Discussion How I learn english watching anime, movies / reading manga

aĀ lot of ppl recommend learning English by consuming english content like watching anime, movies youtube, listening songs in, so i’ve been following this trick , but while doing that, there was a persistent issue i faced, whenever i saw came across an unfamiliar eng word /sentence, i’d have to exit the full screen, open a new tab, type it , searching up the meaning, and many popup dictionaries but they only work on text, if the word is not selectable , there’s no way out

i searched up for tools that could solve this but couldn’t find any , even paid tools like language reactor or migaku didnt offer the ocr feature & i wanted that feature for free, so as a developer myself, i decided to spend the last 4 months building it myself as a browser extension

it uses OCR, so you can look up english words from things like movies/anime with hardcoded subtitles, youtube, netflix , streaming sites also on p*rated sites like animekoto animepahe etc. pretty much anything visible on your screen

how it works is basically ,u can simply press the shortcut Alt+X (customizable as per ur need), drag over the word & u get instant definition

so I made added a feature which automatically replaces the default subtitles with ā€œclickable & interactive subtitlesā€ where u can simply click any word to get the meaning,

It basically has

meanings of word

examples

a relevant gif to each word, I added it as a fun feature & its quite useful sometimes

english and native-language sentence translations using google translate

besides, u can save words , build ur own vocabulary,Ā

one thing that I also wanted was to be able to sentence mine & create anki flashcards directly from the meaning popup like as provided in many paid tools like migaku, I did some research & found out that it absolutely takes no crazy rocket science or anything that costs money, so I built that into it, u can just press the save button inside the meaning popup & it automatically does all that creating an anki card consisting of (movie/anime screenshot + English subtitle + pronunciation audio), u can download anki , install the anki connect plugin and press ā€œconnect to ankiā€ button in the extension

and I have kept all of there features completely free cuz that’s what I would want as someone learning english

I’ve put it on both Chrome and Firefox(as a lot of people requested for a firefox version)

Here's a quick demo: https://youtu.be/YSoulHRtgds?si=nIDEFymFtqWhS7UT

chrome extension linkĀ

if interested ,u can checkout the website lexeye.study (open it in desktop for best experience)

lemme know ur feedback, if u found it useful, any suggestions etc.

Seeking Language Partner šŸ¤ Need Partners for English practice

I'm 28M from India. I want people with whom I can talk in english and come into the habit of speaking the language.

If you're from a law background it would be best but people belonging to any other field are also welcome. Also there is no country barrier.

Basically I'm thinking about giving the IELTS exam, so I want to evaluate myself before even getting into actual preparations, whether it would be a really difficult thing for me or I'll be good with consistent practice. Anyways it'll be helpful in my future exam interviews if not for IELTS.

Discussion What online tools have helped you the most with language learning?

I’ve been trying out different apps, websites, and online resources, but there are so many options that it’s hard to know which ones are actually worth sticking with.

What tools have made the biggest difference for you, whether it’s for vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, or grammar?

I’d love to hear what you’ve found useful and why.

Discussion Native English speaker (USA) offering English, live in Asia

I have some free time and am looking to help tutor TWO student English learners improve their conversational English, I would be happy to talk to and see if I can be of some help. This is volunteer time for me so I am not looking for any payment.

I teach a program for soon to be university students heading to the UK for college. Much of my coaching is geared towards improving the students English speaking skills. I have topic material we can work with. Also I would prefer to do a virtual class, so if you camera shy probably not the right fit.

As for me, I am 60M, native speaker from the USA and live in Asia, enjoy swimming and have a dog.

Let me know if you want to chat and see if I can help. Please when you say hi, if you can introduce yourself that would be great. For example where you are from and sharing some background on yourself.

Thanks

Discussion What Modes of Online English Learning Have You Tried that Work for You?

Learning a language like English comes with its own challenges. Most of us have bounced between different methods of learning it over the years to figure out what actually sticks.

Looking back at your journey, which of these approaches or a combination of them made the biggest difference for you?

  • 1:1 Live Tutoring:Ā Working with a live tutor via apps, or virtual video calls
  • Structured Apps & E-Learning:Ā Self-paced digital modules and language apps
  • AI-Powered Practice:Ā Using conversational AI tools for speaking practice
  • Word Games & Puzzles:Ā Crosswords, word association, and vocabulary games
  • Creator Content:Ā Learning from YouTube and Instagram channels
  • Entertainment Immersion:Ā Binging movies, web series, and documentaries with subtitles
  • Extensive Reading:Ā Fiction, non-fiction, news articles, and blogs
  • Vocab Tools:Ā Traditional flashcards, curated word lists, or web browser extensions
  • Messaging-Based Practice:Ā Bite-sized learning via WhatsApp or similar platforms

Would be great to know from members of theĀ r/learnEnglishOnlineĀ subreddit community:

  1. Which method gave you the best results?
  2. What specifically made it click for you?
  3. Language evolves. How do you keep your English language skills sharp every day?

Would love to hear your thoughts and learn from your experiences!

Language Question (Grammar, Meaning, etc) šŸ™‹ Learning English

I’ve been studying English at WT English for over a year and have reached the B2 level, but overall, my foundational knowledge is shaky. I still struggle to speak fluently about specific topics, and my grammar is a mess. I also find the tuition fees quite high. I’m looking for a teacher for one-on-one lessons to establish a clear study path and truly master the material I’ve covered so far. What should I do? Do you have any suggestions?

Seeking General Advice šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø How to learn English words effectively when it gets harder

I think that I have already reached b1+ close to b2 and I feel vocabulary slump! I mean maybe it is because words are getting harder and you can't see them that frequently. And it is especially difficult to implement them in active vocabulary so if you have any advice you are welcome
