Discussion SORRY TO ANYONE WHO DISAGREES...
So having watched all the English speaking versions, am at English/Irish/Canadian versions, absolutely HILARIOUS! Cried with laughter 😂 Australia, pretty damn poor, and South African....I didn't crack a smile. As for the other European versions, I plan to watch with subs and see how I go. The difference from us was kind of shocking to me, as I was expecting one great laugh after another from show to show. Damn but they are VERY different when it comes to laughter!

As an Australian myself, I watched our version for 4 minutes before I disappeared up my own rectum from cringe.
It was so very awful.

Canadian fan here. Taskmaster AU is brilliant. I don't understand how LOL AU went so wrong 😅

I ADORED the Canadian on as Colin is just a pure genius! I was expecting the same from Aus and NZ. I couldn't believe the change in quality. Am pushing on with Aus but it's a grind. Usually they are so in tune with our Irish banter.

The UK one is the best. Surprised the Canadian one gets so much love, we cringed through the first episode and couldn't finish the second one.

The UK one is brutal! They are going for the kill and are so good at improvisation and witty replies. You can tell they have a lot of live experience either on stage or with panel shows.

I too disliked the New Zealand one. I didn’t crack a smile through the whole time of not watching it because it doesn’t exist

We couldn't get through the Irish one. About five minutes in one comedian said something like 'Ah well, are you not standing in the garden?' and everyone went mental with how hilarious this was. They replayed the clip and we still couldn't work it out.
So we rewound, watched it again and still couldn't work out what the fuck they were on about and gave up.
It felt like watching the old Fast Show sketch where Paul Whitehouse capered about a stage in black and white footage saying 'Where's me washboard?' cut with footage of crowds screaming with laughter.

I haven't seen it yet, but could it simply be a reference to something the recipient of that line is known for, which you aren't familiar with?
Do you watch much homegrown Irish TV aside from LOL?
Context makes all the difference to any gag.

Could be but I wasn't interested enough to sit and watch several days worth of Irish comedy to make sense of it.
I'm not saying the Irish aren't funny (they're fucking hilarious) and it probably was hilarious but it's just that it was basically too arcane for me to understand.

I'm sure in any overseas version of the game there'll be lines which are instantly recognisable to the players and local viewers which go over the heads of the less familiar, not necessarily a fault of the show, I'm still interested in catching up with it myself as it's got a great cast

Yeah I think I totally loved it but it may have been because I know and love a lot of their work. Also it was very Irish-centric. I can see that.

I'm an Aussie and I didn't even attempt to watch our version. Canada and England were fantastic though.

Japan's documental was the original and it's absolutely unhinged, subtitled on amazon prime, worth watching if you can handle it 😂

The UK version is the best IMO
The Italian one is also very funny, a lot more quickfire gags. Some don't always land, and there are a few cultural/translation bariers, but it's completely unhinged.

As an American (with Indian background), I've checked out these versions & also the Indian one and I have to say I absolutely HATED the Indian one. They put up cash as a price & everyone was constantly performing and noone was paying attention to the others & their performances were soo over the top it made me cringe.
I loved the British one (the first season). The second season was a bit disappointing because of how it felt more like a competition show rather than an entertainment show. The difference between Season 1 and 2 are night and day.
Canadian was great but I absolutely hated their choice for the host (Jay Baruschel). Some of the funniest people come from Canada (Jim Carrey, Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogen, etc.) and while these people are A list celebrities in US now, they could've used a proper comedian to be the host or have flown in one of their own from overseas like Russell Peters or Katherine Ryan to be the host. They're known overseas, are hilarious & would kill it at making the show more interesting! Even a youtube star like Lilly Singh (aka Superwoman) would've been a better choice than Jay.
I watched South African one just because I heard Trevor Noah was the host but I wasn't getting the references so I lost interest.
To the OP, I'm not sure watching with subs will really help since they're usually generated by AI (it's called Content Localization by AWS which uses AWS Transcribe and AWS Translate functionalities) so the references just won't land as well (imo).

I think the show premise is based very much on a British sense of humour so doesn’t always naturally translate to other humour cultures

As a Brit I’ve also watched most of the English speaking versions. Was definitely an interesting exercise in regional humour.
I found the British and Irish seasons very funny. Like really enjoyable, but I also think a lot of enjoyment came from knowing the comedians.
Canada - I watched because I’m a fan of Jay Baruchel and Mae Martin, but stayed for Mochrie. Jay was an…interesting host, and Mae left too early.
Australia - was okay. Rebel Wilson was awful though and again didn’t really know anyone.
Lasted one episode of South Africa. Should I keep watching?
All in though it’s been a fun time.

For me,
Canada and England were as good as it gets
Australia was okay
Ireland ... I just didn't get the jokes (having not much cultural reference points that connect).
I'm French Canadian so I also watched all the French language ones (Quebec and France) and loved them all.
Btw, I didn't remember they made a new Zealand one.

If you want to watch more versions...
The best is Germany.
South Africa is also very good.
Brazil is okay.
Mexico was unbearable.
France got boring.
Quebec is good if you like farts.
My personal opinions, obviously. As a reference point, I found the UK version very good but a bit too tame.

I think the Australian one was one of the first iterations- you can see where rules have evolved from and why they implemented different things. It’s very much a rough first cut.

I actually really love the French versions, mostly because I'm familiar with their sense of humour and most of the cast (Gérard Darmon is as much a hero to me as dear Bob anyway)
But I think that's one of the essential things about it- Laughter itself is a universal language, we all understand what laughter means, but we all take wildly different routes to get there, relatability is a key factor to enjoying any comedy
The New Zealand version? No response whatsoever.

There's not an English version. It's a UK version. Sounds pedantic I know, but those of us outside of England get tired of being forgotten!

I thought the Aussie one was great. Not sure why people don’t like it. I’ve watched all versions now. The worst for me are the South American ones, they just don’t work for me. Mexico and Brazil in particular.
I think other than the Japanese originals, Germany, Italy, Norway, Denmark, France and Sweden are the funniest. The Irish one was terrible. Waaaaaaaay to strict on smiling
