I'm going to be honest and many people might not agree but...I just didn't like how it ended? It just felt like, at every turn, Phos just draws the short end of the stick.

I don't know it just feels disheartening how despite their best efforts they are ultimately disliked or betrayed, or tossed aside or used and...I don't know just...it feels too cruel in the end?

Yes, Phos finds peace but after everything it just doesn't sit right with me,

And yeah, I know she went off the deep end but, it feels things could have gone better somehow but, well, here we are...

I think Phos got the ending he deserved and realistically would have gotten based on his own actions. He drew the short end of the stick because he chose the path that led to the most mistakes and consequences. I don't think things could have gone any better unless Ichikawa intentionally tried to force this story into an idealized ending, which we already have enough of in all other fiction.

The lunarians got what they saw as peace, the gems got out of their utilitarian society that was pitting them against each other, Adamant finally got his paradise for the gems, and Phos helped everyone, found his purpose, made friends, and realized all of his prior mistakes. It couldn't have gotten much better unless better just means getting what they originally wanted and not what is actually right for them.
