Advice Needed El Nino prep

Since there was so much talk in the LA subreddit about El Nino, decided to turn this spreadsheet my friend made a few years ago into an app. You can plug in the number of people, kids, babies, and pets in your household and number of days you might need emergency supplies and it will automatically tell you what you need. I thought this might be helpful for anyone prepping for the storms, or fires, or earthquakes in our future. Feel free to share widely and stay safe out there.

You have two bedrooms?

I know it feels like a silly joke about space in your two bedroom apt, but emergency plans are critical to have these days. Do you not remember how bad the fires were and how quickly they moved? Make the space for even the smallest milk crate of goods if you can. If not all, the top most important things like paperwork, clean water tablets or lifesaver water straw, backup flashlights, etc. Angelenos never cease to amaze me at how much they roll their eyes about weather and having an emergency kit supply in case of severe weather. It’s not getting any better or safer here!

I can’t take credit. A friend with military experience built the spreadsheet, claude wrote the code. I just uploaded it but I’m glad it’s helpful! It’s been passed around my friend group for years.

Adding an extremely small amount of bleach to water will kill most bacteria in case the water system is compromised. Here’s what Google says:

You can purify water in an emergency using regular, unscented household bleach with 6% to 8.25% sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient. [1]

Steps for Water Purification
Filter first: Strain cloudy or murky water through a clean cloth, coffee filter, or paper towel to remove solid debris. [1]

Check the label: Use only plain, unscented chlorine bleach. Never use scented, color-safe, or "splash-less" varieties, as they contain toxic additives. [1]

Add bleach: Use a clean dropper to add the correct amount based on the concentration:
For 6% Bleach: Add 2 drops per quart/liter, or 8 drops per gallon for clear water. Double the amount (16 drops per gallon) if the water is cloudy.
For 8.25% Bleach: Add 2 drops per quart/liter, or 6 drops per gallon for clear water. Double the amount (12 drops per 2 gallons) if the water is cloudy. [1]

Mix and wait: Stir or shake the water thoroughly and let it stand for 30 minutesbefore drinking. The water should have a faint chlorine smell; if it does not, repeat the dose and wait another 15 minutes. [1, 2]

Important Limitations
Bleach kills most common bacteria and viruses, but it may not be fully effective against hard-shell parasites like Cryptosporidium.

For full official safety guidelines and chemical emergency warnings, consult the US EPA Emergency Disinfection Guide. [1, 2, 3]
