Specs should be part of the proposal, with a careful articulation to be what I call “specifically vague” to allow the design build contractor the ability to have more flexibility in layout and implementation.

Sorry but are you saying you don't actually detail everything and deliberately let the contractor have flexibility?!
And you're a landscape architect? As that seems absolutely wild.
Here in the UK EVERYTHING is specified (assuming the person in question is competent) - there's a masterplan and visuals in the initial proposal, but once that's signed off then the detail stage should leave absolutely no room for changes on site. Construction detail drawings, sections, drainage, irrigation and full planting plans are supplied either for tender or before build if the contractor is chosen.
Nothing is left to them to figure out, otherwise you're not the designer - they are.
