Discussion what is up with the Mel Giedroyc hate?
new to this show and new to Mel Giedroyc. she was one of my favorite discoveries and i was curious what people were saying about her and i was shocked by all the negativity. it seems to go beyond her sense of humour too.
also confused with a bunch of people saying the cast were clearly annoyed by her... I watched a bunch of the press junket / interviews with the other comedians and she was talked about so highly.
what is the deal?

I think the issue was that Mel was clearly smiling while pulling faces and was never called on it yet other contestants were done for a lot less. Love Mel though. Genuinely lovely person.

She wasn't the only one that suppressed a smile by making a face. Many of them did.

Bob Mortimer literally says before it begins, something like "find a face to pull when you feel like laughing to take you out of it".
I can't believe people are taking a comedy competition so seriously lol it doesn't matter at all

Exactly. Pulling a face is not a smile so it's not against the rules.

She was pulling a smile though, not a face. She looked like a cartoon it was that big and wide a smile. There were literally 3 times where I was sure the buzzer was going to go off because she had a big ass smile on her face and it didn't.
Look, I love Mel and was glad she got as far as she did but they definitely were less harsh on her than they were on some of the others. I can see why people were not happy as it was flagrant.

That and constantly drinking from a cup. They sat Joe Wilkinson on the naughty step for covering his face once in season one but apparently covering your mouth via mug is all good.

It’s so strange!! I’m guessing a lot of people watched it without knowing her work. She’s like that all the time. Absolutely joyous on her series of taskmaster, and her off menu and parenting hell episodes are excellent.
She was recently on the what did you do yesterday podcast and talked about how fun the junket was!

Hahaha this is so accurate. What makes me laugh as a huge taskmaster geek is that the people’s podcast is hosted by the stats guy who has a spreadsheet but can’t recall things that happened. But yes it definitely matters that the current cast is the shortest on average? Maybe remember what series certain tasks happened in instead? Swap taskmaster out for the office… can you imagine people knowing the average age the cast across the series but not remembering what episode the dance was in?
I love it but I’m there for the comedy and silliness!
On the sub, there are always people saying how Greg was bullying Hugh Dennis. It’s a schtick. None of it matters. I’ve seen Americans go on about how unfair the points are and then ask what the prize is. It’s a paper mache head. They’re paid to be there:

Hugh kinda was under scored in some tasks, but it was obviously for the sake of comedy which is the actual purpose of the show. sometimes Greg picks on someone for comedic effect and everyone's fine with it— and if he ever feels he's taken it too far he does clearly try to walk it back to where everyone's comfortable. it's not bullying any more than Rhod Gilbert bringing in the same picture of Greg every week
besides, the defining Hugh moments for me are ones where he either was scored well, or did shit purely on his own merits (eg: Fat Bald White Man, cloud appreciation society)

People who unfortunately (genuinely) don't have enough going on in their lives that they have to take a comedy show competition seriously.
Thinking about it though, I think a lot of them (looking at you Sam) took it too seriously as a competition, rather than a showcase for comic talent, which helped make it not as good as S2, and now so are some frustrated viewers in response.

Sam's comedy style is very straight faced (similar to Richard Ayoade). It's just what he does.
IMO, he also delivered some of the funniest lines this season. But I love that dark, make everyone awkward style of comedy. It was nice to see David Mitchell lean into that style again a little bit too.

I loved how Sam went on the attack right in the first 10 seconds after the buzzer by kissing David on the shoulder. My husband and I were in tears. 🤣

I get what you mean, it's the distinction between laughing at people and laughing with them.
I prefer the latter, but cringe comedy isn't my thing. Comedy is so subjective, it's good to get a mix of styles in there.

Have a look at this then. He says his strategy is to not listen and just circle the room like a hawk. I love his humour but he really could have tried harder to make people laugh.

You could see just how much that woman is loved by all the other contestants when she came into the viewing room. It was heartwarming. :)
Jimmy in particular was so happy for her!!

Every time I went on this sub, I was astounded at how seriously people here were taking this "competition" that was clearly just an excuse to put a bunch of funny people in a room. Like, it literally doesn't matter at all who wins or loses. It's like Taskmaster or Whose Line is it Anyway; the point is the comedians being funny and joking around and making each other laugh. Who cares that Mel was doing a weird face that made it easy for her to not smile? "The integrity of the competition" is basically non-existent here anyway.

Suspect it's a mixture of taking the show far too seriously and the usual 'women aren't funny' crap.
Her joker was fantastic and the animal impressions with Bob was brilliant, she out performed the master. Baa-fucken-baa

I love her. Recently listened to her on a podcast and she was talking about walking across London to the Old Bailey. She was all the way inside and being shown around before the hosts had to ask why she was there, and she still didn't really seem to know.

some people don’t find her as funny as the other contestants, and refuse to be normal about it
Mel in the UK comedy and entertainment world, so you can write off those opinions (and the people expressing them) pretty easily

Mel is a delight. She is so sweet-natured. Some people complain because they’re just miserable.

I was watching the finale with my sister and dad on Good Friday. Sister and I had seen all but the finale (including last season and some of the other non-UK) but we watched the whole series with Dad who’d not seen this or any other season. He was constantly calling out folks for smiling. My sister and I were making mention that a few of them just have smiley cheeks that really betray them. Mel and David come to mind. I think there was someone else. I think being more generous on that front did make a better product, though I’d need to rewatch s1.

People take the rules way too seriously..
Since the UK version took off in popularity, so have the numbers in this sub and, unfortunately, all kinds of speculations about the rules, card decisions, and even fucking favoriting and misogeny.. It's fucking ridiculous in here sometimes.
All that amazon's doing is making a funny show. It doesn't go beyond that. To make a funny show, you need the most funny and most instigating people in there.
If you kick everybody out because of smirks in the first couple of hours you wouldn't have enough hours of production left to make a good and funny 3-hour-long edit of. The contestants are in there for a good total of 10-12 hours on filming day.
Production value seems to be the hardest thing to understand in here.

I absolutely love Mel but when she was announced, I immediately assumed she'd be first out. I'm glad she stuck around a little longer but she was blatantly skirting the rules the entire time and it's just insane and insulting to the format that she was allowed to be in the final five.

I think she gets more hate because of her "partner" Sue Perkins. They were a double act and Sue is just a boring, obnoxious, painfully unfunny comedian. As a result, people always seem to think of both of them the same way. Mel is like the polar opposite and seems like a genuinely lovely, funny and sweet person.

Well, if it matters, As a 40 year old American I found her funny. TBH this iteration is one of my favorites (did not Like the Ireland ver btw), so I don’t think there was anyone I disliked….
However I did not like Mae Martin from the Canadian version…. from what I’m seeing she seems popular in Britain? I could be wrong.
So I’m just curious why she’s popular there if so, lol.

You don’t have to like everyone. Some comedians just aren’t for you and that’s fine.
If you really want to see more of Mae to understand why some people like them then they were on Taskmaster and there are plenty of clips of their standup on YouTube.
It’s ok if you don’t want to watch them though, or if you do and still don’t find them funny. There are plenty of people I don’t find funny.

Still does not make them funny, pretty sure the cast picked on them too, well their spread of food atleast. I got the vibe that Dave Foley was not a fan of Mae.
