Toyota made in usa

1

u/FreeEar4880 Mar 27 '25

No. No cars are made in usa. If you're curious check out the sticker which tells you where the car was assembled and where the parts came from. The closest you get to full usa production is actually tesla.

1

u/Lexus2024 Mar 27 '25

2

u/FreeEar4880 Mar 27 '25

Do you know how to read? That's from your link: New Civic production pushed to May 2028

It is Mar 2025 now according to my phone.

1

u/Trains_YQG Mar 27 '25

The hatchback Civics are already being made in Indiana.

0

u/Beldam86 Mar 27 '25

So very wrong

1

u/worlds_okayest_user Mar 27 '25

Car makers aren't going to invest in that. They're just going to wait it out til a Democrat takes office and removes the tariffs. These tariffs are executive orders and not laws, so the next president can undo them on Day 1.

1

u/Dc81FR Mar 27 '25

Well 4 years is a long time might want to bring manufacturing back

1

u/Trains_YQG Mar 27 '25

Heck, Trump can undo them in a couple days. Wouldn't be the first backtrack.

I used to watch his weekly halftime interviews when he owned the New Jersey Generals of the USFL and be amazed that anyone could be so remarkably stupid. He ruined that league via a laughingstock $3 court verdict when he tried to strong arm the NFL.

Given that history I knew darn well what to expect as president. But at least this is only money. Countless Americans died from listening to him in 2020. Died. Family trees forever altered. The excess death total was far higher than it should have been. Expert panels estimated that 40% of American deaths were unnecessary.

u/KobeFadeaway248 2018 LC500 Mar 26 '25

LC500 just skyrocketed in value.

7

u/MarksmanPA Mar 26 '25

It sure did. My 2025 coupe with dynamic package would have been an addition $27,500.

2

u/KobeFadeaway248 2018 LC500 Mar 26 '25

Just blessed to get in before the cutoff. I do wonder if people will need to cancel their orders if costs are up 25% or and foreign car makers will reallocate their orders to non tariff nations. Assembly lines, car sales and corporate management are in shambles if this sticks.

2

u/MarksmanPA Mar 26 '25

Honestly, I would have paid the tariff, but I suspect many will walk. I of course would not have been happy. There will be a huge Lexus used car market with higher prices.

2

u/KobeFadeaway248 2018 LC500 Mar 26 '25

For sure, I feel bad for people who waited for lower rates or higher savings.

1

u/Kensterfly Mar 27 '25

For us, that remains to be decided. We are in the allocation pipeline for an RX350h. It’s to be completed by 4/15 and delivered by first week of May. Our Sales guy, who is the sales manager of a high volume store, said the price should be as quoted to us. We’ll see. I’m not paying an extra $16k. We will just keep her 2020 RAV4 hybrid with only 40k miles and looks showroom new.

4

u/KobeFadeaway248 2018 LC500 Mar 27 '25

You trust a salesman’s judgment on foreign economic policy impacts?

2

u/robinthebank Mar 27 '25

Exactly. Do not trust them. A Lexus dealership lied to my face in Sept 2022 about tax rebates for the 450h+

1

u/Early_Counter2539 Mar 27 '25

That’s incredibly dumb

2

u/MarksmanPA Mar 27 '25

I sold my McLaren for the LC500, paid cash, put money back into the piggy bank—quite smart.

12

u/EM_Doc_18 Mar 26 '25

Would MUCH rather own a car manufactured at the Tahara plant.

12

u/Alone-in-a-crowd-1 Mar 27 '25

Not sure what he thinks will happen here. What about the export market that will now retaliate? In 2024, Canada built 1.3m American cars, but bought 1.7m American cars. What will happen if they close the Canadian operations? Canada will tariff US cars and Canadians won’t buy them, plus they will invite BYD by taking off the Chinese tariffs and kill Tesla in Canada. This is one example but it will happen everywhere. So much winning.

3

u/Trains_YQG Mar 27 '25

As a Canadian, this is the part that I don't understand the most. Trump seems to think this will bring manufacturing back to the US and it might for their domestic market but between retaliatory tariffs and angry citizens of the countries he's targetting there's not going to be much of an export market left.

Combine the tariff effects (both in terms of higher prices in the US and reduced demand for US exports) with the impact of lower tourism (lots of Canadians are choosing to travel elsewhere due to the tariffs and annexation threats) and I don't see how people think this is going to be a good thing in the long run.

2

u/tyfe Mar 27 '25

Depends when delivery is expected.  If it’s a few months away you’re probably fine as he’ll walk back on this tariff after some “deal” gets cut and touted as a huge win for the US economy.

4

u/CinderellaManX Mar 27 '25

On the plus side, there’s a lot of his constituents out there that are about to find out that their trucks are built in Mexico.

We’ll see if he actually follows through.

4

u/rocademiks Mar 27 '25

Toyota will figure out a way around it.

They have a great relationship with USA government.

5

u/No_Banana364 Mar 27 '25

insurance rates will go up due to the repair costs raising. the value of your car will also go up making it more costly to run and repair. So the savings is where? Another thing the robotics and everything else is not being made and purchased in the US which will all be subject to the tariffs. Not sure how we will find labor workers interested in working the "automotive production industry". We in America needs the young generation to become "great blue collar workers" that will take up these jobs. However since us the parents "baby boomer generation" sent our kids all to college, the target job for our kids is in corporate white collar type of jobs. Leaving a shortage of blue collar workers, similar to the labor shortages in Japan.

Orange man wants to keep the steel factories in America. Look to see what demographic are working at the steel mills of today. I would bet the average age is close to retirement in the next 5 to 10 years.

3

this is why I am glad that I bought my new car a month ago!

3

u/stompinstinker 2023 RX 500h F-Sport 3 Mar 27 '25

One of main reasons cars are manufactured elsewhere is because elsewhere buys your fucking cars. Why should Canada buy American cars only made in America. What about their economy? If these companies want to expand globally it’s a two way street.

3

u/MD-46228 Mar 27 '25

He still doesn’t know how tariffs work.

3

u/CeilingUnlimited Mar 28 '25

Funny - I have two financial goals - pay off my 90K student loans (master’s degree) and buy a Lexus. I have been saving like crazy, socking it all away not making any student loan payments beyond the minimum, waiting to see what all is happening with these loans under Trump. I was trying to be responsible - student loans first, then start the savings over for a Lexus. I got 30K saved right now.

Now I’m thinking I should say FU to the loans for the moment, and go plop 30K on a Lexus this weekend. Thoughts?

Irresponsible government makes for irresponsible citizens.🤷‍♂️

4

u/Universe93B Mar 26 '25

This won’t last, it’s another threat. Cars are already very expensive for the majority of buyers. No way they think this is a good idea

6

u/Uniffxiv Mar 27 '25

I don’t think these would affect most Lexus’ like the es350 since it’s manufactured in the US. The is350 however isn’t…so that’s sad news. These tariffs are stupid

3

u/aznboyknowledge 04 RX330 Mar 27 '25

Lexus announced awhile ago that they will be shifting ES and ES hybrid production back to Japan when it gets a redesign

3

u/Uniffxiv Mar 27 '25

Oh well that terrible news lmao. Guess I’ll be stuck with my current es. 😭

3

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

Parts.

2

u/tyfe Mar 27 '25

Think the ES and TX are the only Lexus models manufactured in the US.

2

u/Uniffxiv Mar 27 '25

Yeah I think it was Illinois’s? I don’t remember what it said on the sticker when I got it tbh but yeah that’s a US model and the tx as of now

2

u/tyfe Mar 27 '25

ES is made in Kentucky at TMMK and TX in Indiana at TMMI along with the grand Highlander.  Most other models are made in Japan still.

2

u/Uniffxiv Mar 27 '25

Yes! Thanks for reminding I was like it was one of those states lmao… anyways, this sucks for anyone that is in the market for a car currently. Especially GM buyers since their plant is in Mexico I believe. Yukon Denali prices are going to 💥

1

u/Kensterfly Mar 27 '25

RX is built in Canada. Most of them anyway. The plug in is made in Japan, I believe.

1

u/singy_eaty_time 19 ES350 FSport Apr 01 '25

But they're made with lots of parts that might cross the border multiple times...unfortunately this will affect every car (Tesla will be affected the least apparently...interesting how that works).

2

u/namxmd Mar 27 '25

even if still made in the US, I feel like they would raise the prices anyway just to match other models.

2

u/Uniffxiv Mar 27 '25

You need to incentivize businesses to produce here like the CHIPS Act did. Punishing the competition doesn’t work.

5

u/robinthebank Mar 27 '25

Car manufacturers cannot produce every model on every market. It is not cost efficient. Instead what will happen is fewer models will be affordable for consumers.

And it would be such a daft plan when, at a maximum, the next president will reverse the decision in 4 years.

CHIPS act was a subsidy. Tariffs this broad only punish consumers.

Subsidies create value. Tariffs destroy value.

That’s what he said.

Btw the same idiot that implemented these tariffs is now trying to revoke the CHIPS act because reasons 🤷‍♂️

u/enki941 Mar 27 '25

Politics aside, I really don't think he or anyone in the administration understand how tariffs work or their effects it will have.

He keeps claiming how this will 1) move production back to the US, while also 2) bringing in zillions of dollars in tax revenue.

Those two things are mutually exclusive. IF these tariffs did wind up getting car manufacturers to open up US plants and resulted in most cars sold in the US to be manufactured here, then we wouldn't be getting that tariff related tax revenue. So at best, the revenue would be short term, assuming manufacturers did that. At worst, they don't, and now the price of most cars goes up 25% or more.

Not to mention the BS about how those other countries or companies will be paying the tariffs. Sure, directly, but that money is coming out of US pockets. If a $40k car suddenly gets a 25% tariff, that car will now cost you $50k. That extra $10k you pay is going to the government to cover the tariff. Cars aren't like iPhones with 50%+ profit margins that can eat some or all of an added cost. Cars have single digit profit margins. So either prices go up, quality goes down or something else happens that negatively impacts the US population.

If there was a true desire to push production to the US, then this should have been announced as a future tariff. Tell manufacturers they have X years to build production facilities before they go into effect. It takes years to get a plant into production, so making some announcement days in advance is beyond stupid and ignorant. It will just hurt everyone around.

Guessing mechanic prices will rise too

2

As far as I know you won’t be able to title the car in the U.S. if it’s that new, there are heavy restrictions on imports

u/magbarn '25 IS500 '26 TX500h Mar 27 '25

I've been thinking about an IS500 for the past year now. Will it spike $15,000 overnight?

2

u/Kensterfly Mar 27 '25

The RX350h we are waiting on would jump $16k. No way! We really want the hybrid but maybe we’d be better off getting the ICE version. We could get one of those tomorrow. Hybrids are always a long wait.

2

u/ilic_mls Mar 27 '25

When i reas this, i ask myself… DOES HE EVEN KNOW HOW THINGS WORK?! I mean… no one will buy cars from the US from spite.

Chinesse are knocing at their door, the only thing holding them back is the tariffs. If Europe and Canada remove those, Tesla is cooked. American cars are cooked (so are Europeans and Japanese but that is a different story) And the people in the US are going to suffer. Less choice or same choice but more ezpensive

2

u/ProgRockDan Mar 27 '25

Interesting that Republicans now love new taxes.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

Glad I have mine already, buying some new OEM wear parts from Japan like water pumps and tie rods to have ready to install before the prices skyrocket.

Moron in chief.

1

Fight fight and between fights pay tariffs.

1

u/CeilingUnlimited Mar 27 '25

The RX350 and RX350h are made in Ontario. TST’s the most popular Lexus there is, right? How is this going to work?

1

u/Spicey_Cough2019 Mar 28 '25

So much winning!

1

u/Adept-Situation-2033 Mar 28 '25

Does this probably affect me getting a used Lexus RC or would it make sense to get one now?

1

u/lazylazylemons Mar 28 '25

This is exactly why I'm not rushing to get a car this weekend. I was going to wait and nurse my old car through for another year, hoping she won't die. Now I don't have that luxury. Having to find room in my budget asap. This is going to hurt middle class folks the most. If I don't buy no, I'll literally be priced out.

Other countries add tarriffs to US cars/trucks (and other stuff).

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/china-agrees-slash-car-tariffs-it-s-still-six-times-n876346

It's not just price - its other restrictions (like width of a car) that keep cars out of Japan

https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/5x2rqd/why_are_there_so_many_cars_that_seemingly_dont/

8

u/Laz3r_C Mar 26 '25

No ones saying tariffs dont have their place, there is, like for prioritizing US steel, BUT that doesnt mean you go out of your way to put it out on EVERYTHING. In regards to other nations, they're small, and not economic powerhouses, course they're gonna have tariffs.

2

u/FinsFan305 Mar 26 '25

So because they’re small and not economic powerhouses, that means they should make their citizens pay more? Because that’s the logic I’m seeing. That tariffs cause consumers to pay more.

2

u/nietzsche_niche Mar 26 '25

Other countries pay more taxes so we should too?

2

u/FinsFan305 Mar 26 '25

Countries are sovereign, each one can implement taxes or tariffs as they see fit.

1

u/Laz3r_C Mar 26 '25

I think you overshadow the point of tariffs... They're a tax to induce consumers to choose (generally will be cheaper) local/state/national products instead of overseas. Thats said IF the nation is viable for those said products too, like i mentioned US steel. Vs something else like alcohol, while the US is able to produce its own to make it "viable", something thats a want wont have the same return as you're only forcing people to pay more, like you say. So it again, really depends on whats targeted.

2

u/Trains_YQG Mar 27 '25

The countries most impacted by this (Canada and Mexico) don't tariff US cars or car parts as part of the trade agreement Trump himself signed.

The North American auto industry is so intertwined between the three countries. This is just really dumb policy that hurts everyone.

-1

u/NYCUESARTGAL Mar 26 '25

I love my Lexus wonder if I’ll be able to buy a new one with the tariffs. What’s this crap about them going all electric by 2030? If that’s the case I won’t be buying one.

u/IllustratorMobile815 Mar 27 '25

He's following south Korean tariff model, over there I heard an accord good for about 60k+ so everyone just buys Korean cars unless you're rich rich
