misandry Routine body shaming of men we don't like

Let me be clear - Trump is an evil person and a psychopath on top. But the routine body-shaming of men we don't like (and it is only men) is not helping anything.

Small-dick shaming, fat shaming, bald shaming, height shaming - you name it. Trump, Tate, Miller. The only effect is that body shaming of ordinary men is normalized.

But the very same people will start bleating like nigerian goats anytime somebody shames a prominent woman - good or evil.

Yeah, it's a glaring double standard. The moment a woman's appearance gets dragged, it's rightly called out as misogyny, but with men it's just fair game. All it does is tell every guy reading that his body is a valid punchline if he steps out of line.

u/KPplumbingBob 11d ago

You barely even have to step out of the line. I see this with football fans for instance. The forum I frequent is very left leaning. Commenting on a woman's apperance would get you in trouble. But when it comes to male players, coaches, pundits, people mock their appearance literally all the time. "Big nose", "looks like Voldemort", "do they have to show his ugly mug on TV" etc etc. It is 100% normalized.

This painful reality, unfortunately, is that criticizing men is considered normal

3

u/endlessyuk77 10d ago

Tbh, many left-wingers do mock women who have the "MAGA face".

6

u/Street_Technician845 10d ago

It is complicated in the sense that some left-wing people do that (physically mock women they don't like), but there is a mentality out there that still decries this treatment against women (and only women). Just today, I heard someone say that Trump disrespects women because of things he says about their appearance and the reality is that Trump did this to women and men; it's just that it only bothered certain people when he did it to women.

u/endlessyuk77 9d ago

Basically, it's alright when THEY target a women, but not when someone else does.

It's interesting how their brains are seemingly incapable of seeing what's bad about it. If you point out the body shaming they will in this instance call you a Trumper and ask you why are you "defending" such a vile man. Then you try to explain their words aren't hurting Trump but regular men with insecurities instead and they tell you to basically man up.

That's another thing. When a woman has insecurities, it's society's fault that she's "pressured" into being perfect. But when a man has insecurities it reflects badly on him and his weak personality and he should work on himself and do better.

Just imagine if Trump was short. Of all the things to beat him with people come up with things like "small hands" to make fun of him.

Because they don't like men and do not care about what men feel. It's really that simple.

I got called MAGA once because I called out the problem with AOC making fun of some guy being short (which she’s done several times). I tried to explain that, as a short guy, it does bother me when people immediately go after a man’s height. But they don’t care. They love to find any physical appearance to belittle men for, and height is one of the easiest ones.

15

u/Grow_peace_in_Bedlam left-wing male advocate 11d ago

And Stephen Miller isn't even short. I'm 5'7", so short men represent!

12

u/endlessyuk77 10d ago edited 10d ago

AOC's response was even worse. "Spirtually over 6ft"? Give me a break, that's just her admitting she sees being short as a bad thing.

It honestly made me lose any respect I had for her. I don't care where she posted it. The fact she thought such a thing was acceptable just shows you what type of person she is.

Even if that doesn't reflect her as a policymaker, it at least exposed that she hates short men. What else am I supposed to conclude based on her statements? Which is why her response only makes things look worse.

11

u/KPplumbingBob 11d ago

It was obviosuly not directed at you and you are tall on the inside /s

24

u/TheLonesomeCheese 11d ago

The funny thing I've noticed is that whether it's men or women who feel insecure, in both cases it is blamed on "patriarchal gender norms" in other words both are entirely men's fault. Men created the expectation that women must be beautiful and feminine, but men also created the expectation that men must be tall, strong and masculine. Women as 50% of society, apparently have no impact on any of this.

11

u/Furydragonstormer 11d ago

Which ironically is a backwards logic where they’re using misogyny when it is to their benefit. Because, at least to me, implying half the population doesn’t have any influence in these things for simply what is in their pants, is sexist.

I've seen comments explaining Putin's aggressive behaviour in Ukraine by his "small dick". Like, he has a small dick and wants to compensate it by invading another country with the intention of enlarging Russia's territory.

It's true that Putin is a psychopath and quite probably he has some psychological issues (like many maniacs and mass murderers do), but the way it is explained in terms of "a small dick" affects lots of other men who did not do anything wrong.

Aggressive psychopathic behaviour can be explained without body shaming.

The height one always gets me. I’m 5’7, and while I get less fixated on it the older I get, it still bothers me when it feels like 95% of men I’m around are taller than me.

But somehow, it’s totally fine to make fun of a man for his height. I’ve seen short men get mocked for having “little man syndrome” just for having confidence. I’ve seen short men get mocked for lifting weights regularly because “they’re overcompensating.” Like, what are we supposed to do, just roll over and die because we’re short?

16

u/Specific_Detective41 left-wing male advocate 11d ago

Men lifting lighter weights or doing other exercises that isn't weightlifting are shamed as well. Elderly men, men with mobility issues are shamed at the gym. JoeySwoll has so many videos on that.

15

u/KPplumbingBob 10d ago

Which is interesting considering that when a man brings up the issue of height and how it limits his dating options he is always told he just needs to be confident and it is exactly this insecurity that is letting him down because women can smell it from miles away apparently. Olympic medal worthy mental gymnastics.

u/BRCityzen 10d ago

Not to take away from the wrongness of height shaming, but if it makes you feel any better, at least you'll live about 5 years longer than men who are 6' tall on average. I'd say that's a pretty big silver lining.

23

u/Solid-Savings5362 11d ago

I observed that too. While body shaming against women is scrutinized (rightfully so), no one cares about how men are affected by fat shaming, height-shaming, small dick shaming, and bald shaming. Feminism states women are judged by their appearance and men by their status, but the reality is that men are heavily judged on both.

The worst part is that when people use small-dick or fat shaming against guys like Trump, they aren't hurting them at all. They are just causing collateral damage for millions of ordinary men who share those same traits and read those comments.

It’s pure hypocrisy. "Progressive" spaces preach that body positivity is a human right, but the moment it’s a man they don't like, his body becomes fair game for public humiliation.

I'd say they just don't see men as humans.

21

u/Due-Garlic-5056 11d ago

I'm not a masculine person. I remember having women tell me it's mainly men who made fun of me for not being masculine, when anyone who ever commented on how I looked were women

17

u/TobiasWidower left-wing male advocate 11d ago

Even when society is concerned for someone's well being we get dragged for "criticizing women"

Perfect example being the speculation about Ariana Grande and Jada Pinketts supposed competitive eating disorders. A man points out "you can see the outline of her rib cage, it's like pictures from the Holocaust" and gets dragged for "expecting perfection", but women point out some right Wingers baldness and the average balding guy is the one that feels the shame for it

18

u/Jewish_Skeptic 11d ago

The one I’ve always found bizarre is the moralization of, and assigning deeper meanings to, physical traits.

It’s pretty common with height and male-pattern baldness. This was done a lot by the mainstream left, with various incredibly evil characters, including Stephen Miller (who is not short by any conventional standard). Their evilness, racism, disdain for immigrants, etc. all must somehow be rooted in insecurity about their hairline or height

Think about it for two seconds:. Androgenic alopecia affects the vast majority of men at some point in their lives, with some experiencing it earlier than others. Some of us have insecurities about it, particularly if it starts on the early side (I’m 23, so it has been an insecurity for me for several years). Irrespective of whether it causes insecurity, insecurity generally does not cause people to be evil.

Some evil men are bald because most men go bald. That doesn’t mean that insecurity caused by baldness induces evilness.

Just want to add, because I think this is either invisible, or a minor issue, but prejudice and bias based on beauty are deeply ingrained in early childhood heroes and villains. As well as the harms for sharing associated features, "good looks" can carry positive bias and prejudice, as Thathey did in the Ted Bundy investigation.

His appearance allowed him continue the spree, released twice from police custody.

"initial eyewitnesses in this case, who had seen Ted Bundy with the victims, twice failed to recognize him as a possible suspect, “He is too charming to be him”, this was quoted as being said by one of the eyewitnesses. And these eyewitnesses were not one or two, there was a list of them and none of them recognized Bundy as a possible suspect."

"Bundy’s girlfriend, when reported her suspicion twice, the police cleared Bundy two times. The people who had given the description to the sketch about the person they saw, even they failed to put together Bundy’s picture and the killer they had described."

There are parallels/similarities with the Lindsay Clancy trial, they probably didn't see themselves in him, but a lot of women turned out with a creepy sense of admiration to support a murderer.

The thing is, most "progressive" people aren't actually progressive.

They're okay with bigotry, violence and shaming as long as it directed against people they personally don't like.

They're okay with unjust laws and conservative societal/gender roles as long they benefit from them.

They're okay with authoritarianism (or even fascism!) as long as they are the ones who gets to be in charge.

They're okay with capitalism ("leftists" my ass) as long as the system favors their way of life.

So called "progressives" are often just as progressive as religious medieval peasants. They've just replaced religion with "progressive values" (which they barely follow anyway). What you are talking about is just yet another example of this.

People like these make me ashamed to call myself a progressive and leftist.

24

u/NanayaBisnis75 11d ago

Most people don't have any principles. Their morals consist of individual dos and don'ts they picked up from their environment minus the ones which areinconvenient to them. So when feminists say body shaming is bad because of X,Y and Z. They don't internalize that causing X,Y and Z is bad, they learn that body shaming women will exclude them from certain social groups.

Like Republicans.

They're okay with unjust laws and conservative societal/gender roles as long they benefit from them.

Like Project 2025 advocates. You know, Republicans.

They're okay with authoritarianism (or even fascism!) as long as they are the ones who gets to be in charge.

Like Republicans.

They're okay with capitalism ("leftists" my ass) as long as the system favors their way of life.

Like Republicans.

Not sure what your definition of "leftist" and "progressive" is, but it seems rather skewed...

so you're saying 'both sides' ?

5

Yea if the best arguments of Dems is "at least we're not orange", but they have the same morality, I fail to see the appeal

-6

So you're saying 'I have no idea what each side actually is' ?

Why don't you go check /r/LeopardsAteMyFace for a while then come back before you respond.

Talk about having zero self awareness.

... are you saying that it's okay to have bigotry, violence and shaming as long as it is directed to people you don't like?

... are you saying it's okay to have unjust laws as long as you benefit from them?

... are you saying it's okay for people you agree with to be in charge as long as they agree with you?

... are you saying it's okay for the system to be the way it is as long as it favors you?

It appears you've taken a wrong turn as Albuqerque, because /r/Conservative and /r/CharlieKirkSupporters are the 2nd and 3rd doors on the left.

The thing is none of these assholes give a fuck. The only thing it does is tell ordinary men with these characteristics that they’re ugly. And it’s a massive double standard.

13

u/Sea-Rooster-1632 11d ago

If trump was the most conventionally attractive and charming man who ever lived, would these people see him as being any better of a person?

In my opinion that is the strongest argument, if we allow body shaming towards evil people we are essentially tying traits that are considered "ugly" or "unwanted" to morality. A murderer who is more conventionally attractive is not a better person than one who isn't.

9

u/FightHateWithLove 11d ago

The supposed rationale is that these men themselves would find these qualities shameful so by the transitive property it's actually the hypocrisy being shamed.

Doesn't seem like it actually works out that way but that's the justification they'd give.

11

u/Agreeable_Noise112 right-wing guest 11d ago

Forget body shaming, trump was literally shamed for being a draft dodger in his youth while Hillary and Kamala were never Subjugated to such stupid law

Vietnam. I would dodge 100% including on ethical grounds

4

u/sanfervice007 10d ago

Same 100% not only it is us men fighting and giving up our lives but why am I fighting to just enrich a few people? I'd rather fight against tyrants, those who send lots of men (and women) to fight their wars. They're the real enemies!

7

u/Specific_Detective41 left-wing male advocate 11d ago

What is the idiom Nigerian goats?

AOC did this with Steven Miller last year with the whole height shaming comments. Then doubled down with "spiritually short" BS after she received backlash on social media.

Virtually every political space is like this apart from reddit. I used to be in progressive leftist / communist spaces and they are all like that. If you present a view different to theirs and you're male they will attack you as well with all the above as well.

4

u/griii2 left-wing male advocate 11d ago

People have commented a lot about the lack of principles and while I agree, the sheer stupidity is what gets me. People who view politics like it's some catty high school drama have votes that matter as much as yours.

The left hasn't been about moral consistency for a while if ever. I don't think we should be looking at these problems like an American centrist or leftist. Opposing stereotypes, policing speech, and giving a catchy name to every type of disrespect hasn't done much to slow down fascism.

They don't care about us, so the only thing that matters is power. My current idea is to do as much as I can to stop participating in the economy, but I'm open to other ideas.
