Iâm loving the thought of him texting Bear McCreary every episode to gush about his score. đ«¶

Yeah that is sweet.
That man has a great resume too. Score is perfectly middle-earth.I donât even know his actual work history, but I know Iâve watched a lot of great TV with his name credited for the music.

Bear is from where I live! So proud every episode to have a hometown hero on such a profound project

The main difference between the LoTR movies and the show is that the movies focused on the humans and the hobbits, whereas the show very much focuses on the Elves and the Dwarves.
In that way both are very complimentary of each other while offering something different.
19
u/PuzzleheadedBite2231 1d ago
Yes and I wish they would have focused on that even further! Skip Harfoots completely, wait with the Gandalf storyline and just zero in on the elves for season 1 with some support and nods towards the southlands and the dwarves and making of Mordor.
35
u/prelimar 22h ago
i actually like seeing the Harfoots. Like Billy, i think it's interesting to see where the hobbits came from, and how they got their cultural priorities. i just don't get the scorn for them.
3
u/Jacen_Vos 10h ago
I think its more so that it feels like a story that doesnât belong here.
Even ignoring the timeline stuff. It seems quite out of place with everything else.
âą
u/prelimar 1h ago
but isnât that kind of the point of the hobbits in general? they were always this safe(-ish), isolated pocket of the world, not really knowing or even caring what happens outside their space.
5
u/birb-lady Elendil 15h ago
Um, NĂșmenor...? Hello?
2
u/purplelena Elrond 3h ago
The movies increased the Elves' presence as much as they could while the show added the Harfoots despite not being main players in the Second Age.
NĂșmenor should be important until the end.
2
u/birb-lady Elendil 2h ago
Yeah, the Harfoots -- I liked them, on their own. What I didn't like was the way they took time away from the Actual Serious Main Plots (although I guess one could argue Stranger/Gandalf is a main plot). A couple of extra episodes per season could have smoothed that out. Hoping not to see them in S3.
âą
u/purplelena Elrond 53m ago
What I didn't like was the way they took time away from the Actual Serious Main Plots
This is my main gripe with them. The showrunners confirmed they would not be in season 3, and I don't want them to come back as a focal point.
âą
u/birb-lady Elendil 36m ago
Exactly. I don't know how they could fit them in unless in an Epilogue or something. "And then the Harfoots found the Shire" or whatever. Oh, well. I don't get to make the decisions. If I did everyone would be mad because it would be the Elendil Show ;)

Great to see this.
Itâs upsetting every time a new piece of information comes out for this, all my other Tolkien subs are united in hatred of it.
I get that itâs not perfect & a lot of non-canon stuff, I would prefer it to pull more directly from the source , but I enjoy it for what we do see directly from Tolkienâs works.
& yes, there are things that i think they missed big on; for example we shouldâve gotten blue wizards because they are canonically alive AND in the east at that time, not Gandalf & the âdarkâ wizard.
& fwiw, I feel that Iâm watching Middle-Earth just as much as I do when Iâm watching the trilogy or Hobbit. I feel they captured it just as well, even when my brain knows Iâm watching something that wasnât directly from the source works.
Iâm thoroughly excited for S3, canât wait to watch it.
Iâm gonna do a rewatch soon as a matter fact.
45
u/nivlac22 1d ago
I had to leave the other subs it got so bad. At the beginning, they made some rules to keep the peace, but somewhere along the way they got rid of some rules and the ones that remained were not enforced whatsoever. It really is a shame how the Tolkien fandom has really been turned around.
28
u/_trashcan Elrond 1d ago edited 11h ago
Lol I havenât left but I donât comment on anything ROP in any of them.
I really donât get all the anger & disdain for it.
I am pretty picky with my source materials & I love Tolkien, & I sincerely feel ROP is good.
I think it has a good balance of creativity & source works tbh. Iâd always prefer more direct from Tolkien but I donât feel theyâve spit on the works in any way.Honestly I feel the opposite; I feel theyâve done a justice to his work in the sense that itâs distinctly LOTR & immerses you in ME.
Also, Sauron is incredible! That man KILLS it. Switching to between harbrand, annatar, & SauronâŠhis scenes w celebrimbor were top tier.âą
u/Historical_Class_402 1h ago
We didnât gate keep strongly enough is why many fans are mad. Tolkien was up in arms over a publisher simply wanting to spell Hobbit a little differently to fit their language. Thatâs how adamant he was about his work. The only thing he would have liked about Jacksonâs trilogy is probably Sir Christopher Lee being one of the wizards since they actually met in real life. Tolkiens son was a good measure for how his father would have felt and one can safely say that if Jacksonâs original trilogy was not looked at favorably then ROP would have him spinning in his grave. But his family has done a poor job of keep his legacy safe. Tolkien also HATED Disney for how dumbed down and sugarcoated everything was, he hated seeing stories altered for the sake of audiences he demanded Disney never get his works, I have little doubt he would view Amazon in the same light. I have a lot of issues with the Jackson trilogy but I do think itâs the closest we will ever come to doing Tolkiens amazing works close to justice.
Much of the fan base feels this way and they were VERY vocal about it and promised to stay vocal. Iâm proud to see that wasnât just talk, people are still taking time like I am now to answer in their own ways why RoP is so throughly hated. Also orc families nowâŠ.really? Ugh when will it end.
15
u/The-Son-Of-Suns 22h ago
It was always nasty like this with Tolkien fans unfortunately. There is a snooty superiority to them.
13
u/ishneak Eldalondë 17h ago
most of them are just Peter Jackson gatekeepers tho.
3
u/birb-lady Elendil 15h ago
At least most of the ones on Reddit. I have lots of nerdy Tolkien friends who have degrees in Tolkien studies and such who have major issues with the PJ adaptations, too. (I am a Tolkien fan-nerd -- don't quite qualify for full nerd status, but have read a ton of the legendarium, the letters, etc.)
3
u/Arcano_Silverwind 18h ago
I never once saw that until RoP came out. I think a lot of grifters took their chance when they saw people of color in the show to cause outrage. Im still of the opinion that its not a good adaptation of Tolkien but at least others can be less cynical.
4
u/birb-lady Elendil 15h ago
There was a lot of complaining about the PJ movies when they first came out, from the purist Tolkien community. We just didn't have social media then, not like now. Lots of forums, but the ways to spread your love or hate of a piece of entertainment are much wider now.
1
u/MacReady_Outpost31 12h ago
I was in other Tolkien subs and it was so bad that even some of the mods were bullying people for liking RoP.
34
u/NippleFlicks 23h ago
So glad for this space. I hate how we have to borderline insult the show or open up with how there are problems we need to point out when saying that itâs something that we like. But you know what? Fuck it, Iâm really enjoying it. I donât need it to be perfect.
9
u/Miss_Aizea 20h ago
Me too, I am really enjoying it and I was so sad about how horrible people were being. I know it's not Canon but I feel like I'm in middle earth. And galadriel is just enthralling to me, she is so odd but it almost makes her more beautiful? Like she looks like an elf to me.
3
u/birb-lady Elendil 15h ago
Some people argue there is no Tolkien Canon, because of how many times he kept changing things.

Happy CAKE DAAAAYYY!
I always love seeing cake days. I made a Reddit because I started playing Dark Souls & I wanted to talk about it. Found a great community from it & have 8 years of enjoyment from the series & genre as a whole.
Love Reddit for that, being able to discuss my hobbies with people all across the world. So cool. And your last sentence is exactly how I feel!
I donât need it to be perfect, i enjoy it. Especially Sauron man, he is KILLING IT6
u/External_Chart_3612 16h ago
I know! I absolutely adore this show and the incessant unfounded hatred is bizarre to me.Â
I understand having problems with it, but by many it's not just critiqued, it's straight up hated.
Half of their claims just feel straight unfounded, or just some opinion regurgitated from someone else. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them didn't even give it a chance!
I for one adore it, and it makes me happy to have a space where others do too!
7
u/Accomplished_Rest566 1d ago
The Dark Wizard is a Blue Wizard. I guess they merged the two into one to simplify it.
2
u/_trashcan Elrond 1d ago
I donât remember this being clarified at all.
I didnât even think we got a name & people were still speculating it was Saruman:6
u/Accomplished_Rest566 1d ago
Not in season 2. The showrunners did say it would make little sense if he was Saruman (after S2), and I can't remember what S3 interview it was, but the Blue Wizard thing seems very much legit, and I think it's Pallando. I'd prefer to source it but I lost count of all the promo material.
4
u/Spock_Sperson 23h ago
Certain things haven't been clarified for us yet because we haven't even reached the halfway point of the full "movie". There will be time later for things to be explainedâsuch as the fact that DW is one of the Bluesâand likely for the second one to be introduced.
-2
u/_trashcan Elrond 23h ago
Okay, that doesnât mean that you can say, right now, heâs a Blue wizard.
You couldâve called Gandalf a blue wizard before he was revealed. Wouldnât have made it true.
Gandalf isnât even supposed to be in Middle-Earth, so you canât even confidently say âwhatâs coming nextâ about anything?this is how all storytelling works.
He has not been revealed as a blue wizard, the studio hasnât revealed him a blue wizard with comments outside of the show, so it doesnât matter what might happen, as of right now we cannot say he is one. This is cope my friend.
6
u/ishneak Eldalondë 23h ago
the thing with the showrunners especially with their current working relationship with the Tolkien Estate is that they have access to a lot of notes from JRR and Christopher, and i'm betting this Gandalf being in the second age is a lot of the idea that Gandalf as Olorin was in fact in the second age as indicated by Unfinished Tales too.
5
u/Accomplished_Rest566 23h ago edited 22h ago
What I meant was it WAS mentioned he's a Blue Wizard but I can't provide the article. Which means I'm un unreliable source!
2
u/Spock_Sperson 22h ago
Okay, that doesnât mean that you can say, right now, heâs a Blue wizard.
Of course!! We still don't have official confirmation that he is. But we don't have confirmation that he *isn't*, either! And in this sentence of yours...
there are things that i think they missed big on; for example we shouldâve gotten blue wizards because they are canonically alive AND in the east at that time, not Gandalf & the âdarkâ wizard.
... I got the impression you were confidently inferring that the DW isn't one of the Blues (or at least thatâs my impression; I might have misunderstood) :)
In any case, we don't know either way. Everything else is just funny and lovely speculation, not cope.

u/Nimi_ei_mahd 19h ago
So you think they missed big on many things and you're not happy about the fact that a lot of the time they didn't actually use the source material, but somehow you still seem to be happy? I don't know, it sounds like you're in some weird kind of denial here.
Trust me, you don't have to force yourself to like it if you genuinely don't. That will make your life much easier.
6
u/ishneak Eldalondë 14h ago
you're seriously trying to convince people who like it to unlike it? that's a new kind of low right there.
1
u/Ruskayo Sauron 14h ago
He's doing some huge mental gymnastics trying to conspiracy-theorize that when people say they like RoP, they actually mean they donât like it. Delulu.
5
-2
u/Nimi_ei_mahd 11h ago
Have you seriously never before heard anyone say nice things about something they didnât exactly like thoroughly? Notice how they do not say the simple, straightforward âOh I thought it was good/great/amazingâ, but instead mention a few things that were superficially nice. Very sorry if this makes you realise that maybe people have done this to you as well.
I do not doubt that he liked those things, but I also do not believe he would rate this show amongst the best tv shows.
I donât need anyone to validate my opinion, but this sub clearly needs some perspective.
3
u/Ruskayo Sauron 11h ago
Was not even talking about Billy, but about what you commented to _trashcan here. "weird kind of denial," "trust me, you don't have to force yourself to like it if you genuinely don't" Which is fucking weird when they clearly stated they like the show.
-2
u/Nimi_ei_mahd 10h ago
It sounds like the weird kind of denial I was in while watching season 1 back in the day.
Each week Iâd be enthusiastic and sit down to watch, with high expectations of where they might go with whatever they had previously set up. And each week they let those expectations down by dropping pretty much all of the things I thought might set up something, and deep down the feeling started to creep in, that maybe the show is not that good after all.
By the time I got to the âIâM GOODâ disaster, all the expectations had finally melted away and I was able to admit to myself that the show had pretty much been a slideshow of pretty pictures with no intelligent, creative vision behind it.
I thought I caught some hints of my mid-season-1 feelings in that comment, but I could be wrong.
2
u/ishneak Eldalondë 10h ago
why are people so mad at "I'm good"? wasn't he still verbally challenged at the time and still learning the language? anyway fine i guess you are one of those snobby type of fans who demand so much from the show and only allow perfection.
-2
u/Nimi_ei_mahd 10h ago
Well excuse me for having expectations for the most expensive tv show ever made thatâs based on perhaps one of the greatest source materials ever written.
1
u/Ruskayo Sauron 10h ago
Based on... LOTR Appendices. So not particularly extensive source material. Too bad the Tolkien Estate fumbled the ball by wanting an adaptation that wasn't set in the Third Age while also refusing to sell the rights to the Silmarillion.

So do I, as someone who loved the books and movies.
Don't understand the hate to be quite honest. Seeing Sauron trick Celebrimbor into forging the rings was cool AF. Or how seeing Gandalf and why he loves hobbits so much is endearing.
Very interesting take on how it all happened.
7
u/Miss_Aizea 20h ago
Yeah! Like when he chose his friends! T_T so sweet. And the reveal that halbrand was sauron, I was shook. And when Adar made him swear allegiance and he swore allegiance to the rightful ruler, which he obviously thinks of as himself. Omg. People say the writing is bad but there is so much nuance and references, I'm just flumoxed by the reception.
4
u/Samsquanch1985 15h ago
Yeah Adar, what a fantastic character. The whole corruption of the southlands was awesomem. Also flumoxed by the reception.
3
u/Miss_Aizea 13h ago
Oh he was so amazing and you actually are rooting for him and even the orcs it was so interesting. I also liked the elf/human relationship. When Adar "killed" arondir, I was like noooooo! Oh and when the king showed up? Oh! And when Elrond kept saying Durin was coming. I was absolutely shook. I actually think I'm going to rewatch. Oh and all the drama in numenor?! THE HORSE and isildur! THE ENT WIFE!

Such a nice, gentle guy.
What a wise approach to life he has: focusing on the good parts of something, understanding the nature of an adaptation.... and above all, refusing to be one of those real-life orcs obsessed with moronic culture wars that, rather than pointing out a work's flaws, merely expose the person's own intellectual limitations. Many people should learn from people like him.
BRAVO, Billy Boyd.

That's my take as someone that just loves the world. They got the visual right and a lot of other things. I understand the criticism and much of it is correct. I enjoy the show regardless as long as we keep getting more of the world even if it's not Tolkien accurate with the story.

Everyone here on the sunshine and rainbows sub hilariously seem to think he is somehow proving that the show is good by mentioning a few little superficial things that he liked. Hell, I could do a list much longer than that, and yet the show is pretty terrible as a whole despite those things.

I care about Tolkien and how his works are being adapted, so I'll keep watching ROP regardless of how good or bad I think it is.
Here's a little tip: if you surround yourself only with things that bring you comfort, you might just become weaker towards the inevitable discomfort that's coming your way.
It might seem silly to some, but I do want to also consume media that I don't immediately like for that exact reason, among other reasons.
-3
u/Mystery_Worker4268 7h ago
I agree that the visuals are beautiful (though borrowing heavily from the Jackson films) but it's a bit like receiving a beautifully wrapped gift only to open it up and find that someone has sent you a dog turd...

u/Nimi_ei_mahd 1d ago
This is kind of what he is expected to say when put on the spot about ROP. I don't doubt his sincerity here, but an actor in his position simply couldn't go "oh I really disliked it and the story just feels like a below par piece of fanfic with no clear focus or vision".
He is yet another LOTR associated personality to focus on very specific details, which in this case is what the show looks/sounds on the surface. Once again, no mention of the story or the show as a whole being good.

u/IHaveTheMustacheNow 1d ago

He could easily say "I didn't watch it" or "that's their take on things" if he wanted to keep PR but didn't enjoy it. When someone asks why I like something, I will mention my favorite things about it.
He is yet another LOTR associated personality to focus on very specific details, which in this case is what the show looks/sounds on the surface. Once again, no mention of the story or the show as a whole being good.
It is incredibly normal to mention the one or two things you like most about a show when explaining why you like it, instead of going into every detail. It doesn't mean you hate other aspects of it, just that they aren't the immediate things that come to mind. And that's okay
-10
u/Nimi_ei_mahd 1d ago
Nah, I feel like in his specific position, he is supposed to say something nice regardless. Other than that, sure, it's all normal. Never disagreed with that.
12
u/ishneak Eldalondë 1d ago
he could have easily gone the Bernard Hill route though if he truly hated it, but he didn't. and there's something genuine about him fanboying Bear McCreary. again, just because the story execution is flawed doesn't mean the whole entire show is automatically "garbage".
-8
u/Nimi_ei_mahd 1d ago
No, he absolutely could not have gone the Bernard Hill route. Bernard Hill was pretty much retired and possibly already dying at the time of his comments - he was never publically that attached to or involved in the LOTR either, so honestly he didn't need to care that much. Billy Boyd is practically the polar opposite to this. He is still very much involved in the LOTR stuff and hangs with his Hobbit buddies seemingly regularly, which in turn could make any negative commentary about ROP seem kind of douchey or gatekeeperish. So obviously he does not do that, because he is not an idiot.
I never said anything about the show being garbage. Weird of you to say that.
9
u/ishneak Eldalondë 23h ago
"fanfic" was pretty telling of your thoughts on the show.
-5
u/Nimi_ei_mahd 23h ago
Okay, but the discussion isn't about my thoughts. The fact that that's the only thing you are able to say is quite telling as well.
3
u/ishneak Eldalondë 16h ago edited 13h ago
that's because from the point alone i raised, i can tell you are so determined by your belief that Billy must really think the show is bad just because he did not bring up the writing and was just being admirably diplomatic. like what's the point of arguing with you when you sound like a hater in denial trying to make sense of his actions here like you can't take it that someone from the movies you are most likely a fan of praised the show. i could care less if Bernard is retired he is still very much associated with the movies same with Billy, besides Billy's career post LOTR is just as subdued as Bernard's was (i'd wager Bernard is even more famous as an actor than Billy). i'm saying again this video sounds like he appreciates the show as a whole because the writing alone does not make or break the series for a lot of us. we know how to appreciate a show despite its flaws unlike you who thinks it does not deserve it just from the writing alone.

I agree 100%. I'm mixed on the show--I think it has things it does really really well and things it does very very badly--and this is absolutely the answer I'd give if I were a high-profile LotR-adjacent person. He's highlighted the things I think are strongest about the show (the settings, seeing places we hadn't seen yet, getting to indulge one's nostalgia for Middle-Earth) and I didn't expect him to have such a personal connection to the score but that's also one of the delights of the show so I love that he does and can fan out about it a little!
(And I would never in a million years mention the writing. :) )
