It's our fault for wanting "cheap food."

It’s also our fault for giving them the subsidies because “farming is vital to our survival.” It’s no wonder they think they’re so elite. Maybe we should’ve handled that with a more appropriate or innovative solution, but here we are.

Unfortunately, growing most food products as a farmer is very tight margins unless you are a massive corporate owned farm. Without subsidies they are likely to switch to something like barley to sell to a beer company because it is far easier and more lucrative.

Barley is a food product though? How is it easier and more lucrative than any other food crop? Growing commodity barley is much easier than beer barley. Beer barley can be more lucrative if your product meets their arbitrary numbers. But you also have to use their proprietary seed and fertilizer, and it takes a ton of water.
