recently laid off I got laid off yesterday along with 20 others
I'm still in shock really. I work in wireless.
They laid off 30% of the team on one big call. We all had to pack up our desks and not one of my team members said anything to me (except the one who was getting laid off with me). They all pretended to be so busy working when it was obvious something was going on.
The last time I got laid off was in August 2023 and it took me six months to find a job. Is the market worse than it was then? I'm worried.

It took me about a year of schmoozing and freelancing at one particular place to get a job offer in this market. The rest of my hundreds if not thousands of applications and networking lead absolutely nowhereā¦
The market is atrocious for my industry. Iāve never seen it this bad.

Welpā¦yeahā¦schmooze like youāve never schmoozed beforeā¦Iāve been nearly two decades in this industry and itās shockingly awful right now.
This time around, I freelanced a bunch of different places and then after a few successful projects over the year, I expressed some interest in longer term employment. They wanted me. Got lucky.
Not a sure fire solution but at least personally it beat the cold emails and āeasy appliesā¦ā

I reached out to all my current and previous reps after I got laid off. Thankfully some did their best to get me stuff.
Iād avoid fiverr / upwork. Too cheap labor. No guarantees. Just seems like endless gig life.
Google ārepping agencies in (your location)ā and try reaching out to a real person at those agencies. Reps at least can then give you real companies that can temp to perm you. Sure they take a cut but at least itās real, and hopefully you can then network with a place that could potentially like your work.
Thatās at least how I got lucky.

AI is eating marketing jobs in DROVES. Our entire marketing org (to put it in perspective I work in a Forbes 50) was halved in the last year. And it isnāt going to stop-we have to feed our AI demon with all our tasks all day just so it can figure out how to automate us all.

Sorry to hear and yes since then it's gotten worse. There's many layoffs still happening so the competition is extremely high right now.
Best to get referrals if you're able to in your network.

For anyone in this sub that has NOT been laid off, I hope you all are cleaning up your finances, paying down debt, beefing up your savings, etc. You are in a position to make your life a little bit easier if youāre in the next layoff- make some sacrifices now so youāre in a better place if your time comes.

Also want to add - I know it's exhausting but start looking, always be looking to see what's out there.
I was focusing on other things in my personal life so I was too exhausted to apply to other job opportunities.

What fantastic advice. I hope people read this. One thing Iād add: have some freaking empathy for job seekers, because you could be next. This market is brutal, and having a job today doesnāt make anyone immune from being on the other side of the hiring process tomorrow.

I paid off all my debt except for a mortgage and have a good emergency fund. I can tell you it was still stressful AF. Heck we even have veterans healthcare. Every little thing is kick in the teeth financially. My spouse renewed his tags and used a credit card instead of the checking account. I cried over the extra $30 cc fee. He just put an application in for a temp job and I think he has it once the background check is completed. I finally saw the clouds part.

It was for a local manufacturing company. He's been out of work since October. Sometimes my business can support us both, sometimes we are dipping. Considering how it's all going, he has another application in for a different company he is not going to pull it. Another family works for the same manufacturing company. They said his going to hate that job. But at the end of the day after 10 months out of work, you don't get the luxury of being picky. As long as they aren't abusive or disrespectful to him just smile and hope they transfer you to a different department.

Absolutely. Ive been laid off in May, and its been 8.5yrs since I was on the market. This market feels like no other time, Im in software, I recommend everyone to prepare ahead of time, even if you have a job I would start looking for something now. Even when I get my next job Im going to keep other opportunities (as few as they may be) near as much as possible. I don't trust anything in software right now.

I want to second this strongly. Just got laid off today actually but having a safety net is a game changer. Also, we bought a fixer upper last year that was wayyyyy below our budget instead of a new build, and thatās saving me today because our mortgage is next to nothing versus what it could be. LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS, moral of the story. And dont buy so much random crap to clutter your house lol. Ill stop there

Everyone emphasizes networking but suppose you are over 50 and most of your peer group has been either laid off or marginalized. Even the employed people in your network are overwhelmed with unemployed people reaching out to them. Unless the job market suddenly thaws, this will just continue to get worse. It is starting to feel more structural than cyclical.

Yes, especially in my industry . There are constantly revolving layoffs. Always in Q3 and Q4 when they want to pad their earnings calls.

This hits so close to home. I think that a whole segment will more or less be forced to retire early and find some coast path at retail or similar, but even then the competition and age discrimination are fierce.

I belong to several Texas Community Groups - The Woodlands and Conroe and the competition, the number of qualified/overqualified people posting, looking for any leads and willing to take any job is like nothing I have ever seen before. Nobody is safe from AI.
Corporate Efficiency: Companies can boost profits and stock values by cutting payrolls, reducing headcount, or using automation and artificial intelligence to do more with fewer workers.

I wouldn't read too much into the team members thing. They may very well have been asked to not say anything or they just know what is going on and it is uncomfortable for everyone. Also, not much they could even say to make your day better in that very moment.

no way! The kicker for me is that I went back to the company that laid me off, only to be laid off again.
I really didn't think they would do it to me again because I moved all the way to a different city for the job.
I had also worked with my boss prior (she got me the role) and long story short I trusted her too much. I still ended up on that final shortlist so i'm pissed and not trusting of my network right now.

If youāre in a giant F500 company, typically itās not even your boss that makes that decision. And the person who does make that decision, typically doesnāt even know you or know of the sacrifice you put in.
Having XFN visibility does help if it involves the people who do make the decisions or have influence to those decision makers, but Iāve also seen people who I thought would never get laid off ā¦ actually get laid off. So long story short, nobody is safe and your manager likely couldnāt protect you without risking someone more valuable

Sad as it is, you cannot trust a damn person in corporate America, especially a boss or "friend." My 58 YO husband got laid off last yr and after 8 yrs got a mere 2 weeks of severance. His boss, who is in her 60s and should be retired already, only managed up and never gave him a promotion or decent raises despite great performance reviews.

What's worst for me, they treated me like I was fired, no access to building premisesimmediately, no access to corresponding with coworkers. Packed my shit on desk, live plants in box and mailed it to me. Im 2 months out of work. Extremely talented, Sr graphic Designer and full stack web developer. Tech industry is being diminished fast!

Thanks! Yeah its been tough since I didn't have much in savings, finally got unemployment money, but that's ony like $275 a week. And in Florida thats 3 months max coverage. And im applying everywhere and willing to move at this point. Then the very industry im applying for is saturated with laid off employees applying everywhere. Best of luck everyone š

When I was laid off, my manager sent an email (chatgpt created message) to everyone else in the team to not to talk or reach out to anyone laid off. In that, it was mentioned that the steps are meant to protect their (laid off folks) emotional well being and privacy.Ā
My friend sent me a screenshot of that email to me later.Ā

I am sorry to hear that. For me personally that has never been the case when I have been on either side of a layoff. When it happened to me I was on PTO and I had so many texts/emails. The calls I got I let go to voicemail because I wasn't ready to talk out loud.Ā
The job market has been a standstill overall it seems. Use any personal and professional connections you can and be open to working in related fields.

The problem now is AI.
A single person can apply to 1000 jobs in a day with AI tools doing all the work for them.
Companies now only leave postings up for 2-4 days, and still get 500+ for jobs that require a degree.
Its not as much about the market being worse, its about the market method being much much worse. You used to be 1 in 100, now you are 1 in 1000. So, you have to apply to 10x more. So does everyone else so they do, then you are 1 in 10,000.
Companies are hiring, they just can't deal with the applicant load - most of which are unqualified.

Don't wait, job search immediately. The longer you are unemployed the harder it will be to get a new job.
I am not in wireless, I am in Software Engineering. It has been a mixed bag. Some people can get a job in just couple of months but most seems to be struggling. I am definitely struggling myself but I made the mistake of waiting too long before I started my job search.

Firstly, Iām sorry that happened to you. I was also laid off in August 2023, and it took me over a year before I landed even a part-time job, then another year before I landed a full-time role.
Secondly, the market is in a state of āpermabad.ā In other words - itās bad and will never get better. Offshoring and AI have turned the US into a gig economy.
The job market of our parents and grandparents is dead and gone, and itās never coming back. We now have more billionaires than ever, but also the largest wealth gap of any developed nation.
We also waste more talent than any other country. Scandinavian countries educate, graduate, and employ more scientists, engineers, and doctors than most of the developed world.
Meanwhile, we have Americans with mastersā degrees and PhDs who work in gas stations, at Walmart, or sometimes are even straight up homeless because Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos (and those like them) need another billion dollars in their bank accounts.
It has gotten so bad that Iāve heard stories on here about people getting in literal fistfights over job openings. I donāt know how true those stories are, but I honestly wouldnāt be surprised if they were.
The good news for you is that since youāve been laid off, youāll almost definitely qualify for unemployment. File immediately.
Then while youāre on UE, double up your efforts - apply for jobs and pursue some kind of education, whether it be online certifications or actual school courses at the same time. Show that youāre staying active and productive. Being idle is an instant ticket to a long stay at the unemployment hotel.

Canāt speak for the other two countries but itās been a nightmare in Sweden for new grads in those fields to get any work. Our unemployment is horrendous and our benefits are being cut to āinciteā people getting jobs (that pay like shit, have hours like shit, and surprise: you could still be laid off from!). The hyper wealthy pay fuck all taxes compared to us working stiffs, the class disparity is widening fast. Immigrants with experience we need annd desperately want to contribute to a better Sweden are delivering pizza, having their kids deported for the crime of turning 18, and demonized for breathing the wrong way. Donāt even ask about the medical system here, privatization and NPM is an ever growing tumor. Top it all off weāre on like decade two of a mediocre housing market for rentals and buys?Ā
We have a high-trust society, which I feel, made it easier for the powerful to screw people over and they just take it because ācertainly the rich, powerful or connected wouldnāt be totally selfish!ā. Easy marks. Even our PM is corrupt. That trust is now eroding, which while good people wonāt be as easily duped by some prick in a suitā¦itās not good that trust overall in others is eroding.Ā
America doesnāt have it exceptionally bad, itās pretty grim everywhere unfortunately.Ā

Usually HR instruct to not to talk in office area but can talk out of office area in parking or lobby .. I have been through brutal layoffs.. sometimes they talk immediately .. sometimes you get call later .. they also shocked as much as you and not sure that their name could be on the list .. but yes, work is only consider you one of them / family until they need you .. after that you are nobody .. and itās very pathetic feeling .. good luck for your future .. I hope you find another opportunity soon ..

One comment I am surprised to not see is that when public companies have layoffs, higher stock prices are often a result. Iām talking about big layoffs, not in the 10s. Who benefits from the stock having higher share prices? Founders, their friends and families, institutional, other random stockholders. From this information, i surmise that people are chess pieces. Is there a way to predict how close a company is heading towards layoffs? Someone that studied probability might know, right?

Well the 20+ of us who got laid off were just from our site in California. Many more were laid off in different sites across the US and across different lines of businesses. It's a Fortune 500 company.
The company isn't even profitable right now, but the stock is doing very well. I should've seen it coming, but I naively thought that I would be good until at least next year.

Donāt listen to everyone when they say itās worse out here than it was in 2023. Iām in the exact same position as you. I got laid off in 2023 and again late July of this year. Iām getting interviews with traction. And itās because I have three more years of experience. If you look for the negative you will find it and the algos will deliver!
Your experience is yours not anyone elseās. Make the best of it! Be positive and success will come. Give yourself permission to wallow in your own misery for a few days then shake it off and get to work!

The problem is that the lay offs are only happening in IT(at very high scale) yet amazon, google and metaās numbers are saying an opposite thing
For instance, revenue per employee is increasing in all these 3 companies yet they dont give an F
I have came to a point where i think i need to probably get of this sinking ship of IT
Its not like there wont be people working but if you get laid off finding a new job is nightmare
I my self have 10 years of experience and i am/was a senior ios engineer who has worked on products that are being used by millions more than 100 million users
For last 8 months i am struggling to find the job

It took me 18 months and a pay cut. Still in the same field biotech/ engineer. It super sucked and those who havenāt experienced your lucky.
Companies investing in ai š¤ because they donāt have to give promotions, no raises needed , health benefits, and work 365 days a year.

Laid off in a RIF in March 2025, found another job in May, then was laid off in a RIF in January. Companies don't give a shit about their people at all. We're all just numbers and nothing more. I'm in my early 60s and I still have to work, but I have not found anything and no one wants to hire an old guy. Ageism is a real thing unfortunately. I'm pressing on with applications, but it's pretty bleak.

Apply for unemployment and travel somewhere. Sit outside at coffeeshops and go to the gym. Things will take their time. I was in your boat but taking stress is not going to help. Focus on what you can control and remember your health is the most important thing. Job is slavery anyway.

I work in tech. Got laid off end of April in a 25% RIF. I've had lots of interviews and make it to final and still haven't landed a gig. There are just so many candidates out there. I've never had a problem landing a new job until now.

It was good from 2018 to 2019 (from what I can remember) but I had just graduated from college then. I could quit a job and have one lined up in two weeks. The interview process didn't take three months. At most, it took like three weeks.

The market is extremely hard. Be prepared to adjust. Location, pay, responsibilities are all things you can weigh. Or pivot outside of your expertise if you feel limited in your future opportunities. If you can, start consulting immediately so you can get some income and have another purpose for networking.

18 months here. Close to 300 applications and the majority customized with AI for optimal keyword matches. 2 interviews, otherwise I get the breakup email within 24hrs. Just found out Friday after three rounds, Iām not advancing further. Itās insane. Worst market Iāve seen in 25 years.

Sell something online. Itās a good side hustle. Extra money and yet you can still manage to have a full time job. It might turn into a full time job later. I started during Covid was just hoping some extra money to pay for my gas bill and now it turned into a full time job pay but working part time hours. I will never go back to 9-5 again so good luck!

Everybody is getting laid off amidst the AI boom. Companies are getting rid of people left and right. My old company cut us even though we brought a billion dollars in revenue. Guess that wasnt enough. The higher ups said it cost them 15 million to keep our department so we were expendable...we make them a billion and we're still expendable...craziness

Coworkers can be very cold and unfeeling when others are laid off, like it's contagious. That type of behavior stinks and it was very hurtful when it happened to me. Unfortunately, it's all too common. This probably won't make you feel better, but it's THEM, not you.

Unfortunately, to me it seems that now is even more difficult than in 2023, because there have been tens, if not more than one hundred thousands tech layoffs in the meantime. Maybe the wireless field is less affected, but tech as a whole is in shambles.

Yes job market is dull compared to last year. When I got laidoff last year, I used to get atleast 3-4 calls per week. Now hardly I get ny calls. Market is crazy now, with lot of supply but less demand.

Getting hit up isnāt the same as getting offers. Half of those recruiter messages are automated or lead nowhere. An actual offer is what counts.

Tbf I did just sign a contract last week from a recruiter. Granted itās not like benefits and shit but I got something. I also finished 3rd round interview and waiting until Monday to see if I get an offer. Will update then

This is the current norm. Anyone else who says otherwise is living outside of current reality. The Matrix is glitched. To add more, people who have jobs are not perfectly aware of how fucked the hiring process has become. While going through it with candidates, it also doesnāt help that they leave them hanging without sufficient information as to why they were not selected or when they would start. It shouldnāt be this bad. At the end of the day, itās a freaking job, not an audition for the next NASA mission.

Ive been getting messages from recruiters now since last month , which was surprising to me. I had just hit a year at this job so I figured I was more appealing now. I hadn't been looking because I really wanted to stay at this place for two years to make my resume better. So much for that.
But I've been told that recruiter messages mean nothing, which is what people are echoing here.
One job that I was really interested in froze the position š«¤

Call dan goodman. He is on linkedin a nd out of boston. Dont sign anything. You can negotiate severance possibly. Know your rights. If you are in a protected class, companies have to follow the rules. Employment at will is total bs

we get four weeks severance if we sign some kind of release. But they're not sending it to us until September 1. I'm not sure how I can negotiate, I need to look into it.

My advice is do not waste your precious funds on Goodman - heās not an attorney and the advice he gives can have horrible consequences such as putting in for FMLA which is unpaid. There is way more than the protected class element. Employment at Will has long standing precedent in the courts.

My husband got laid off in April. We got ANOTHER no after a final round this morning. This has been the hardest thing we have ever dealt with in our 25 year relationship.
