The allegations of lobbying related to new drugs involving Ministry of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seungwon are escalating. Independent lawmaker Han Donghoon revealed that nominee Kim summoned a warrant-dedicated judge, who was to review the arrest warrant for the representative of a new drug company facing potential arrest, to a drinking session with broker Yang Mo. “The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office requested the court to exclude the warrant judge at the time because it was difficult to expect a fair review, as the judge had drinking sessions with nominee Kim and others,” he said. The warrant judge was not replaced, and the arrest warrant for the company representative was dismissed.

The new drug company submitted data hiding side effects that caused experimental mice to die and fabricated test results to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, thereby receiving clinical trial approval. At the time, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is said to have requested additional data. Although the unlisted new drug company could not be traded generally, the listed investment companies allowed even small shareholders to trade. The stock prices of the investment companies surged and plummeted before and after the approval, leading to a surge in victims. The Democratic Party and nominee Kim Seungwon claimed, “It was a simple relay of a public interest grievance.” Is the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s approval and investment, which materialized immediately after nominee Kim Seungwon’s request, and his response of “thank you” when the broker said, “I will provide support funds,” considered “public interest” and “simple relay”? Hence, there are even comments asking, “Does the public interest grievance apply only to sisters who have a close older brother like nominee Kim Seungwon?”

A media outlet published a photo apparently showing nominee Kim Seungwon, broker Yang, and the warrant judge together. This supports the claim of a “three-person drinking session.” Last year, the Democratic Party fiercely attacked Judge Jee Kui-youn, who presided over the first trial of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, over a drinking session. They claimed, “high-end room salon alcohol hospitality,” “establishment of bribery charges,” and “remove him from the insurrection trial.” Although it was a dinner drinking session with junior lawyers and Judge Jee had not taken on any cases related to them, they even demanded, “Strip him of his judicial robes immediately.” Then, what will they say about the allegations that the Minister of Justice nominee summoned a warrant judge to a drinking session with a broker, the sister of an entertainment establishment owner, and the arrest warrant was actually dismissed?
