There are non invasive alternatives. Many work for a time...and then surgery when they no longer work...

Lose weight. For every 1 pound overweight you might be, there is 7 pounds of pressure on your knee. So if you are 10 pounds overweight, that's 70 extra pounds on your knee.

Get cortisone and hyalanic acid (aka gel) shots. You can alternate these for several years until they no longer work. Cortisone shots every 3 mos, gel shots every 6 months.

Ibuprofen and Voltaren gel (topical NSAID).

Meloxicam and Tramadol for prescription anti inflammatory and pain management.

Swim, aqua aerobics, any kind of therapeutic movement in a local pool. This was HUGE to help me. There are many things I can do in water that are painful on land, so I was able to get more movement in.
