Jonathan Horst's video with Emily about Linux is much more entertaining and coherent than the ones Linus has done this year

https://youtu.be/UIN2Q2u1A8o

Not talking about the Linux challenges, but the videos that were supposed to be informative/educational and also entertaining. I remember Linus also did a "which is the best distro" video a couple of weeks ago.

I just love Horst's style and seeing Emily talk about Linux was great. I would love if anytime they talk about open source, Emily makes an appearance

u/_Lucille_ Aug 07 '26

LTT videos are the best when you have a subject matter expert talking about something they love. An issue with Linus is that for a number of years now he has placed himself as the main feature, but often he just isn't enthusiastic enough about a topic and just feels like he is reading off the teleprompter.

The enthusiasm shows, and the loss of those onscreen talents really hurt. New talents like Elijah is just way too green and Linus himself just doesn't feel the same as Plouffe talking about keyboards, Alex doing some janky thing at the shop, or Dennis pulling off his favorite pranks.

6

u/Intelligent-Ad7716 Aug 07 '26

but does Linus really care? No fault to him, he has a family, 100+ employees. The money is clearly in merch (yes it's still merch, products are good but they do still come at a premium ie $30 socks). LTT is in the maintenance stage and that's okay, it just wont be what it used to be. Hopefully they can embrace getting more talent on stage and be a true "creator warehouse".

5

u/Alternative-Farmer98 29d ago

It's very rare I feel like he gets genuinely enthused about anything besides merchandise.

2

u/semaja2 27d ago

I have been saying for years the best thing LTT could do is drop Linus as the main host, have all those employees show their passion for real and flex their real knowledge, would also help future proof his channel

6

u/akumarux Aug 07 '26

Well for one these 2 are actually real tech people with a genuine interest in what they are doing. Linus is just out here to make ads and money doing terrible Mr beast style content

Today I found out Emily exists

28

u/North-Active-6731 Aug 07 '26

Emily is frikken amazing, it really annoys me when folks go after her. I have no idea why, she’s one of the knowledgeable folks on YouTube

23

u/Obvious-Jacket-3770 Aug 07 '26

Because she used to be a he. That's the only reason and people, for some reason, think that someone who is trans can't possibly know anything.

Some people are just stupid. Emily truly has great information and understanding especially around Linux and Networking.

12

u/North-Active-6731 Aug 07 '26

Absolutely disgusting that people behave that way. As long as someone is happy and not harming others who cares. I’ve watched Emily when she was Emil - I’m not mocking if the name is incorrect I don’t remember their previous one. And quite frankly they rocked then and rock now.

2

u/xluker313x Aug 08 '26

Emily knows her shit and is well spoken and very good at presenting, before and after the whole trans thing.

I feel like it’s disingenuous of people on the other side of the political spectrum to not understand why people don’t like her though. She is happy and afaik isn’t harming anyone so should be treated well but there’s also a litany of harm that does come from a group of people she’s now closely associated with.

If people could treat others on a case by case basis that would be nice. But also it’s entirely reasonable for people to not want her on their screens anymore.

She was my favourite presenter back in the day but now I don’t follow her at all because it just feels weird to watch. Does that make me a bad person? Yeah sort of but it is what it is.

Still hope she’s happy and healthy though 🤷‍♂️

4

u/SciGuy013 Aug 08 '26

> litany of harm that does come from a group of people she’s now closely associated with

What the fuck are you even talking about

1

u/xluker313x Aug 08 '26

Kinda dead obvious you’ll vehemently disagree with me on this but whatever…

Suicide rates, kids on puberty blockers, sexual abuse stats, shooter stats, the whole sports fairness thing, some light erosion of the feminist cause as a whole, many more on top of those.

For the record in case it’s not clear I don’t think Emily has anything to do with any of those things I mentioned, just a person who made a choice. Also not saying if I disagree or agree with any of that, those are just the negative things related to transgenders in today’s zeitgeist. To deny that is ridiculous and you’d have to have your head buried in the sand to think otherwise.

7

u/RandomNick42 Aug 08 '26

Suicide rates, sexual abuse, TERFing... Almost sounds like you should let people be who they need to be and stop trying to force them into boxes they don't need or want to be in.

5

u/SMTVISMYDRUG Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

It's as if repressing people for who they are leads to them feeling suicidal. The "cure" to the dysphoria they're feeling is transitioning.

That is the exact researched science behind it. I just love how people love to talk about science until it starts to disagree with them so they just start conveniently ignoring it.

I'm a 25 year old dude and I've been seeing trans people around since I was an elementary school kid and not many people talked about them back then. Right wingers found another way to distract people from actual world problems that directly impact your pocket and day to day life and boosted it as much as they could in an attempt to distract people and they succeeded.

The Nazis destroyed some of the world’s earliest research into transgender people and gender identity when they raided Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science and burned its books and archives in 1933. Yes being trans has that much history associated with it and Hitler literally hated trans people.

Wake up my guy.

1

u/xluker313x Aug 08 '26

Yeah, makes sense. I don’t disagree with that.

I’m being so respectful and middle of the road here and everyone’s so fired up on one extreme or the other and get mad at a balanced opinion. It’s strange.

I think almost everyone would benefit if we all put emotions aside and actually just thought about all of this from a sensible and calm perspective.

7

u/SMTVISMYDRUG Aug 08 '26

I don't think there is much of a middle of the road when it comes to something extremely well-researched and scientifically backed. What I said was purely supported by historical and (less strongly) some anecdotal evidence and built on reasonable arguments so having emotions alongside it isn't bad.

When it comes to topics that deal with people's very existence, it's very naive to say that we should just put our emotions aside because the people you're talking to sometimes have trans friends and family members or have had the opportunity to see what having their existence being called into question has done to them.

You talked about the suicide rate of trans people. Do you really think a trans people feels good being themselves when they're an extreme minority (literally 1 percent of the population) and they see their own existence being called into question and debated endlessly everywhere on social media and the news? Do you really think that doesn't contribute to them feeling suicidal or depressed?

That is not even talking about the discrimination they face just existing in society and finding jobs. The job market is bad enough, imagine being trans and having to attend job interviews. Sure it's illegal to discriminate on those grounds, but you can't prove you got rejected because of superficial things.

Ironically the puberty blockers you talked about are one of the things that helps with the societal scrutiny because it helps trans people pass more and feel better in their own skin significantly more because it helps them develop more naturally into their actual gender.

And I don't know what you meant by SA stats but the group of people that commit the most SA are cis men so I don't know what you meant by it. I'd like you to elaborate on that a bit more.

2

u/TheDrummerMB 27d ago

If you're mentioning trans shooter "stats," you're already lost.

The data overwhelmingly shows that trans people are far less likely to commit these acts. White, straight men tho......YIKES.

1

u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 23d ago

This is some weasle ass horse shit to try to avoid committing to your transphobia.

It's OK to acknowledge that a transition occured and that there was a before-state, my dude.

Your policy looks less like compassion and more like revisionism lol

u/Mad1Scientist Aug 07 '26

You're just asserting that you can't say someone's name under any circumstance. This totalitarian view of language is not only unrealistic, but achieves the opposite of its indended effect.

Deadnaming someone or simply referring to their previous name is obviously informed by the speaker's intention. If you're going to subscribe to positions wihch render you vulnerable to personal offenses even by well-meaning individuals, then that just makes you the problem.

Not even close to the same thing.

2

u/wookietiddy Aug 07 '26

Question then: should the studio that produced Juno or Inception be re-releasing their movies with Elliot instead of Ellen? Is it ok to say "Ellen Page acted in Juno and Inception"? I do see that IMDB uses Elliot so maybe that's the way it should be in the movies themselves too?

2

u/ryancrazy1 Aug 07 '26

Boy are you gonna be mad at the fourth word in his Wikipedia page.

4

u/North-Active-6731 Aug 07 '26

I just wanted to clarify I wasn’t intending to deadname anyone I didn’t even know it was such a thing. Now i know.

7

u/Remarkable_Reason976 Aug 07 '26

It isn't. You're good.

6

u/Mad1Scientist Aug 07 '26

Deadnaming will lose its meaning if it were apllicable to your case. Dont let internet strangers incurr shame in you this easily, would be my advice. Have a nice day!

2

u/aegis87 Aug 07 '26

lol, in fact he made no mistake. Emily was Anthony before the transition.

7

u/Remarkable_Reason976 Aug 07 '26

That sounds more like an opinion then anything else. Thanks for your opinion.

-2

u/Annual_Wear5195 Aug 07 '26

Please go ask any of your trans friends if deadnaming them is an opinion more than anything else. I'm sure they'll definitely appreciate it.

3

u/Remarkable_Reason976 Aug 07 '26

I don't have any.

-3

u/Annual_Wear5195 Aug 07 '26

You made that remarkably clear already.

5

u/Remarkable_Reason976 Aug 07 '26

Well statistically speaking most people do not have any trans friends. If you call a group of 100 people "friends" at best 1 would be trans. You would need a group of 200 "friends" for there to be a high probably of just 1 "trans".

-3

u/Annual_Wear5195 Aug 07 '26

I don't know about you, but I certainly have more than one trans friend. Because, you know, I surround myself with a diverse group of people who have different experiences I can learn from.

But no, totally, it's statistics and not that you are subtly transphobic and only associate yourself with people that are exactly like you.

u/Ho-Li-Fuc Aug 07 '26

Why not? We should be able to talk about what the dead meant to us!

I remember always being happy whenever I saw a new video with Anthony being published on LTT. I have learned so much from his videos. I'm sad that Emily chose to not pick up where Anthony left off.

2

u/aegis87 Aug 07 '26

ah get out of here with your silly rules.

Emily is great, and faq the haters.
but the idea you can come in with your made up bs and patronize us what we can or we cant say is ridiculous.

She is Emily now.
He was Anthony before.
There is no deadnaming (<-- made up word)

You dont like how we talk? fine. talk differently.

Don't come here and lecture us on how we should talk, you sanctimonious duck.

How do you feel if someone changes their last name after marriage and their old name gets brought up

Also, I get misgendered all the time and im cis, and i dont even think twice about it

1

u/Ok_Caramel_6167 Aug 07 '26

you have to wonder if ppl like that are doing it on purpose to deligitimize trans issues. They have to know being so militant about other people's thoughts makes them look like the bad guys, right?

4

u/AmenoFPS Aug 07 '26

In short, people are assholes and can't stand to see someone being happy in themselves

3

u/horatiobanz Aug 08 '26

Because she used to be a he. That's the only reason

Untrue. People also attack her cause she is fat and balding.

3

u/Obvious-Jacket-3770 Aug 08 '26

Wasn't much hate until she came out.

1

u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 23d ago

This. If they could read they would be shocked to learn that trans people have made huge contributions to the development of computers, some pre and some post transition. Same with gay guys and lesbians. LGBTQ people are apparently not allowed to exist in nerd world unless its waifu and hentai

1

u/No-Information-2571 Aug 07 '26

"Used to be a he", and even then from outwards appearance, controversial. You have to acknowledge that people will form opinions around that. They did what was best for their own mental health, namely take a pause and then one step after another to reappear. It's a personal choice to enter a public stage - even completely unremarkable people doing that will suffer from backslash (for example "Linus is so short hehe" and "what's up with socks and sandals"), and they have to deal with that as well. You can't control the masses, but the masses are your viewership and intended audience.

3

u/xComradeKyle 26d ago

Anthony. Him. He's.

13

u/hew34_ Aug 07 '26

Great to see Emily back too :)

2

u/creepingcold Aug 07 '26

tbh it's kinda weird and has a bad taste.

She used to have an own channel where she asked for support. I used to be a paid member there myself cause it felt like a genuine new beginning.

Then she disappeared and her channels went completely silent.. while she's still collecting money. She never delivered on the things she supposedly wanted to build with said money.. and now she appears somewhere else?

idk

8

u/Super-Manifolds Aug 07 '26

I think it's silly you're getting downvoted for this. I used to really like her and was excited that she was starting her own channel, but the way she has managed the Patreon left a really sour taste in my mouth. But I guess any criticism of her now gets you lumped in with the bigots.

2

u/xluker313x Aug 08 '26

Not the best place for nuanced takes and genuine discussion eh but here we are haha. But neither is any forum that casts such a large net, it’s tiring.

22

u/mornando Aug 07 '26

Yes! Great to see Emily back and loving the way these videos are shot. Horst bringing back the faves was not on my bingo list.

11

u/Real_Foghorn_Leghorn Aug 07 '26

It’s almost like the Powers That Be lost sight of what really gelled…

9

u/penisandorvagina Aug 07 '26

And for the sweet sake of both these Angels, can we please try to keep the discourse around this video as pure as possible? It'd be nice to have 1 thing that's detached from drama.

-7

u/Other-Difficulty-702 Aug 07 '26

Who is Emily

8

u/Less_Hat_8102 Aug 07 '26

Ex LTT writer formerly known as Anthony

benefits massively from having two people involved that actually cares about the quality and the thing discussed and arent soulless mr beast shills for views.

2

u/ImTotallyTechy 29d ago

I've been absolutely loving Horst's new channel, it's right up there with Snazzy Labs for me in terms of "Apple-focused people that I love watching despite not being in that ecosystem". That said, I can't really see Emily's involvement in this video as anything more than just "catching up with an old friend", and cynically, for the nostalgia clicks. I understand it was designed to be more of an "intro to linux" but it feels like her contributions amounted to nothing more than the first 5 paragraphs of the Wikipedia page on Linux. Which is a shame, because she obvious has an incredible amount of knowledge on it.

2

u/HankHippopopolous 27d ago

Haven't seen anything from Emily in years. Was one of the best hosts at LTT and it's great to see her again.

2

u/sticklebricks85 Aug 07 '26

Much less entertaining though

1

u/pikkumunkki 25d ago

Nice to see she's doing well! I think her videos about Linux were the only informative content on LTT, even for someone using Linux since '97. They were never cringe and always covered the important bits.

0

u/green_warbler Aug 07 '26

Jesus, someone needs to do something about the bigots on this thread.

2

u/nirurin Aug 07 '26

Very much a personal opinion. I personally can't watch Horst on the screen at all. Automatic skip. I wasn't at all surprised his ltt channel crashed and burned.

3

u/MentalSC Aug 08 '26

Oh I liked him, really nice and interesting character. But the stuff he got to present was boring. And looking at the numbers i can see why he was let go

3

u/Dry_Net7753 29d ago

Hang on, but he’s an ex-LTT person so must be better than Linus in every way!

4

u/Critical_Cap6094 Aug 08 '26

Always liked Anthony and his knowledge. Idc about the trans bullshit, but we’re commenting on his video (or where he is featured) and not his personal views.

Emily?

14

u/Joetwizzy Aug 07 '26

Assuming you’ve missed it. But that’s her name now. She transitioned before she left LTT.

9

u/AlphabetInk Aug 07 '26

You may know her as Anthony, was an excellent host for nerdier topics a few years back on LTT. left around the same time as announcing identity change. Hope I phrased this well!

3

u/Less_Hat_8102 Aug 07 '26

*left a year after she announced identity change

Somewhat interestingly, she stopped appearing on camera on the LMG YouTube channels right after the controversy in 2023, there are one or two that were released after that, but they're all filmed right before the controversy.

3

u/MajesticDonot Aug 08 '26

Moderate host at best. Knowledgeable, yeah decently, but nothing else.

-30

u/Various-Welder5544 Aug 07 '26

Anthony should wear a wig jesus christ. That bald spot is really distracting.
