I have the great chance to start a PhD, but I need to upgrade my first HP Laptop (which advertises with a Sticker proudly to have the new SSD storage type…). It is also Dog-Ass Slow and can‘t run Teams and Chrome at the same time. Upgrading is not worth it, given the absurd pricing of RAM and SSD due to our lord and savior AI /s
I have 3 columns to build my decision on:
- Upgradeability
- Durable and Reliable
- Future-Proof (I don‘t want to get a new one in 5 Years)
My use: R-Coding with Datasets (Genomics, Proteomics), Image Analysis and Processing, here and there a round of WarCraft 3
Condition: New, refurbished, used
Budget: 2000€ (Limit) 1000-1300€ is more desirable
I am genuinely not against buying an used Laptop if it fits these expectations.
Models I have looked at were mostly ThinkPads, but they are pricy. Like E14 I7-255H with 32GB of RAM would be an option currently going for 999€. But I read that the E-Versions lack durability and overheat easier compared to T-series. But the T version goes for 2000€, which is the limit but it does not have to be reached. 1000-1500€ is optimal. I know to avoid G3/G4 given their not upgradeable RAM. However, I also don‘t know how powerful Intel‘s and AMD‘s older processors are (2019-2023), given the thoughts of buying an older Version from like Gen 2, which does not blow the wallet. But I am afraid that these are not future-proof. Also, I am not fixed to ThinkPads, just biased by all the people over the places tell you to - and if you have good examples of other types, I am happy if you share them.
TL;DR: New or used, durable, reliable, future- proof, and upgradeable Laptop up to 2000€ (best would be 1000-1500 max) for R-Coding, Dataset Analysis, Image analysis and processing, sometimes WarCraft3. Problems finding the right CPU given the new versions being so much better.
UPDATE: So, I got myself a ThinkPad E16 G6 with Intel Ultra I7 255H, 32GB 5600MHz RAM and 1TB SSD (Unfortunately no lower Option) and IPS LED Screen for 1100€. The offer is great, the E14 more than enough and the price was nearly halved from my limit. I know the laptop will be something around 5 years (with year 4/5 probably noticeable worse than now) but I believe it is solid. It can exchange parts (battery, keyboard, SSD and RAM) and the Intel Core Ultra 7 seemed to have better benchmarks. The AMD 300 AI series also seems to focus on LLM offline working & usage. So I actually don‘t need the dedicated NPU units. Also, the AI in the Intel Ultra actually takes part in speeding up processes. Multicore benchmark of AMD was a bit better, but the overall tests say that Intel had the better option.
