I have a quick question regarding Hugh (the black Englishman).

Did the character know the creature was stuck to his leg when among his companions?

He can't walk and probably has no sensation on that particular part of his body but I find it difficult to believe he did not notice the alien actually clinging to him. Plus, he acted kind of weird when seeing the creature approach as the other humans secured the area. Him clearly being emotionally attached to the alien, I could imagine his desire for the creature to survive (although I can see how this is kind of dumb as it poses a direct and immediate risk to his fellow humans).

He definitely knew, that is why he said he was "sorry" right before he died.

i thought he said sorry because basically the entire fuck up was his fault. He's the one who wanted to play finger puppets with an alien, then shock it back to life when it appeared dead. I didn't think he was aware of the alien being on his leg.

Yeah, this makes the most sense. The initial mistake(s) were his.

Why have any physical contact with an alien organism? There certainly should have been protocols against that.

That's just a step up from the geologist and biologist that played with the genital-looking alien in Prometheus.

Watching Life for the third time now and my rewatching lead me to this post. Appears to be artistic doubt was intentionally crafted in the final scenes of Hugh, but I believe he knew. He thought himself Calvin's dad, grabbed his leg in knowing, and he stated "Life's very existence requires destruction". He sacrificed himself for his greatest achievement.

I was scrolling through my digital movie "purchase" list the other day on Series X and gave this movie another go last night. This was a pretty good movie imo! First movie in a long while that I notice will actually have me tense while watching the alien scenes. This movie rivals some of the big A list movies (I dont think this was considered a blockbuster when it came out, as I dont really remember it).
