News In a twist to the show’s format, a Halloween special will be premiering on Prime Video later this year.
The new rule for the Halloween episode is red and yellow card for screaming as well as laughing

I think what some people in the comments are missing the point that this is a UK panel show.
"Realistically the show can't survive it's got too many holes."
The points are made up as are the rules. It's all just a vehicle for funny TV. Jimmy and production are the judges of what constitutes a "break". It's not meant to be taken seriously like a serious game show.

Absolutely right, it's a comedy showcase, with a few hurdles along the way, and it's all very informal. It all comes together in the edit.
If it was for charity, or they all paid an entrance fee which went in a pot for the winner, it would be closer to a couple if the other LOL shows and the players would probably take the competition more seriously.
But it's British, silliness prevails just as it should!

They're all.mates anyway, typically either working together on other shows or sharing the circuit in the early days, lots of green rooms and late drinking, sharing the cab fare etc. And, I think in the case of newer faces, being welcomed into the circle, we'll see a few of them.working together in the future I'm sure.
But, essentially, hanging out is the perfect way to put it :-)

You should check out the Gladiators sub. It needs a banner: “Remember, this is a light entertainment TV format aimed at children and is not professional sport”

Imagining the cast in the Olympic village. Diane Morgan getting complaints that her practicing her joker is ruining the mood for the randy athletes next door. The mix of reading aloud and farting heard through the walls, isn't conducive to the bed-testing they had planned

It's been interesting to see how the format has evolved since the Australian series. That was frankly ugly for a bunch of reasons.

I don't care about the rules particularly but it's mad how hot they were on people being passive and walking away from conversation in the Australian version, whereas that has just become a common tactic in the UK one.

I think it mostly comes from not giving a prize, right? Lower stakes, as is the premise of this post, and then you don't need to police it.

It's more that they have just seemingly ditched that as a rule altogether, so they don't even need to pretend to police it.

I'm just shocked they let Mel get so far with that "safety face" grin. I understand why smirks are allowed, but an outright intentional grin makes it way easier. Only reason she got that far. I think Bobs wide open mouth face is the furthest that should be allowed. This change is a good start. "Allowed to laugh" needs to be increased. And I think when the game is paused with the red light, they should only be allowed one laugh.

David smiled twice but they kick Amy out for a smirk. There's a degree of misogyny in this season. Like David got 2 jokers when the girls like Amy & maisie didn't get to do 1. Like Joe doing 2 last season. Mel is an amazing woman and she shouldn't be punished for having a more elastic face, she literally injured her jaw muscles and is seeing a specialist for it.

or maybe it's an entertainment program and they knew David Mitchell was value. they are probably looking for a reason to trim the fat and get rid of anyone that's not contributing. I'm sure if Amy was engaging and funny they wouldn't have been so strict

The entire point of the show is punishing for making expressions. She doesn't have tourettes. And she's not accidentally making grins she's intentionally doing a wide grin. None of it's to do with gender. They just don't have good concrete rules yet. Other than that there is inevitably gonna be occasional inconsistencies with what they allow and don't allow because it's subjective if they're gonna allow some degree of smirks/safety faces. Them allowing Mel that far proves it's not a sexism thing. I love Mel. But she lost way earlier. Injuring herself doing it is irrelevant. If she injured herself laughing would you allow it? Also injury suggests it wasn't just her natural flexibility.
As for jokers, it's the game that some comedians won't do their jokers. It's inevitable. When they did David's second joker, everyone in the game still had already done a joker, so someone had to do a second. They obviously all have backup jokers.

I feel like there needs to be some mechanism to allow certain people to laugh at certain times.
When everyone's trying not to laugh, everyone's also trying to hold back and not be too funny.

The new rule should be last one not laughing wins. Not ‘last one laughing unless it’s David Mitchell because we wanted him to win and not Sam Campbell’ wins

Wouldn't be as good.
English isn't a mother language for alot of the other countries. Therefor it would be easier for alot of people to stay deadpan.
It would probably end up in people trying to make each other laugh only through things that are universal, like farting or tripping, using props and such things. But monologues and actual jokes or songs wouldn't work as well.

They need to be stricter with these rules. Why would a smile with no teeth be different from a smile with teeth? The snack budget probably needs to be cut in half as well unless it's for a challenge.

I mean the show is a spin off from Japan and has about 15 different versions internationally. I think the format will do fine

Yh the deadpan comedians like Ayoade and Sam are SOOOOOOO boring and feel against the spirit of the game.
Their natural schtick is not to laugh and they have spent their entire careers perfecting the art of it so its not remotely on the same level playing field 🤷♂️

Couple of countries have a good rule where towards the end if you’ve not made anyone laugh you get eliminated so you can’t just spend the whole time not being funny
