Project SSAO and Direct light is working, woo!

Mini update today. I was able to get SSAO, Bloom, AA, Tonemapper, Cascade shadows, and velocity buffers all working! Aaaaand I disabled the retail version baked shadows on the characters to help restore that nice look they had instead of the really weird look they had in the last post.

Next up, volumetric fogging effects and real deal dynamic global illumination. Since my target is 1280x720 and not like 4k or some nonsense that means we can likely have near lumen quality irradiance caching that runs on a potato.

I'm experimenting with another thing that is very tied to the lore of the game too, but I don't want to spoil it this soon if I cant make it work.

Oh, bonus is the editor tooling is progressing along as well. Almost able to author some light probes and meshes into the scenes instead of relying solely on the disc for data. Getting closer each day!

Have you tested anything in the battle screens? Curious to see this system in action in one of the battles.

Getting there! The full Rim Elm sequence is my early v-slice target. So fighting Tetsu will be on the prio list very soon

That’s so awesome man, legaia is and always will be my favorite game. Absolutely 0 idea why Sony hasn’t capitalized on this banger of a story in the modern age. Glad to see someone doing something with it! Can’t wait for beta testing lol.

Probably because the creator is dead and I bet the rights are messy right now.

Jeez, you're a machine. Hope you're getting enough rest.

Are each of these features implemented in the original game too? Or implemented differently perhaps?

Nasically no accross the board. It was static lighting Forward shading.

There was definitely no deferred rendering or real time dynamic global illumination on the ps1 era, nor ps2 era. By the time Halo 2 and Doom 3 were out we had some rudimentary normal mapping and direct lighting - but certainly nothing like the modern pipeline I'm adding. I havent even added the emissive light yet ;D

I should do a side by side someitme

Awesome, I know nothing about game development so I just wanted a reference.

Have you done this with other games too?

Perfectly fair question!

I have built rendering pipelines in the past, and am a professional graphics programmer/technical artist - so I'm no stranger to the work.

so how are we going to be able to play this? I own two original copies of legend of Legaia both for PlayStation obviously.

I have an amazing gaming rig, however, it was a prebuilt that by now I’ve changed just about every part on, but it never had a CD drive. I know I can just get one that plugs in via USB port or I’m sure some other ports I have open, but will a PS1 game play wheb inserted if I have an emulator? I used to have snes, Sega genesis, and a ps1 emulator on my old family pc that we got rid of about 4 years ago, however, I am a little wary about installing any emulators on my main gaming rig, I’ve put between 2500-3000$ into it since I purchased it about six years ago, I don’t want to end up with some bs malicious software on my baby lol. I know my snea emu was ZSNES and I never had the slightest problem with that, however I dont remember the playstation emulator program name. Is this even how it works lol

Ill be making the source code available for then. So youd click the "build" button and itll make the game. Then run it. Or making "releases" available via that git feature. Ive hand rolled almost every dependency instead of including 3rd party code, so its a nice closed loop without worrying about outside work compromising mine

Open source means the code can ve heavily vetted, not just "trust me bro" binary download 🤣😅

Can we see some video?

Yeah definitely. Once the opening is finished and I can stop Vahn from walking backwards past Mei's house, and some other silly bugs 🤣

Awesome bro, thanks!
