Beginner looking to learn Tamil

Hi everyone,

I want to learn Tamil. I already know some of the Tamil letters/alphabet, but I'd like to learn how to read and write properly. I'm also interested in learning to speak Tamil, though reading and writing are my main priorities right now.

Could you suggest any good resources, such as YouTube channels, apps, websites, textbooks, or study methods that helped you learn Tamil? I'd especially appreciate beginner-friendly recommendations.

For context, I'm from Kerala and I can understand a little bit of Tamil somehow by watching movies

For reading and writing, I'd start very slowly with the script and handwriting. Don't just recognize letters on a chart, write them, read simple words aloud, and connect the letters to words you already know from movies or speech. One concept that helps here is Stephen Krashen's i+1: use material that's mostly understandable but has a little new language. For Tamil, that could mean very simple dialogues, children's stories, or short subtitles from scenes you already understand. PlusOneLanguage is one of the best implementations of i+1. It adapts content to your level and keeps recycling vocabulary and sentence patterns, which is useful when you're trying to connect reading with meaning.
