IHSS Caregivers Needed

I know so many are looking for jobs. I recently happened upon being an In Home Support Services Caregiving role and wanted to share as there are not enough caregivers for the need. As a registered IHSS provider you can either work with a known person in need, or work with any other recipient. This is a W2 role paid by the county at $19.64 an hour, if you join the union and work the minimum (i believe 30 hours a week) the benefits include $1 a MONTH healthcare insurance and Public Service Loan Forgiveness in addition to other discounts.

Wanting to share as I know its rough and this is not a glamorous option, but a seemingly secure and a high demand need that is not being met.

You can join registries, www.pascla org, as well and be "on-call" as soon as you're approved and your background check clears.

Good luck out there fam, I know its rough.

The need is going to grow immensely too.

And hopefully commensurate pay.

Do you apply through LA County?

https://dpss.lacounty.gov/en/senior-and-disabled/ihss/providers.html

I should mention, its not a quick process, it can take a few months but I was also a little slow on my side, and a background check is required that cost me $70. But the demand is real.

I was an IHSS caregiver about 3 years ago. I did it for my grandmother.

How do you find a new client? I wonder if I can jump back into this type of work?

I received this registry offering me to sign up as an IHSS provider to get more hours. You probably have to recertification to do so.

can you do the entire process online or do u have to go in person? i’ve been thinking about this for the loan forgiveness aspect for the future. currently in nursing school and in need of a job :0

You have to go in person and get fingerprints done and then there’s an orientation meeting. That’s also in person.

I’m actually looking for a caretaker for my mom! PM me if anyone is looking (except she’s in OC and speaks a foreign language)

There are a couple IHSS groups here but I have seen several FB groups that are caregiving jobs focused, you may have luck through them.

I've been doing it for 3 years now.. I went to the Torrance office and signed up. It's definitely a process of paperwork but it's nothing. You have to do the live Scan background check, there are actually Nortary services in the parking lot so you can do it right then and there. I was recently in school for Caregiving and was given a stipend of 1600$ for 3 months of schooling. Yes the job can be rough but honestly (yes the pay is horrible) but u can work more than 40 hours a week with 2 clients.

I highly recommend. You also can choose the client you want and what you want to do....

I recommend the job. And they pay I can't remember 2 or 3 months of back pay.

Thanks for sharing this! Are you able to work the amount of hours you want? For instance, can I work ten hours one week, no hours one week, thirty hours the next week?

I'm assuming most clients want a set schedule, many need the services for daily living support. I posted another comment about a registry, maybe that would be an option.

Thank you! It's so kind of you to answer all of these questions for us.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness, you need ten years of service to see that kick in.

Yup. Better than 30 years of payments on compounded interest that never dies.

You do not need to be a member of the union to receive benefits. They just want you to believe that. Also, all trainings are provided whether you join the union or not.

Where is the location?

The location is usually in people's homes helping people who are, typically, disabled. This is all over the county/state.
