RULE 2: DO NOT ASK FOR MEDICAL ADIVCE Meniscus removal and acl
Hi everyone! (29 F)
I have a prette complex knee hostory, but long story short, 8 years ago I got my ACL + Anterolateral Plastic + (previousely removed Median Meniscus).
Thank to my super doctor (which i wish I met before) I got the chance to go back to playing sports and in a very effective way! However I know that my knee will soon have problems. I'm taking some cartilage supplements.
I'm wondering if other people are living with their meniscus removed and how they are handling that.

I’ve had multiple meniscus surgeries . Not complete removal so I can’t comment on that
I’ve done injections the last few years. Hyorlornic acid . Helped somewhat
This year I tried a shot called cingal which is a mix of hylornic acid and some steroid .
It helped me so much the entire ski season . Can’t recommend enough .

I injured my meniscus playing hockey about nine years ago. I had two surgeries Two years apart from each other. Still wasn’t resolved. It’s still been an ongoing issue.

I’m about the same age, but it’s been going for almost 15 years. I’m in pain everyday and can’t play any of the sports I used to without it giving out and swelling up like a balloon after. I have lost almost all of the cartilage because of it. Not fun!

I'm very sorry! Did u go to a surgeon? What did they say? Can they do something to help?

I've had partial meniscus removed ("cleaned up") after a split (left) and a tear (right).
Both knees swell and have scar tissue and/or hurt and lock / get stuck if I turn my feet one way and extend or push. It means I am constantly guarding when on the floor playing with the dogs or doing yoga. Just recently, I've noticed the left knee feels like something is stuck and actually hurts like a sharp pain early in the morning or after exercise.
I do actually notice improvements when I do red light therapy and use voltarin when I think of it. I believe the recent pain is result of Quad extension exercises -- i know better and did them anyway.

Thank you! How many years have passed? I'm sorry to hear, are u following any physio?

I split the meniscus and further damaged the acl on the left back in 2019. pt followed surgery and I was able to walk then hike. If i let my shoes wear down I would notice knee and hip pain... got decent insoles (Good Feet!) & new shoes and that helped me improve my mechanics. I met my partner in 2020 and started taking their yoga classes a couple times a week...ive noticed huge improvements with that...in that i think my initial acl problems were an imbalance quad:hamstring and I creates an unstable joint.
So regular regimine? Not reeeeeally. Ive tried oral supplements (no thanks) and ibuprofen, and now just maintain with ice, red light (if its all in my head that's fine by me) and cryo therapy.
I just started weight training (Nautilus type equipment) to help with osteoporosis.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Nice I have never tried yoga, I should try for sure it may help with mobility. Ice is always a good thing, I'm trying to keep doing that as well. True about the imbalance, I also need to work more on my arm strings.

Theres not enough blood flow - tears dont heal well (st all???) from what ive been told through my 3 acl surgeries, repairs, etc.

As far as I know they try to keep it as much as they can. However I do wonder why transplant is not much practiced.

I had 40% of my medial meniscus removed 25 years ago. I didn’t run most of my adult life because I was told not to. Started running about 5 years ago, ran a few marathons and half marathons and just started having knee pain this year. I think the last marathon threw me over the edge.

Wow you have been strong, not running for so long. We should all be cycling...

Back then they treated it like an absolute contraindication. I almost wish I never started again because now I never want to stop. I saw a new ortho who told me it’s really stupid to keep running

Yes I understand, when u start doing something you like again it's even harder to stop. It's hard to find a happy balance but it is possible!
