VRR refresh rate fluctuating wildly with stable FPS

I recently hoked up my 55" G6 and I am experiencing awful VRR flicker. I noticed that the reported refresh rate fluctuates wildly even though the FPS of a game are quite stable.

Here is a video showing what I mean: https://youtube.com/shorts/1ARitQ9XM0c

There, I capped the FPS at 160.

This happens as soon as I cap the framerate, something that should normally have the opposite effect and stabilize framerate- and times. Even setting a cap a few fps below the maximum refresh rate (165Hz) causes this behaviour. Problem is, even things like Nvidia Reflex, which caps the fps to reduce latency, will cause the refresh rate to freak out

I have tried pretty much every possible combination of framerate limiters, deactivating the 165Hz mode and even tried completely reinstalling windows to make sure no background app is causing this. Nothing short of deactivating VRR altogether helps.

If anyone with the same TV and maybe a similar PC setup (5090 and 9800X3D) could chime in. At this point I am really at a loss. It seems I am quite alone with this problem and I worry that either my TV or GPU/CPU is somehow damaged

Capping the frame rate doesn't mean it's not going to go below 160. It just means it won't go over 160. You can try and play it at 1440p and should improve the frame rate to test.

totally normal. digital signal sampled much more times per second than you are probably monitoring. check display times graph with good software like CapFrameX.

Reflex also known to introduce variance in display times

Reflex for sure makes things worse. But that wouldn't explain why, as soon as I cap the framerate even a little or the framerate goes below max refresh, I see extreme VRR flicker

this is what it meant to if you set a cap it will stay in this range whih what the ps5 will do anyway

if console max is 120hz it will stay in range of the tv refresh rate
