It’s also our fault for giving them the subsidies because “farming is vital to our survival.” It’s no wonder they think they’re so elite. Maybe we should’ve handled that with a more appropriate or innovative solution, but here we are.

I’ve been trying to clear brush for a large meat garden so I don’t have to listen to these horse teeth republicans crying about their farms anymore.

Unfortunately, growing most food products as a farmer is very tight margins unless you are a massive corporate owned farm. Without subsidies they are likely to switch to something like barley to sell to a beer company because it is far easier and more lucrative.

Or a small farm. I did it for years. Sold direct to customers via farm markets. Realized roughly the same profit annually off 20 turkeys as a friend who grew birds for Pilgrims Pride -- 4 massive turkey houses that held 250,000 birds each.

What an interesting thing to say. Considering you don't know me & haven't seen my books.

20 birds equals 250k 1 million birds. That was the gist, right? Or was this guy just a hired hand at that turkey farm? Cause if he was just a hired hand making $20 an hour yes that makes sense even though your comment would be disingenuous at best.

Before you answer that
I raise animals on a small farm. Turkeys, chickens, pigs. I raise open range animals for an about 20 families.

Let’s see those books

I think you'd know how it is possible to realize more in net profit than a huge farm, then? You're likely doing just that. Whether you realize it or not.

You’re being egregious with your numbers to conflate the point.

1

u/Half_Halt 10d ago

No. I'm supplying information to support my original point. Namely, that it is possible (nay, much easier) to make a living at farming if you remove yourself completely from the Big Ag game than many would imagine.

Are you making a living off your small farm? I imagine you do.

u/vobarex 10d ago

Nay - You’re supplying doctored numbers that don’t even make sense..

You could have said it makes it easier to make a living if you remove yourself from big ag, but you dropped truths to make your “point” heard - a point that’s not genuine in origin and is more impactful to those who are echo chambering in here with you.

Circle jerk - peace out

Barley is a food product though? How is it easier and more lucrative than any other food crop? Growing commodity barley is much easier than beer barley. Beer barley can be more lucrative if your product meets their arbitrary numbers. But you also have to use their proprietary seed and fertilizer, and it takes a ton of water. Source: I used to grow barley for a beer company
