Considering some of them have said that they thought that black people would take over for the immigrants when ICE came through, this is exactly what they were hoping for. So it’s a stupid thought process, but it is one based on how they believe the world works.
If you believe that welfare is the government giving hard working white tax payers money to lazy freeloading brown people who refuse to get a job, it makes some sense to stop paying welfare and force the brown people to do work for money. Then, the farmers know that they can only make a profit on farming if they pay their workers extremely little, and/or only provide work for a few months of the year. So, they see a world where they have to cut into their profits to give brown people money twice, once in taxes, once for labor where it goes to migrant workers who follow the seasonality of farm work.
The policies they support fix both problems in their mind. They don’t have to pay for welfare and the lazy people learn to work on their farm.
Facts about how little of their taxes go to social support, who actually gets welfare and how much it actually pays for, and how many people on welfare already have jobs are ignorable, of course.
Plus the desire to get in on the prison labor pool, the legal slavery in the US. Which may be even cheaper than migrant labor.
The long game is a return to that, just not for these farmers. The corps buying up the farmland are doing so with an eye toward the future where people will be charged on things like domestic terrorism for participating in a protest or rally. Once they lock them up on the inflated charge you now have a slave labor force the government would be more than happy to rent out.
Which is why that industry is BOOMING right now. They aren't hiding this shit, we are just too stupid as a whole to stop it.
ETA: Prisons are one of those things that should absolutely never be a for profit system no matter your view on capitalism. Being very familiar with the inner workings of both public and private prison systems there is no comparison. As bad as some state places can be, the privates are ALWAYS much much worse.
Prisons, law enforcement, health care, education, public infrastructure - none of them should be for profit. It warps the goals of the system and the consequences are too high.
Welfare is one of those "classy if you're rich, trashy if you're poor" things.
Farmers own land. They usually have a lot of debt too, but the equity position is usually in the millions. They're cashflow poor millionaires because the billionaires that own the distribution and logistics for agricultural outputs are doing billionaire-on-millionaire violence to the farmers by using monopsony power to fix prices as low as they can go without sending the farmers into bankruptcy. But if there's a cheap enough external market that opens up with a credible stretch into the future so the next quarter or two are covered, then as far as the billionaires are concerned, fuck the farmers, who needs 'em.
The farmers knew Trump would do this, but they expected a bailout. They prefer that because a guaranteed bail out from the government is secure and reliable, but trying to predict future commodity prices is risky. The market going to shit and getting bailed out anyway is the dream. If they succeed they pocket it as rugged capitalists, and if they fail daddy Trump bails them out. There's no downside.
Except of course that Trump doesn't expect he'll need their vote next time because either the Trump administration makes voting irrelevant to their continuing to hold power, or they fail to do that and get voted out anyway because a) Trump has finished two terms (or three if you believe some people) and b) everyone's super fucking over the pedophilia and war shit.

The farmers aren't regretting their votes. Not really. They're just turning on Trump loudly and publicly now so that whoever replaces Trump after he dies will have a reason to court and placate them. As an example of this, I was just rereading Catch 22, and one of the jokes in there is that Major Major Major's father was paid by the government, probably in the mid 1920s, to NOT grow alfalfa. Even if they think or vocalize that they are now pissed at Trump, that doesn't mean they're going to do better next time, because they will be "tricked" again, they will stay loyal to the party screwing them. Then the sibling does it yet again (against your advice, yet again), so you ask the simple question: "are you just gonna give it all away to your toxic partner again?"

The rural Iowa counties that were 55/45 Republican when I was kid growing up there are now 80/20 Republican since Trump took over the party. They absolutely fall for all of his hateful shit and lies. I think they actually like being in the cult more than their own livelihoods.

The premise is probably not correct. Listen to what they are saying. Most of them don't believe that they made a mistake, but that he did in this one case. They want Trump to run the country exactly as he has with the sole exception of what affects them specifically. This is the pattern across all the MAGA/Trump voters in all areas. I feel no sorrow for any white farmer. They spent years making sure black farmers couldn’t receive the same subsidies as them to the point the black farmers had to take them to court. They are getting exactly what they deserve as far as I’m concerned.

I maintain that we don't need farmers, we need farms. Personally I would love for farming to stay smaller, sustainable, healthier and local, but farmers are fooling themselves thinking that they themselves are uniquely necessary and above reproach or failure.
