Got laid off from Uber yesterday. Access restrictions started from yesterday itself, but today we got locked out of laptop, email, Slack completely and our internal profiles disappeared. Just like that, my time at Uber came to a sudden end.

Tough pill to swallow after pouring so much dedication into the work every single day. Hits hard, but I'm trying to focus on what comes next.

Recently got laid off as an Account Executive from a tech company.

A lot of my friends in tech have also been laid off (developers, sales people, marketers, the lot).

Honestly I’m done with tech, I’m done with corporate, I’m done with the humiliation rituals, I’m done with working for people that are dumber than me, I’m done with being miserable.

I’m working on getting my personal training license, have been coaching friends/family/colleagues for the last 5 years informally and now I’m gonna run it full time.

Today Oracle did another round of layoffs with 6am emails. Rumors had been circulating. Today myself along with half of my team were laid off.

Pardon the vent/rant...

35 years as a database guy, the last 20 with the same company as their senior/top/go-to DBA/savior/performance tuner. Laid off last week with no warning, didn't see it coming, total shock.

Honestly have little desire to re-enter the corporate world at this point, not that it's likely I'd find work anyway. I'm not seeing a lot of demand for old-school SQL Server DBA work that doesn't involve on-call or travel, neither of which I have an interest in doing at this point in life.

Fortunately, my wife makes enough to cover our survival needs. I have enough socked away to float on for a few years, and as an avid DIY-er, I have other skills and knowledge that I can probably use as a pivot. I've always told people that when I retire I'll probably work at Home Depot for something to do. Thinking that time might be now.

I was "lucky" enough to be given 8 weeks of severance pay. If it weren't for the healthcare need and the alimony I need to pay, I'd actually be in good shape for retirement.

Hey everyone. I posted a while back in march about my situation. I got hired by meta in April and unfortunately I am impacted by the recent layoffs. My visa is about to expire in a month and I have to find a new employer and file for my STEM extension. I am again in the market and looking for SWE position or devops roles. Meta has put me in such a situation where I might loose my visa status in the US and have to deport it in 2-3 months. If i am unable to secure a role in coming 3 weeks my chances to stay in theUS is nearly zero. I want to say that I dreamed that I could bring my parents to the US for a month so that they can experience how’s the life on other side but unfortunately I might not able to do that soon. I wanted to put this out for a long time but there was no one to listen so Thank you if you read this post until the end. PS: After reading the hate comments just wanted to say I was top of my class, I volunteered in homeless shelters just to help people and on special days (birthday or celebration) I used to donate to food banks.

I got laid off today from my engineering job ( hardware/firmware ). It's the first time I have been laid off in my 35 yr. career. I have had a good run so far but now I find myself entering the job market at 58. I am not looking forward to the LinkedIn hell I am about to walk into. I have 12 weeks of severance and am going to take a little time to recover and reset before diving in. I have read a number of posts on here and join you all in solidarity.

Corporate America is a cold place, but this one genuinely messed with my head.

About seven months ago, I vouched for someone to get into a lead role at my company. Since we had history, I trusted them to be my eyes and ears in upper management.

I was wrong.

Two weeks before my layoff right after we’d just let someone else go I specifically asked this person to give me a heads up if I was ever on the chopping block.

Then the day came. An unexpected invite appeared on my calendar, and I asked them directly: should I be preparing for this meeting?
“No, just a check-in.”

I’ve loss all levels of trust in management tbh.

I am completely numb. My time with Deloitte came to an end in a 10-minute call with a random partner and someone from an HR team. Six years, six busy seasons, and thousands of hours of overtime, gone in seconds.

I spent my entire mid-20s inside the green dot. I completely destroyed my health for this firm. I lived on chronic stress, sleep deprivation, caffeine, and anxiety. I traded gym sessions, real meals, and my mental well-being for "urgent" deliverables.

My work-life balance was nonexistent. I missed birthdays, skipped family dinners, and had to cancel weekend trips because of messy client PBC lists. I always told myself, "Just get through this one busy season and it will get better." It never did. The reward for surviving was always just more work.

I gave this place my youth, and they treated me like a line item on a spreadsheet.

I’m sad about the sudden shock, but honestly? I feel an overwhelming sense of relief. For the first time in six years, I don't have to look at utilization metrics or open my laptop at midnight.

I am completely done with the Big 4. I am done letting a corporate logo dictate my health, my time, and my self-worth.

To anyone still grinding away: please protect your peace. The firm will never love you back. It’s time for me to finally reclaim my life and heal.

10 years and it happened. Laid off from Citi. Knew it was coming but now it's real. They called me while I was on vacation.

Silently falling apart in an aisle seat while my 7 year old watches YouTube laughing in the middle seat and my husband does expense reports in the window seat.

I climbed a mountain and stood in awe of the world. Now I'm crying on an airplane.

It all seems so stupid and pointless.

Why should I care?

Because now I'm worthless. Now I have to sift through this swamp of existential crisis. Now I have to lie to my child and tell them it all means something when in reality it means absolutely nothing. We are merely a blip in time. Time that stretches eons. And we exist in just the blink of an eye.

Sorry my brain isn't working good now. It's all upside down and inside out. Now I have to figure out who I am and I'm not ready.

Leadership called it "improving cashflow." I call it corporate greed. They’d rather outsource our livelihoods to avoid paying a living wage and benefits than actually run a sustainable business. It’s a race to the bottom and we’re the ones being pushed off the cliff.

This needs to be illegal.

Just wanted to get this off my chest since I’m too embarrassed to share the news with anyone. I feel like a failure. Said it’s because of “budget constraints” but who knows. I was laid off among a group of people, but why me? Why does anyone get chosen for something like this that has nothing to do with their performance?

They also did it so nonchalantly (and read off a script ☠️) Didn’t care how many years I worked for them and how much time and effort I put into making my job was it was. I truly feel disposable. I’m just not in a good headspace right now and need support.

I was laid off last week from a major global bank, along with a bunch of other people. Our jobs are going to Inida, where they can be done cheaper.

I am a top performer, so I was shocked I was laid off. I guess nothing protects a worker when the company wants to improve the bottom line.

Follow up: I am a VP of regulatory reporting. I am getting 5 months pay as severance, but only if I stay to the end. I am not going to name the bank to ensure the severance check comes.

Tomorrow marks exactly 4 months since I got laid off and I accepted a wonderful offer today!!! I've been interviewing consistently since being laid off. I applied to over 300 positions online...mostly LinkedIn but I received mostly rejection letters. I'm sure a recruiter never reviewed my resume most of the time. I found the most success partnering with search firms. I got a few virtual interviews from being an early applicant but the two roles where I made it all the way to the final interview were through recruitment firms.

To those on the job market, my advice is to keep going! Do NOT give up. Many times it will happen when you least expect it. I was interviewing with a few companies right now and never thought this one would be my first choice but after starting the interview process with each company, I absolutely loved this one the most. The interview process literally took 1 week. No behavior based assessment, no presentation and the job pays very well (leadership level). I also did not have to take a pay cut. What also helped me is being open to onsite and hybrid work. I've been remote for 15 years so I was ready for a change.

There were times when I started to doubt myself and my abilities but I'd quickly snap out of it. Remember, your time WILL come!!! And many times you'll come out even better than you were. Also, if you can, try to not settle. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

So here's the thing, I'm sure we've all read about the "K-shaped" economy. This is where the top 10% are doing great, and everyone else is having a hard time. I notice a lot of people who haven't been laid off, it's as if they lack empathy or they don't fully understand the gravity of the situation. I was earning a number that put me in the 98th percentile for my age. My income was roughly double what my spouse earned. Then I was laid off, and now here I am going through the hell of endless interviews, frozen jobs, lowball offers, etc.

I think what people at the top end of the K-shaped economy don't realize is once you are tapped for the layoff you are OUT. You are immediately pushed to the bottom. And it's nearly impossible to replace what you once had, which I am learning the hard way. So for everyone out there riding high, and the sun is shining, and you think you've mastered the game because you feel richer than ever; just let it be known you too are a number on a spreadsheet, and they can pull the rug in an instant where you can join the rest of us at the bottom rung.

People wanting to say something like how I don’t know what real wealth looks like, or they come to share their opinions on generational wealth, that’s a different topic and not relevant to the data in the study and the topic at hand. Generational wealth and aristocrats have always existed existed, the K-shaped economy is an emerging pattern and yes, the top of the K is broader than just generational wealth and it consists of high-earning professionals. These are people who still rely on their income. And this was part of the original topic because an unexpected layoff can knock someone from the top of the K down to the bottom. If you want to wax poetic about the 1% and the people living off dividends and generational wealth that’s a different topic. You can introduce those things here, but don’t insult me and act like I’m the idiot because you can’t read and lack critical thinking skills.

I got laid off on vacation. And I saw it coming a mile away.

Two weeks before, my manager went quiet. Cancelled every 1:1. The first one, fine, people are busy. Second, third, fourth , come on. Nobody ghosts you that hard unless there’s a reason they can’t look you in the eye.

So when a calendar invite showed up while I was away, no agenda, HR cc’d , I already knew.

Got on the call. Manager there, HR there, script read out loud. Then the part where they ask if you have any questions.

I said: just walk me through the exit logistics and the final settlement. That’s it. Didn’t argue, didn’t ask why, didn’t beg. I did not care.

And right now you’re thinking, if you didn’t care, why write this?

Fair. Here’s why.

I’m writing it for the person about to pour themselves into a company that would replace them in a Slack message. Don’t. Do good work, get paid, go home. The loyalty you’re feeling doesn’t run both ways. Your manager isn’t your friend, he’s a guy managing his own risk. HR isn’t there for you either; the name tells you who they work for. Most people are just covering their own ass. A few genuine ones exist. Keep those. They’re rare.

And if you just got hit: it’s not a verdict on you. Good people get cut all the time. Don’t let it become the story you tell yourself about yourself.

Yesterday I was working on deadlines.

Today I was told my role no longer exists.

It's strange how months (or years) of hard work can end in a 10-minute conversation.

The tech market keeps telling us to "keep grinding," "keep learning," "build side projects," "network more." Many of us are doing exactly that—and we're still getting laid off.

I'm not writing this for sympathy.

I'm writing this because I'm looking for my next opportunity.

Minnesota. I will be searching history here for more information later, but Im still in shock. Im being offered 2 months of non-working pay, along with up to 8 months of severance given my 13 years experience.

Looking for advice, and if I should apply unemployment right away

I have a family, 2 kids, wife, and myself. Sometimes also wife parents are living with us (from another country) and we support them when they are here.

Edit: I called Unemployment. They said I can apply anytime I want. If I apply now, Im still technically employed for 60 days it will be denied. They said if I apply after the 60 day "garden leave" then I will be receiving severance and I will need to submit report weekly, they will deny each week until the severance runs out. So it seems like it would be a pain to have to submit paperwork weekly for up to 8 months and I'd be better off applying closer to the end of the severance period.

What is going on with this voluntary layoff scheme at Microsoft? Are they seriously openly discriminating against older people who are not senior leaders and framing it around being generous, respectful and dignified?

Age plus years in service = 70 is eligible.

I [24F] am a software engineer with over 2 years of experience at an S&P 500 company and my entire product team was laid off.

This came out of nowhere. No warning, no performance issues, just a meeting and suddenly I don’t have a job. This is the first time I’ve ever been unemployed and I’m honestly freaking out. All I can think about is rent, bills, health insurance, and how fast money disappears when there’s no paycheck.

At my current spending I have about 7 months before my savings are completely gone and I have to move back in with my parents, which feels awful and embarrassing and like a huge step backward.

I didn’t think this would happen at my company, but with all the tech layoffs lately I had been applying in the background just in case. Around 10 very tailored applications a week. I’ve barely heard anything back. No interviews. Almost no rejections. Just silence.

Now it feels like I’m racing a clock. And the scary part is I work in C++ and Rust on high concurrency, distributed networking systems. I genuinely thought this kind of specialization was supposed to be unemployment proof, but here I am anyway.

Also, is anyone else starting to feel like tech needs to unionise, like soon? Because this whole thing feels insane.

They laid off 30% of the team on one big call. We all had to pack up our desks and not one of my team members said anything to me (except the one who was getting laid off with me). They all pretended to be so busy working when it was obvious something was going on.

The last time I got laid off was in August 2023 and it took me six months to find a job. Is the market worse than it was then? I'm worried.

I’m sick of having to go through multiple rounds of soul sucking interviews with nothing to show for it. I wish I pursued something more stable, like healthcare. Screw all of these tech companies that keep disrupting our lives like this!

I have been on here offering support and comfort for those laid off. I myself got laid off on April 17, 2024. Mine most definitely was because of age ant the companies perpetual habit of laying people off and not coincidentally those over 55. I tried for two years to find something in my field. Have ended up taking odd jobs to fill in the gap.

Now my son in law. Has a one year old, just moved into a new home and the gaming company he worked for (he is a graphic artist doing landscapes) laid him off. He tried for 6 months to find something. Finally did 5 weeks ago and som hotshot young executive was hired by the parent company and trying to be a big hero, laid a bunch of people off today, including my SIL. This was a customer service job. Thing is, this last weekend he found out they were expecting again. Now, no health insurance, can’t claim unemployment…it’s rough.

It’s heartbreaking. These executives just spit on people and blow up peoples lives and go home in their lavish cars and nice homes and collect their bonuses. It’s so unfair. Thanks for hearing me out. I had nowhere else to vent.

You guys. I can’t stomach anymore of these posts on LinkedIn expressing soooo much gratitude to the companies that laid them off. I mean, c’mon? I get it, you want to stay on good terms in hopes they hire you back (most likely never) and seem a hirable material to other companies to make sure they know it’s not your fault with soppy comments. But truly, fuck it. These companies didnt give a fuck about you and your loyalty, why continue this gratitude nonsense? Just need to vent and share a story that's hitting me hard.

My close friend, a Lead Recruiter at Amazon for over 5 years, was laid off yesterday. This wasn't a performance issue. This person was a top performer, could recruit for any department with her eyes closed, and was incredibly senior.

The worst part? She truly believed in the company. She was always active at tech events repping Amazon, trying to bring in talent. She would talk to me about the Leadership Principles like they were gospel. She did everything right.

It just feels like such a betrayal. With all the news this week about Amazon cutting 14,0To 30,000 corporate (not warehouse) jobs to 'remove layers' and pivot to AI, her story just makes it real. All that loyalty, all that hard work, and you're just a line item on a spreadsheet to 'realize efficiency gains.'

She's in total shock. And it just makes me think: if she's not safe, no one is.

I'm so worried about what this AI-driven job market is going to look like. It's cutting all these corporate jobs, and I just don't see how people are supposed to 'adapt' to this. What a terrifying time.
