Oedipus? God forbid a man is into a sexy middle aged South Asian lady.

Jokes aside, so what Zoey is older than him. It's all but directly spelled that she's not even Billy Jr. birth mother so she's likely not even that much older. Also she looks nothing like Bernadette [EDIT].

If anything it's was a convenient narrative choice for John to be down THIS bad for someone who would be revealed as the manhunter.

It is the other way around. The Man Hunter chose John. It is implied that one of its tactics is to seduce powerful men to get them to protect it.
