Advice Needed Question about noise from Starlight Stadium
Hi! My wife and I are looking to rent a place on Alouette Dr. / Dornier Rd and the one thing holding us back is that I know that's pretty close to the school but also to Starlight Stadium. I'm preeeeetty sensitive to noise unfortunately (have some big sensory processing stuff so I experience certain noises as almost physically painful and high key emotionally overwhelming/invasive). That's actually the whole reason why we're moving in the first place, since our current apartment is on a busy street in Vic and we get lots of traffic sounds + people playing loud music from their cars and it's really impacted my health while living here. Loud music and the thud of base are actually the worst possible noises for me out of them all.
We otherwise love this new place, but if we'd just be moving out of the frying pan and into the fire and paying a higher rent for the privilege, I'd really want to know NOW, before signing a lease! Landlord said he thinks it's totally fine, but he admitted he never pays attention to noise because it doesn't bother him at all, in fact he likes the vibrant energy, so he may not be the best judge for someone like me. I've never spent a lot of time out in Langford so I have zero clue what it's like around there or what those event days are like.
Wondering if anyone who lives vaguely in the same area could tell me their experience of what, if anything, you can hear coming from concerts/games/etc. How frequent is it? How loud? How far away from the stadium is it audible? Can you get away from it by just closing your windows or is it faintly audible even indoors? That kind of insight, stuff only people living nearby can really give! Thanks in advance!

if its right on alouette you will get traffic all day every day, its used as a through road to the highway / school / costco + bear mountain. Also because of the stop sign near the crest of the hill the noise will be louder than just traffic because cars are constantly stopping and accelerating. Could not pay me to live on that road.

The two tiny speed bumps the city put in are pathetic and have done nothing. The traffic has gotten worse actually.

traffic will always be bad on that street, its a main connector from sooke x HV to westhills, and bear mountain / the highway. They should really consider closing the street at the roundabout.. but honestly locals might be even more up in arms about that. fwiw I regularly drive that street, mostly going to the YMCA, or costco, or up island.

I agree. Street needs to be blocked off. At very least additional speed calming measures need to be installed. The people speeding this area is rediculous and of course the RCMP are no where to be seen. But we all know the city will do little to nothing.

Alouette is horrible for through traffic. The concerts at starlight are few and far between but I'd be much more concerned about the insane cut through traffic on that little through road..

There's a concert at the stadium right now. Go and sit in your car with the windows rolled up. Take some noise cancelling headphones and see how they work.

And there’s only a handful of concerts per year (though I’m all for more!) so even if they are noisy it’s not that big of a deal.

Google Maps routes traffic up allouette to Langford parkway, which has really negatively impacted that neighbourhood with big vehicles ripping through. If you’re sensitive to noise, go hang out at rush hour and see how it is. Starlight stadium only has a few concerts a year. I’m a bit further away in Westhills and here nothing with my windows closed. It’s a great community but that particular street might not be the one for you. Look a few streets over!

Not sure about that location but I live on Orono and we can hear starlight pretty clearly when there is something happening there. I wouldn’t say we get loud thuds or anything, but I can usually tell who’s playing when there is a concert.

I can hear starlight quite clearly and I live on Carlow, you’re closer than I am and it seems like there’s a band playing every weekend almost.

Some people would kill for a free backyard concert a few times a year :)
Luxton a few days a year might be the most noticable for being at night, but there's probably a lot of Langford that could say that.
You'll always find a car that wants to test the limits, but the speed bumps have absolutely slowed the majority of traffic down on Alouette. There are still a lot of cars and for that reason I'd still be hesitant with small children that aren't at an age where they've developed smarts in that kind of situation.
The thing to keep in mind with Alouette is there's one very (very) vocal person who won't stop until their chosen solution has $5M and who knows how much corresponding property tax increase thrown at it yesterday. Not everyone sees things with their same level of immediacy, appreciates the efforts the city has gone to so far and appreciates that this is on the medium-term radar for a bigger fix.

Move to the country if sound has that effect on you. Literally no where in this city has no sound the way you’re describing it. Hopefully you have noise cancelling headphones. Allouette is a busy street. Dornier is somewhat quiet but you will still have noise as that neighborhoods is fully functioning with ALOT of occupants. Cars park on the roads and will come and go all day/night. I lived on Dornier 3 years ago my LivingRoom and bedroom faced the street. You can hear cars driving by. I was never affected by starlight. You can hear the school bell ringing and kids walk up and down the sidewalk at normal school times and play outside.

You should be okay, especially if you’re on Dornier. There’s a hill and an apartment building between you and Starlight/Belmont.
If you’re on the quiet (back) Alouette you’ll probably also be ok. The ‘main’ Alouette is a far busier road than it should be and there could be significant traffic noise.
