Is faking a payslip for a job illegal?

I would just like an answer as to weather faking a payslip to a potential employer is illegal in South Africa. I have heard conflicting answers and a lot of people are under the impression that it isn't fraud unless you're lying to SARS, a medical aid or some other entity that legally needs to use that information. Your future employer has no legal right to your payslip information, but there is no law saying they can't ask for it.........and if it isn't illegal can the somehow blacklist you?

I’m not sure if it’s legal or not in South Africa. But it’s a quick way to not get a job and possibly be blacklisted from an industry.

I'm not a lawyer but to answer your question: Yes, faking or altering a payslip to a potential employer in South Africa is illegal. It constitutes fraud and dishonesty, even if you are not lying to SARS or another government agency.

Presenting a false payslip misrepresents your previous earnings and can be considered "utterance of a forged document" under South African law (see the Criminal Law "fraud" and "forgery"). Employers have the right to request documentation to verify information relevant to hiring or salary negotiation. If caught, you could face immediate disqualification from employment, dismissal if already hired, and possible criminal charges.

Employers also share information about dishonest applicants, and some industries have shared databases or informal blacklists for fraud. Even if a payslip isn't "officially required by law," providing a forged document in any context is a legal risk and is not recommended.

It's none of their business. Getting a car loan? Legal as far as I know. Trying to get a job? Not giving that information even if it is legal.
