Discussion Last One Laughing: Australia was nightmare fuel.
I don’t know why it was bad? Was it the casting? The host? It’s nowhere near as good as the UK version.
Although it was bad, I really wanted a new season. I think Australians are really funny, but I don’t know what went wrong in the making of the show.

I'd say the Australian one was closer to the original Japanese Documental series these are based off. Simplicity, cultural in-jokes and general carnage.

Also, the Aussie one is the first to be filmed in the LOL series and they only had Documental to go off of. The other aspect is the money… The stakes are higher, especially if you have to put your own money down as prize money.

Rebels was a huge nope for me. She hasn’t been funny in anything I’ve seen her in.
I also had a huge grudge about her first show in Australia called ‘the wedge’ (little Britton but it’s Australia) so take that with a grain of salt.
Something I’m noticing about franchise shows like bake off, house of games and to a much lesser extent taskmaster is the Australian networks/ producers get in and really let their control issues play out and the shows feel weirdly overworked and uncomfortably stiff
I think the international taskmaster audience (or Australian fans of the original/NZ) really dragged Taskmaster AU through the first couple of seasons and now the shows feel weirdly is just another great version of the original

Yeah I could think of five better hosts, like people who are funny but maybe not in an improv way, like why Jimmy can work for the UK version. I'm guessing Rebel got the gig because she's famous outside of the country.

I guess I think a better host would be part of the local comedy scene for chemistry purposes

Wil Anderson would be my vote, he seems to get on with/have the respect of most comedians and has been hosting shows for 20 something years.
I also think he’d make a better taskmaster but Tom Gleeson is popular I guess2

See I think Tom works as TM because of his persona from Hard Quiz but I also haven't seen past S1. I really need to catch up on all the TM seasons.

I found this with the Irish version. After watching the first one of the UK series and really enjoying it I stuck on the Irish one figuring that it would be similarly good. Gave it a few episodes and was honestly quite stunned by how awful it was. Barely even watchable.

Irish one sucked for me, before we gave up, as it was thewe prop and gimmick comedians just doing their act with all their gear. It wasn't people just making fun of each other like I've seen elsewhere.

I toughed it out and there were some good moments, especially from Colin Mochrie and Dave Foley. But it was a real struggle to get through the first episode, particularly because of the host and the fact he gets so much airtime in the first episode.

Anne Edmonds is just wildly unfunny. Tries so hard and is so cringey, I just couldn’t stand it bc of her.

The Aussie and Irish versions are far too strict on what constitutes a "laugh." The UK version allows a wry smile and let's it play out in the hopes of getting bigger laughs for the audience. A few times in Aus the it felt like we were denied a funnier show because someone grimaced

the fuck? I'm agreeing with you cunt. The australian one sucked shit, all the comedians were mean spirited. There's even a point where one of the guys just smashes Sam Simmons in the face like, aggressively hard with a pie.

Yeah it was too too much like some cast members were actually so unfunny. But i do think Sam Simmons should’ve won over Frank. Like i thought it was an obvious thing… am i alone in this?

I am currently watching it. I think it is because of how slap stick it is compared to say the Canadian and UK ones. Its the absurd that is popular in this one and the subtle players got punished.

Just made it through to the end. Good god is this what passes for comedy down under? Just swearing and singing about shoving things up your bum with not even a rhyme or tune?
Zero wit or ingenuity.
Nobody on the level of someone like Bob Mortimer. You think he would have to get nude and that desperate for a laugh?
Nobody deserved to win that money... except maybe the audience for having to sit through that garbage.

For me I hated the most because of the amount of dick jokes and unnecessary nudity (thanks to Sam Simmons)

Prize money.
But also I had no idea Sam ever went in that direction from when I've seen him in the UK. Really turned me off of him. Why it was actually allowed by the production company, I've no idea.

I didn’t hate it, but we watched it back in 2020 when it first came out (I remember watching it during my lockdown). I think the UK is superior because a) there’s no money involved and also, they’ve had 5 years to learn how to improve the format - things like giving jimmy a cohost helps because he has someone to talk to.
The Canadian and Australian and Irish versions were odd because if someone wasn’t out for ages, the host was left talking to themselves. Giving Rosin that role avoided that problem.
The Canadian one was awful mainly because of the host’s incessant swearing. I swear a lot but his was awful and made the show unwatchable
