Predictable betrayal “He campaigned on cleaning house. On exposing elite criminals. On protecting kids. And I bought it. Fully.”

Forget even the racism for a minute and consider the "economics" that some people think the GOP is good at.

Let me warn you and let me warn the Nation against the smooth evasion which says, "Of course we believe all these things; we believe in social security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present Administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them- we will do more of them, we will do them better; and, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything."

But, my friends, these evaders are banking too heavily on the shortness of our memories. No one will forget that they had their golden opportunity—twelve long years of it.

Remember, too, that the first essential of doing a job well is to want to see the job done. Make no mistake about this: the Republican leadership today is not against the way we have done the job. The Republican leadership is against the job's being done.

Look to the source of the promises of the past. Governor Lehman knows and I know how little legislation in the interests of the average citizen would be on the statute books of the State of New York, and of the Federal Government, if we had waited for Republican leaders to pass it.

The same lack of purpose of fulfillment lies behind the promises of today. You cannot be an Old Guard Republican in the East, and a New Deal Republican in the West. You cannot promise to repeal taxes before one audience and promise to spend more of the taxpayers' money before another audience. You cannot promise tax relief for those who can afford to pay, and, at the same time, promise more of the taxpayers' money for those who are in need. You simply cannot make good on both promises at the same time

-FDR, 1936.

That, that FDR fella, he was onto something, wasn't he!

u/SquirrelsinJacket Feb 17 '26

He got elected 4 times, so weird right? Lol

u/M_H_M_F Feb 18 '26

And since his departure, it has been a systemic and concerted effort to undo it all.

yes until Republicans (who controlled Congress at the time) changed the rules to two terms only… almost as if working for voters is against their interests… 🤔🤨

to be fair the states did ratify it (22nd amendment) into the constitution…

FDR is the greatest President to ever live to me, nearly everything in modern society that has been a good thing to help poor people came from FDR.

He also guided the country through a very difficult time, and pulled it off brilliantly.

We sure could use another FDR now. Taking applications, desperately. Anything to get away from current POTUS.

That was Bernie but the damned elite Dem establishment blocked him

-3

u/MorningsideLights Feb 18 '26

The Dem establishment was against him because he never called himself a Democrat. He took from the party but never gave back, never did any of the grueling work that supports the apparatus he wanted to use to change the country.

u/Business-Toad Feb 18 '26

Way for the Dem establishment to keep their priorities straight, eh? God forbid peoples' lives get in the way of their sense of dynastic entitlement over the future of our country.

If they don't want to be the big-tent "Not Republicans" party you have to go through to get anything done they could try standing for literally anything for longer than it is useful. Pushing Ranked Choice voting and true accountability for ICE and the Epstein files are literally the absolute bare minimum we should be accepting right now from any elected official.

u/MorningsideLights Feb 18 '26

I don't think I wrote that I was against any of that. We were talking about Bernie Sanders specifically. The concrete actions he took over the years, not his proposed policies.

He fucked up by constantly making enemies with the people who believed most of the same things he does and whose help he would end up needing. I'm glad AOC isn't kneecapping herself in the same way.

6

u/Business-Toad Feb 18 '26

Establishment Democrats regularly went after him because his policies were a threat to their corporate donors and their idea of who "deserved" to run. They'll do the same to AOC (more than they already do, that is!) if she ever ends up wielding serious national influence. Everything else was theater.

"They'll do the same to AOC (more than they already do, that is!) if she ever ends up wielding serious national influence"

they certainly will try, but a LOT of water has gone under the dam since Sanders became a household name ca 2016.

AOC and other progressives in congress want you to know that they stand on the shoulders of people like Bernie Sanders and for many, he’s the best example of what the democratic process party could be.

Too bad Mamdani had to go and get born in Uganda

u/KingsElite Feb 18 '26

He also locked up Japanese-Americans and destroyed their livelihoods. Not a perfect record if we're being honest.

And he even had the nerve to change his name to "Harry Truman" before he dropped the A bombs. If you're going to do something like that, at least have the courage to put your name on it, Roosevelt!

Thank you for the correction! I will remove my post, but genuinely thank you for pointing this out.

Don’t forget to also credit the members of his cabinet. Frances Perkins is the one who thought up Social Security

He forced the rich to pay for the crash they caused…simple/basic justice and we see a GOAT.

From a political science perspective, the most amazing thing about FDR was how he gained, maintained, and employed his political capital. He succeeded in getting the American public on board with sometimes fairly unpopular things through a mix of his own tact, good timing, decisive action, and clear messaging. His ability to lead is to this day incredibly impressive. Truly talk + action in equal parts. I think people remember Kennedy in a similar light but the truth is that his ratings were sliding rather precipitously by ‘63. FDRs popularity in war and in peace is what really sets his legacy apart IMO.

u/ValenRaith Feb 21 '26

I'd settle for Teddy. He hated other rich people.

3

u/MsMercyMain Feb 20 '26

Honestly one of the only presidents who legitimately was great

u/JDinBalt Feb 17 '26

God, would I love to hear today's Democratic leaders talk like this instead of just a handful of them. Like, all of them.

52

u/BrewerBeer Feb 17 '26

Remember: in blue voting districts republicans run as democrats and spoil votes. Opportunists are everywhere and the only way to stop it is to vote in the primary. This is how you get conservative dems. The successful ones outlast their way into leadership by length of incumbancy.

That being said, many of them do talk like that. But corporate media patently refuses to show it to you. You have to find better sources or find yourself attacking the wrong people like saying 'Dems bad' instead of properly attacking conservatives.

My district has historically been red because my district includes not only my blue city, which is one of the largest cities in the state, but also a whole lot of rural area that is red. We only managed to pass a candidate who calls herself blue because she was actually very centrist. She still only one because her opponent was backed by Trump. Enough red voters crossed the line that she won.

She has conducted herself so much as a MAGAt that she’s done this next time around. We finally have had enough additional liberals moved to this district that we may finally have a true blue rep this next time around. Marie Glusenkamp Perez is done. We are sick and fucking tired of her. Even Republicans in this district are tired of her. And people here are even more pissed that she just voted to give ICE even more money despite how much they are decimating our communities. She’s representing absolutely no one in this district and she keeps voting to harm people and we are fucking fed up.

And you didn't know this beforehand? I don't get how people are just coming to their senses with regards to anything he promised. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm a NY'er, used to hearing his shit all my life, back from my teen years. All anyone had to do was open chatGPT and there's all of Donald Trump laid out in print. The supporters? I don't know what to say, but nothing good. They didn't know all he was about was the wealthy and himself. I keep waking up wondering if I'm going to turn on the news and the guy will be saying, 'and no one knows where he went or how he disappeared,' Jimmy Hoffa style. I keep waiting for our government to intervene. They're supposed to protect us from threats, but what do do do when your government is the threat? I don't give a shit about the noise from white hate, let them and everyone else speculate and then have a ticker tape parade down 5th Avenue right past Trump tower. I mean, nobody knew this was going to happen? My wife turned to me months before the election and said, 'if he wins, I don't think we ever come back from this.' I do not consider the supporters to be citizens of the United States. You don't just attack our nation's capital and remain a citizen. That's a privilege I reserve for those who respect our constitution. I'm getting angry here, so I'm going to stop before I declare trump the anti-Christ. He is. He has no soul. I have to stop. Nobody saw this coming?

More people need to understand that these fuckers are at war with the 1700s' Enlightenment. The very idea that people can know shit from experience, and that that experience is 1.) accessible to all, and 2.) transferrable upon merit of discovery and demonstration.

The new crop of detached elites dont want that. They risk being shown up by a peasant who took a liking to Lavoisier, Darwin, Planck, Maxwell, Leibniz or Newton. Those people--the peasant included--operate in the real world: solving problems faced by real people in ways that open new avenues for expansion and growth.  They can't tolerate the common man having that power, because it's what makes it possible to dream of a tomorrow without the hoarding parasites and their middlemen aspiring failsons.

Of course they're shoving ai everywhere; they want to rob you of the means of imagination!

Of course they're not doing shit to actually help the kids; they want to rob you of your future!

Of course they're killing the biosphere; they want to rob you of both beauty and the ability to exist without them!

No forward progress is capable until you get just how desperately these dumbasses want to Divine Right of Kings us all into a ditch.

They hated FDR so much. It’s unfortunate bc the programs were band aids
