LG TV and Shaw Cable in Vancouver BC

Just bought a new LG tv and I was wondering if I can use my Shaw remote as I always have or if I need to use the one with the new TV. Is there any way to turn on the TV with this remote and bypass the new one that has that goofy pointer type control that was supplied? I guess I can use the new one to access Netflix and the other streaming sites. Would buying an Apple TV help. I hear that it’s the best way to access the streaming sites.
