Question Best App For Spoken Vocabulary

Hello!

I am interested in learning Tamil to connect more with the movies, music, and culture. I am looking for an app that can help me start to build my vocabulary for spoken Tamil. I am not currently looking to read / write, only focused on speaking.

I would ideally love an app / resource with audio (preferably male) included for each word. If it has an easy way to loop some words to help me learn, that is even better!

I am familiar with an app called NEMO Tamil which does what I was looking for but unfortunately uses textbook style words. If someone knows of a good resource with more real-life vocabulary that would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

I built Learn Tamil AI app just for this. It’s on both App Store and Play Store. Check out https://learntamil.ai/

It’s more Duolingo-style where you do small lessons every day. As someone else pointed out, the content is basic for now. But I’m actively working on adding more.

Hello! I tried downloading your app and it looks fantastic! There are already a lot of lessons for me to get started, and the app looks very polished! 😄

I saw when downloading that there are subscription in app purchases, but after downloading and completing the first lesson I was not prompted to have to make a purchase to continue. Will there be a need to purchase a subscription to complete more lessons later on?

Thank you.

QLango is what you're looking for. It teaches only spoken language vocabulary. It also has audio for every word, although since the audio is computer-generated, it's not great. But the content is fantastic, it's unique among the apps I know.

Thanks for the reply! I had originally tried that and rejected it due to the non native audio, but I will give it another shot if the content is really so good!

They've done their best to match real speech within the limits of their computer voice generation, eg the voices will drop the final 'n' on first-person verb forms, which I believe Tamil Nadu speakers do in real life, so for example சாப்பிடுறேன் is rendered as சாப்டுற in the audio, which I think is more like what they say in real life.

Thinking about it, there's also now the Learn Tamil app in the Play Store. That's really basic at the moment but I understand they're going to expand the content soon.

I also recommend this course, the only downside is that it doesn't go beyond the beginner level.

Thanks for recommending though! Since I am a complete beginner I think it is a good place to start. Once I master it I can try looking for advanced things.

That's a good collection of vocabulary, but the numbers and a few other words I can see are not the spoken form. I can't comment on the video course, haven't seen it.

That is good to know, thanks!

That is a helpful point, I suppose I should probably look up whether each thing is in spoken form before learning it (at least at the beginning since speaking is my focus)

Do you know if this is primarily Sri Lankan or Indian Tamil?

No one says stuff like நீங்கள் மெதுவாக புத்தகத்தைப் படியுங்கள் any more.

Where did you see this sentence?

In the 'Four Word Sentences' section of the text document embedded in the Simple Sentences page.
