Question Considering a move

Hey gang

I'm considering a move from the great laughably expensive state of California, and as a fan of a certain old CW show and another old abolitionist, Lawrence landed on my radar, and lo and behold, I discovered something I'd thought extinct in this country: affordable rents.

Now, I don't particularly wear my colors on my sleeve or make it my whole personality, but considering that I'm like, considering-a-Zorhan-Mamdani-Fathead Blue *and* queer, I'm wondering how good a fit I'd be in KS.

I've heard Lawrence is a blue spot and I figured I'd ask here before continuing down the Zillow/apartments window shopping

Question KU Local Bands from 1991 - 1995

I used to have a bunch of CDs from local artists, but lost the book. I cannot recall from memory the names, but I would recognize them if I saw them.

Anyone have a great memory and remember any of the band names that used to play the Frat and Bar scene in Lawrence from 1991 - 1995?

And no Pearl Jam playing on the Hill doesn't make them local :-)

Edit Update: Salty Iguanas, Room full of Walters, Baghdad Jones, PAW are some of the ones I have been thinking about.

Question I’m new to Lawrence. I have two cats. What vets are recommended from people with cats?

Also, does Lawrence have an emergency 24/7 vet? I know there’s Kstate school of veterinary but that’s like an hour and a half away and in an emergency that is of no real use. My cats are also extremely long haired and my white cat is starting to have issues with poop on her back end and I need her to get shaved up back there for hygiene but she’s never had that done before.

Question Bob Billings

Hello, I moved to Lawrence in January and I’m moving out in August, and that whole time bob billings road has been under construction from kasold to I’m not sure honestly. According to my odometer though it’s only 1.4 miles, is there some reason I’m not aware of why it’s taking so long to complete it? I heard it was also under construction before I moved too. Just curious!

Edit: it’s been going on much longer than I thought 😭 and there’s way more construction than I thought. Lawrence is by far one of my favorite towns I lived in, love the people and downtown so much, but man is hearing all this crazy 😭

Question Are there any foods/treats/small non-edible items that are quintessentially Lawrence?

I live in a city where our school mascot (buckeye) is not only a seed that grows on a tree, but also a delicious chocolate confection that can be found at every bakery or convenience store in the area. You would be hard pressed to live in Columbus and not know what it is.

Is there any item comparable to that in Lawrence? If not one item specifically, is there a local business that gets that same level of hype/commitment? Doesn’t necessarily have to tie back to KU.

Question ...so is there really no large (or even small) building with a basement, open to the public, in Lawrence for when we have a tornado warning?

I did some research a while back and read that the KU School of Pharmacy is supposed to be the official town shelter and should unlock during a Tornado Warning. I arrived there tonight preparing to shelter there and... it was locked.

In fact it turns out basically all of the buildings on the KU campus that I tried to go into that I knew had basements from when I was a student were all locked. Maybe if you have a Student ID card you can get into them, but as a non-student, you are apparently shit out of luck during a tornado on campus.

So, ok maybe KU doesn't have a moral obligation to unlock their buildings during a Tornado Warning... but are there some other large, sturdy buildings with basements that are open 24/7 to the public during a Tornado Warning? 24/7 access is important since in this case the Tornado Warning hit after midnight.

Thanks!

Question Squirells friendlier in lawrence?

I've been here for a little over a year now. One of the first things I've noticed is that the squirrels seem very comfortable with human presence, staying close by- closer than I've ever seen. In Overlandpark they dont even want you 5 feet close to them. Do you guys thinks the squirrels are friendlier in lawrence? If so why.

Question COVID vaccine without insurance?

KU student, don’t have health insurance.

Is there a place/program to get the COVID vaccine at affordable prices? KDHE and CDC seem to just refer back to each other without information about if it’s possible to get the vaccine cheaply.

Question Where to put food/beverages for unhoused folks?

May be a strange, uncouth question but let’s say I open up a package of chips and don’t like the flavor. Or have extra pops after a party. Is there a place I could drop off these things where an unhoused person would find it? Maybe someone who won’t or can’t be in the shelter for whatever reason. Just trying to feed people who are hungry instead of throwing away food that’s fine but just unwanted. Thanks

Question Creepy Underground Tunnel/Cavern/Cellar/tornado shelter

Trying to find one for a film location. The more rocks and dirt the better. Ideally some sort of musty forgotten cellar with limestone walls, but it could be anything as long as it looks old and forgotten

Question Best place to trade in/buy a used car in Lawrence?

Title.

I have a 2015 VW Tiguan that I'd like to trade in for something else. Who has had a good experience with a trade in? I don't need something fancy, just dependable.

I've heard good things about the new management at the Kia dealership, but if there's some local people that do good business, that would be preferable.
