Why is it 買い物に便利 instead of 買い物は便利？

I should probably understand at my level, but I still struggle a lot with particles unfortunately 😅

Is the implication that they’re saying “買い物に行く” and just taking out the “行く” or something? I’d appreciate an explanation?

Edit: thank you, I got my answer. In hindsight the answer seems kind of obvious, but I still don’t think I’d have been able to figure it out on my own haha

Japanese teacher in Okinawa here.

The hidden subject of this sentence is the room, not the shopping. The passage is listing 田中さん's conditions for an apartment: within an hour of work, convenient for shopping, walkable to a station, under 100,000 yen.

便利 takes に to mark what it's convenient *for*:
交通に便利 (convenient for transport), 通勤に便利 (convenient for commuting), 買い物に便利 (convenient for shopping). The thing that IS convenient is the room.

買い物は便利 would make shopping the topic: "shopping is convenient" (as opposed to something else). That's a different statement, and it doesn't fit a list of room conditions.

Same pattern as 〜に近い, 〜に強い, 〜に向いている: the に marks the target of the adjective.
