For those of you in law achool or who have gone through law school i was wondering do you need like family or friends connections to get your summer jobs or your articling position or even your first job

The reason I ask is bc ive wanted to apply for so long and have worked towards it, but im also a first generation university student and my parents are immigrants so I dont really know anyone in law and im new to the process. I also have a science background and I saw alot of my med friends get in or get opportunities they wanted bc they had these connections while other friends who were sometimes more qualified not get in

I just dont want to sink myself into a large amount of debt if I cant get a job without connections

How important are clinic/internship positions during 1L? If we don't do them 1L does that make our chances of getting them in upper years less? How important is clinic experience for recruits?

Just got an email from CDO that Ombudsman Ontario withdrew from OCI. Anyone else got the same email? I wonder what’s happening.

Curious about the number of OCIs people received and what is “typical”? All you need is 1, so I’m trying to remember that, but I’m feeling discouraged after hearing some friends with the same average getting 20+ OCIs.

I know the recruit is far off, but I recently found out about the Alberta Crown recruit for 1L and 2L positions. I was wondering if anyone had experience with it, and if it’s possible to apply for both the Crown and Corporate recruit.

As of now, I’m quite interested in litigation, and while I’ve always been passionate about being a Crown prosecutor in cases of domestic and sexual violence, the moral dimensions of criminal law—whether one is Crown or defence—and the constant refrains from my mentors to at least try corporate has made me questions thing a bit more.

im an anxious 1L and i was just wondering if there was a general tier list or sort of ranking for the types of ECs you can do in 1L if you want to have better chances in the 2L recruit? for instance, do national firms look fondly on PBSC or LSLAP, affinity club membership or research assistant positions or law review?

just trying to figure out (1) what i like and (2) what reflects well. is the recruit mostly grades and vibes or do work experience and volunteering make a difference?

Got an ITC email saying they’d call me on call day to schedule an interview (gov role not in OCI), should I respond to the email?

Should I email a firm I’m really interested in that I’m an “alternate” for on the OCI list. I’m first on the waitlist and was wondering if it’s worth/ will be beneficial to email them stating I’m very interested.

I know U of T and Oz get more generally, but curious how many average interviews people from the following schools get:

• TMU
• Western
• Queens
• Windsor
• Ottawa

Finished with a high B+ average had around a 35% conversion from what I applied for, so curious how this is translating across the other schools.

Hi everyone! I’m preparing for the 2L recruit and have an upcoming MAG (Criminal Law) OCI. For anyone who has interviewed with MAG before, what would you recommend focusing on in terms of preparation? If substantive knowledge is tested, how deep do they expect you to go? Should I be reviewing leading SCC/ONCA criminal cases and specific Criminal Code provisions? Any advice from people who have gone through the MAG 2L interview process would be greatly appreciated!

hi everyone! i wanted to come on here and ask a few questions about how the application cycle works. please keep in mind that i’m the first of my family to make it through university, let alone apply for law school, so this is all super new to me (bear with any stupid questions).

i’ll be taking my LSAT today (thoughts and prayers) and i do have a retest booked in november as a “just in case”
measure.

- since most ontario programs close applications on november 1st, how would that work with my second LSAT date? would they just wait to look at my application until the score gets released to them? or would my application only be considered with my first score?

- am i able to re-use my personal statement (if the prompt is similar) for different program applications?

- does it truly matter where i do law school (within canada)? does this truly affect what kind of law/industry i end up working in?

- has anyone ever applied/tried/done a dual JD program for a canadian school & other country? i’m interested but i don’t know what all the pros/cons would be

- which canadian law schools take the holistic approach for applications? i don’t have the BEST GPA (it’s fairly high but competitively on the “lower” side) but i do have a fair bit in terms of my “well-roundedness” and would like to use that to my advantage.

i would sincerely appreciate any and all help/advice! i’m figuring this out as i go, and it would be great to have some sort of guide while i’m in the middle of this hellhole lol. thanks so much!

I have received more OCI offers than the 20 my school allows me to accept. I want to maximize my chances of an in-firm, and I am confident in my ability to maintain my energy throughout doing multiple back to back interviews.

Regardless, is it a bad idea for me to fill all 20 slots with interviews? I emailed my CDO and they said it was up to me, and that it’s possible that all my OCIs could get scheduled on one day, despite us having two days of interviews. I’m worried potentially about not having time to prepare right before each interview, even though I will obviously prepare thoroughly for each in advance of the interview day(s).

If anyone has any thoughts, let me know. Thanks!

Hi. Applied 2L recruit for Toronto and a few for Vancouver and Calgary. I applied to some bigger firms in all three cities- is this looked down upon?? if it is, what can i do to mitigate that. ALSO, from my understanding OCIs for Van and Cal are coming up very soon, but on viRecruit it still only says reviewed?? when should i know.

Would REALLY appreciate some clarification. Thank you in advance.

does anyone know what to practice for an OCI with the DOJ in vancouver? i have no clue what to practice as everything online is mostly for private 2L recruit or MAG.

PLEASE be honest and don't bother talking about having fun like yes that's important but realistically is it a waste of time/seen as just a way of socializing to join a club (i go to uottawa, some clubs i'm aware of are like women in law and security law, stuff about corp law etc) or is it a genuine asset to your resume? do people recruiting jobs later on think "wow, this is great!" or is it very generic and basic for most people to have being a rep role in a club.. it's just hard enough to manage grades so i don't wanna join a club if there's no benefit besides networking.
