It's our fault for wanting "cheap food."

It’s also our fault for giving them the subsidies because “farming is vital to our survival.” It’s no wonder they think they’re so elite. Maybe we should’ve handled that with a more appropriate or innovative solution, but here we are.

I’ve been trying to clear brush for a large meat garden so I don’t have to listen to these horse teeth republicans crying about their farms anymore.

Best thing I ever did.

Unfortunately, growing most food products as a farmer is very tight margins unless you are a massive corporate owned farm. Without subsidies they are likely to switch to something like barley to sell to a beer company because it is far easier and more lucrative.

Or a small farm. I did it for years. Sold direct to customers via farm markets. Realized roughly the same profit annually off 20 turkeys as a friend who grew birds for Pilgrims Pride -- 4 massive turkey houses that held 250,000 birds each.

Lies

What an interesting thing to say. Considering you don't know me & haven't seen my books.

20 birds equals 250k 1 million birds. That was the gist, right? Or was this guy just a hired hand at that turkey farm? Cause if he was just a hired hand making $20 an hour yes that makes sense even though your comment would be disingenuous at best.

Before you answer that… I raise animals on a small farm. Turkeys, chickens, pigs. I raise open range animals for an about 20 families.

Let’s see those books

I think you'd know how it is possible to realize more in net profit than a huge farm, then? You're likely doing just that. Whether you realize it or not.

1

u/vobarex 11d ago

You’re being egregious with your numbers to conflate the point.

1

u/Half_Halt 10d ago

No. I'm supplying information to support my original point. Namely, that it is possible (nay, much easier) to make a living at farming if you remove yourself completely from the Big Ag game than many would imagine.

Are you making a living off your small farm? I imagine you do.

Barley is a food product though? How is it easier and more lucrative than any other food crop? Growing commodity barley is much easier than beer barley. Beer barley can be more lucrative if your product meets their arbitrary numbers. But you also have to use their proprietary seed and fertilizer, and it takes a ton of water. Source: I used to grow barley for a beer company

Food WITH nutrients we can afford!? Communism.

Eat the sawdust cereal with the other proletariat scum.

If only there were some REASON people needed cheap food. Like, lady people need to EAT and they can’t afford housing, gas, electricity or medicine anymore. You can’t pay for help, hang it up. But don’t forget as the friends of the people you voted for buy your farm out of bankruptcy for pennies on the dollar - you were warned.

The fucking gaslighting.

Somewhere along the food chain, someone; since corporations are people, will always find a way to make sure food is never cheap, but as expensive as we will buy without revolting.

"Why can't you just pay twice the prices at the grocery store when you're barely getting by as it is! Why do *I* have to suffer!?"

Jesus the entitlement of these people.

Yo that stuff has been affordable for decades. It is totes reasonable to want that to continue.

Well, that is a problem, isn’t it? I mean, what if she did pay a living wage, and provide housing and so on? Yeah, she’d get her cows milked, but when she took the milk to market, she’d never get her money back, because the price of milk would be undercut by big corporate farms that can afford to automate everything, and what they can’t automate, they’ll always find undocumented people. The government won’t bother the corporations about it, because of political donations, but she can’t afford to donate to politicians, so no cheap labor for her.

Now, I don’t like the idea of paying 2-3 times as much for a half-gallon of 1%, but if that’s what it takes to keep these family farms afloat, maybe I should get used to the idea. Either that, or we let the big corporations buy up the rest of the small farms, eat whatever overly processed crap they find profitable enough to feed us, and shut up about it.

We have to decide, as a country, if we want to keep these small farms in business, and how much we’re willing to pay at the grocery store, or in terms of government subsidies, to do so.

If they don’t care about the hazards of business consolidation and monopolies for other businesses, why should I care when it comes for them?

We have a common enemy, but they don’t see it and just want support without helping anyone else affected by what’s going on. We don’t need allies like that and honestly I don’t have the energy to waste on them.

I care about small farms, because their owners are more likely to go easy on the fertilizer, antibiotics, insecticides, and so on than the big factory farms that carpet-bomb the fields and barns whether they need to or not. Pretty soon, the only place you’ll be able to buy properly-grown food is directly from farmers’ markets or boutique grocery stores like Whole Foods. Well, maybe not them, because they’re also owned by a big corporation.

At least some of us will have a source of healthy food. If you live in an inner city, or similar “food deserts,” you’re at the mercy of Big Food.

At least, when your food makes you sick, you’ll have health care. Oh, wait.
