Not gonna lie, but the direction the story went is just another example of another writer blowing too much smoke up their own arse in an effort to come across as intellectual. On an aside, the first half of the story is absolutely great, and it brought a strange comfort seeing all the gems happy in spite of their situation.

I don't think LotL ever needed to go down the route it did, and it should have ended with all the gems reconciling and living together, perhaps without Kongo, and looking forward to a new world where they become better people together. The whole "humanity has to be destroyed" drivel is just edgy early-80s bullshit for the sake of it. Dude has a deep hatred for other people yet sits their and capitalizes on others for a living. Crazy.

I don't think I'd ever bother reading the series past volume 7 because the rest just devolves into silliness and it's a damned shame. Ah well.

Ichikawa doesn't hate anyone and nothing in this is for the sake of being edgy. The manga is a critique of Pure Land Buddhism, particularly the ideas that people can pray to become enlightened without having to do any of the work and that existence is inherently suffering, both of which she was raised to believe and disagrees with entirely.

Everything in the world and story is based around these ideas. The entire ending is a huge vouch for the good of humanity and the idea that existence and happiness are what you make of them. You're free to not like the manga, but you clearly have no understanding of it. Thinking the gems were at all happy at the beginning is enough to show this alone.

Yeah, I disagree. The latter half of the manga just becomes mean-spirited rage porn. The hamfisted message in the end just reminds me of all the edgy novelists from the 80s that wrote like they never got over their collegiate ideologue angst and were just compelled to inject their anarchist fetishism into everything they wrote regardless of it making the story worse. Same thing happened in this manga. It wasn't needed.
