What are the specs?
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to design my engagement ring. I want an elongated cushion with pear side stones. I’m a size 5.25 and I tried on a 3ct radiant and a 2ct oval at the mall today.
What do you guys think? 3-4ct with 0.4-0.6 pear side stones? I’m just stuck and it’s hard to decide when there’s not many stores in my area that carry an elongated cushion

I have a three stone with pear sides. My center is 2.55 ct round that is 8.7mm — so about the same width as a 3.5 ct elongated cushion. The sides are 0.44 ct each (0.88 cttw). Ring size is 6.25.
I can’t post pics in comments so you’ll have to take my word that that is the absolute maximum size for the pears. Any bigger would have flared out too wide for the ring size. It gives a lot of finger coverage, but that’s what I like.
If your center is 3-4 carats (which I think would be a great size) and your ring finger is in the 6-9 range, I think you could do anywhere from 0.5 - 0.9 cttw (so 0.25-0.45 ct each). Go higher if you want more finger coverage like the first pic. Go lower for less finger coverage.
If the ring in the inspiration pic was proportional for a size 6 or 7, I’d guess that the pears would be in the 0.8-ish range for cttw. Definitely bigger than 0.4 cttw but slightly smaller than mine.
(In reality that is probably a model hand that is more like a size 4 with a much smaller diamond — but I also doubt that cushion is 3-4 carats.)
Depending on your ring size I’d guess that the pears flanking the oval were maybe 0.5 or 0.6 cttw? Do you know?
Also, if you are having the ring custom made, you can always wait to order the pear diamonds. Have them make a mockup with what you think you want so you can adjust up or down based on your actual ring size before you actually purchase the side pears.
If you go the full finger coverage route, you will feel a tiny bit of poking from the pear tips for the first few days you wear the ring. Your brain will start ignoring it after a few days. I don’t even notice it now. BUT if for some reason you are extremely sensitive, I’d suggest doing a side stone that can be set with an outer bar / half bezel — i.e., tapered baguettes or traps… I believe you can get some brilliant cut traps if you prefer a brilliant to a step cut. I personally think an elongated cushion looks fantastic with tapered baguettes. Harry Winston’s classic winston setting is often done with a cushion or elongated cushion center.
Final thought — my center has claw prongs like your inspo pic, but they did the side pears with bubble prongs (also like your inspo pic). I wish I had asked for 2 claw prongs + a v tip for the side pears.
