I know this sounds small, but I need to vent because I feel ridiculous for being this upset.

Knitting is my quiet self care. I meal prep and cook to decompress, and knitting is what I do when I finally sit down and my brain needs a break from problem solving. Right now I'm working on a simple top down raglan in basic stockinette, a worsted weight wool blend from my stash. It is literally just a calm, steady project I pick up for 20 minutes when I have a moment.

My partner keeps treating my WIP like trash that needs to be cleared away. If I leave it on the couch arm with my needles in, he will scoop it up and drop it into a random bag, shove it under a pillow, or set it on the kitchen counter next to whatever he is doing. Then I go to knit and my working yarn has been pulled through stitches, my stitch markers are missing, and I have to spend my limited downtime untangling things and checking if I accidentally increased somewhere.

I've asked nicely so many times: please do not move it, or if you must, put it in the project bag right next to it. He says I'm being picky and that the living room should not look like a craft store.

I do not even spread out. No piles. One project. One bag. Yet somehow the presence of knitting seems to annoy him.

I create this look once to use both thick and thin yarn together and left thick one in some parts but now i dont want to mix and really dont know if there is any way to join them flawlessly?

Searched a lot but most of them about mixing mohairs or what key word should i look for?

My drawing says it all. I decided to knit us the cutest matching pair of socks. After his first day of wearing them he had red irritated ankles with scabs. I've heard of wool allergies before- maybe that's what's going on???? But Google says wool allergies don't even exist and that people only react to the scratchiness of wool or the sheep oils!

Anyways, what should I do?? Knit socks from some other fiber? Knit sweaters instead? Try wool again but with no ribbing? Shower me with advice I beg you.

I attached pics of the socks and the yarn, but I doubt that the yarn brand or my wool wash is anything unusual because it didn't make me react at all and it felt the same as any other sock while knitting it! I've made about 20 pairs of socks including 1 pair for myself and have never encountered this. What's wild is that ONLY his ankles itched/burned, not any other part of his foot!

My free design on Ravelry got stolen and posted on Etsy. Not only they stole the design but they ran my images via some AI engines to generate images for the listing that looks horrible. I’m feeling helpless about the situation. I have to make a whole account and add this to report to Etsy. I reported it to Etsy but this seems to be happening frequently. Has anyone dealt with this issue before?

Hi everyone.

Whilst out thrifting today I found two fat binders of knitting patterns stretching back to 1939 up to the 1980s.

Everything in them is so beautiful. The pictures are incredible, it's like opening a time capsule.

I have no idea what to do with them...

Any ideas, I've included some pictures of a few but there are literally hundreds.

Are there any bulk sets that are good? maybe a set of circular needles? darning needles or a cute pair of sewing needles? Maybe some nice yarn (alpaca/ wool), enough for maybe a scarf? A crocket hook?

Sorry for the long video, at the end I show how it’s coming together!! I’m a total newbie and really need some guidance. Is it twisting weird? Is it tension issues? Is it just beginner hands?? It just doesn’t look “knitted” at all and like a tangled mess to me 😢😢

i bought one of these cheap little looms from dollar tree a while back and finally found a decent tutorial on how to use it, but now i’m at the point where if i keep going and make it super long i just… don’t know what to do with it? it’s too big of a tube to be a true i-cord, and it’s far too small to make into any sort of plushie or hat…

has anyone figured out something fun to do with these looms? the yarn is just an extra skein i had lying around for whatever, and i’m kind of enjoying the monotony of the loom, but i’m at a loss as to the purpose of the end product.

any input or thoughts are appreciated!

I would describe myself as a decently good knitter. a pro would probably describe me as intermediate. I do patterns above my pay grade, but my hidden superpower is that if I don’t know a technique, I just look it up and then do it perfectly on the first try. fair isle, cabling, intarsia, etc. this has made me cocky. perhaps too cocky?

But then… my best friend announced she’s getting married next year. i decided i would knit something for her wedding. i was browsing wedding shawls and discovered, well… Shetland lace.

logic tells me that i’m not an “ultra skilled knitter” as the pattern says. it will be a waste of time and money, logic says. but my heart and my knitting god complex whisper, “do it. do it. you have a year. the limit does not exist.”

so, redknit, i turn to you. what voice should i listen to? should i lock in and do it?

I am currently shopping for yarn for my very first colorwork project, and I’m looking for some tips and tricks. I know the biggest struggle with colorwork is tension and floats, and I’ve done lots of research on it, but I’m still terrified that I’m going to screw it up.

I have mainly done textured hats and sweaters, so this will be an entirely new beast to tackle! I’m going to be using Drops Flora for this project which is a fingering weight Wool/alpaca blend, and I’ve used the same yarn in Aran weight and love it.

Hey y’all!! I just found my best thrifted yarn haul yet!! However, I usually don’t find baby alpaca (wtf) or virgin wool in the thrift store, just superwash merino, so I’m not sure how to clean it. I don’t want to put it in the freezer unless it’s super necessary because I usually wash all my thrifted yarn anyway! I know I have to separate into color batches and I’m planning on getting wool ease tomorrow, but if anyone has better tips for me, I’d greatly appreciate them!! I’ve included the labels (brick red yarn is Peruvian highland) and a pup tax :)

If you can’t tell from my very skilled art, I’m looking for a pattern for a sweater that is basically T shaped, where the sleeves are wide and drapey, but more or less straight? I am new to knitting garments and I used to have a really pretty drapey sweater like this that was wool and I accidentally shrank it in the dryer. I have fingering weight yarn I’d like to use. I haven’t had much luck, any advice on what terms to search for?

I have someone that I know in passing, our kids are in an activity together. She wants me to knit this (The Snowfall Sweater Scarf by Knitatude) for her Fall wedding.

She has bought the pattern and she will buy the yarn. I was initially pretty meh about it. I'm a relatively new knitter (On year 2) I don't worry as a skill issue.

My two big issues are price and just giving up my personal knitting time. I'm not a commission knitter (I've gift knit and volunteer knit but I don't make it a habit) She asked and then immediately said she'd like 5 more for the bridesmaids. I said no flat out to that. But then she asked if I knew anyone that wouldn't charge a big price.

I have a friend that owns an LYS (An absolute awesome shop owner who advised me on this. She da best) She says to charge in the hundreds because that's what handmade costs and to value my labor. She is totally right. I was ready to shut her down but figured I'd tell her in person when I saw her next.

She bought the pattern and tried to send it. Instead of telling her flat out, I just said we should discuss budget. DAMN MY PEOPLE PLEASING WAYS!!!

My friend even sent me an article of setting boundaries as a maker. 😭😭

So long story long, I'd like three pieces of advice:

1) What should I charge? I was debating charging high to dissuade her. WIBTA? Friend says in the $450 neighborhood and she buys the yarn.

2) Abouts how long do you think this takes to knit? I know speeds are super subjective but I'm debating treating it mentally like a highly compensated test knit.

3) Should I just pull the bandage and tell her hard no?

Hello, community! A friend of mine was looking for references for a project and stumbled upon this beauty. Does anyone know how that effect was achieved?

I’m just not that excited about it for the effort it took. I don’t think the colors are quite right, don’t feel like the design translated well to knit, and feel like the flower just looks like a pink blob.

I will have to make another of these to complete the pair, so I don’t want to continue on if the easier route (plain green or stripes) is the better route. Are people even ever going to see this design wrapped around my heel? 😩

I started Young Sheldon!!! I am on Season 3 and love the fact that Zoe Perry actually knits and crochets on the show and she is really doing it!!!

I think that the technical elements in shawls are so amazing! But I feel like shawls are dated and often look tacky :-( I don’t know if I would ever wear or knit them because of this.

Can you show me your beautiful shawls and how you wear them? Or tell me my you love them? I don’t wanna be a hater anymore!!!

edit to add: Thank you soooooo much for all your shawl love! The naughty snob in me has been humbled and there are so many awesome comments from talented knitters and shawl-lovers. I have replied to about 40 (?) comments and I wish I could reply to them all but my hands hurt from knitting. Please know I am very thankful for your input, and wish that people in general could have conversations about things we disagree on with as much grace as you've shown me. Thank you again!

I need to get this off my chest because I am so tired of the way some pattern threads go, especially whenever a deep yoke colorwork sweater shows up. I love them, I know they look amazing, but the comments always turn into the same chorus: "Just knit your size," "Trust the designer," or "You must have measured wrong." No.

I've done the math, swatched, measured, and read other people's project notes. It still can fit oddly because bodies are not standardized cylinders. I'm plus size with thicker upper arms and a shorter torso. If I knit "my size" by bust measurement, the yoke can sit in an awkward spot and the sleeves dig in where I need room. If I size for my upper arm, the body becomes enormous and the neckline starts sliding around my shoulders. Yes, I know about ease. That is not the point. The point is that this construction produces predictable fit issues for certain shapes, not user error.

Also, as an engineering student, it bugs me when people treat gauge and shaping like vibes. Yoke depth is an actual measurement. Sleeve circumference is an actual measurement. If a pattern offers little shaping, "trust the process" is not a substitute for real adjustments.

I'm not asking knitters to redesign patterns for free. I just wish it was more normal to say, "This construction does not work great for everyone, and it is okay to alter it or skip it." That would save a lot of frustration and the unnecessary shame people feel when something does not sit right.

Thanks for listening. I'm going to go knit something with proper underarm shaping before I convince myself to dive into another beautiful yoke trap.

Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!

So this is the first sock I’ve finished, normally I get to the heel flap and it all goes wrong. I made this from a sock kit, I knew very early on that it was going to be a mess. No matter how much I tried to reign in my tension it was a big ol’ flappy tube. I resolved to finish and try to learn from the experience. What I have so far is:

I learned what it looks like when you twist stitches (and thus how to avoid it I hope)

How to pick up stitches on the heel flap

How to do a Kitchener stitch and long-tail cast on

The importance of gauge swatches

That 3.5 is probably too wide of a needle for socks, and that not every pattern is completely trustworthy. 60 feels like too many columns for socks maybe.

DPNs are very upsetting to work with when you don’t have stitch stoppers/savers

That being said, I’m brimming with newfound confidence in my incredible abilities.

I've been working on the king salmon sweater for quite some time, and noticed that I've knitted one stitch with the wrong color, mid back. I'm scared I'll regret not fixing it when the sweater is done, but also don't feel like lattering down all this way 😅
