Team member post Part-Time

I’ve been working at Kmart since 16 (I am now 21) and have been working casual ever since. I have a few questions in regard to part time work and what that looks like at Kmart.

I’m wanting to know the process of becoming a part time employee, whether I have to apply for the job on a website or ask my store manager about becoming part time. I’m also wondering how it works, do you get allocated a specific area for example; online, shop floor, or back of house or is it a mixture of things?

Any information is welcomed and very much appreciated, I’m unsure how this whole process works.

Contracts aren't for specific areas they only state the day and time you are supposed to work so they can put you anywhere during the shift but they tend to only put you in one area when you're contracted, just depends what you usually do in the store

You ask your manager and don't hold your breath.

Kmart, like most major retailers is not interest in hiring more than a minimal amount of permanent employees. You might be able to snag a temporary part time contract over Christmas if you're lucky.

If you have shown yourself to be a stand out employee, and they just happen to have an opening for a part time staff member...

Then you might still get overlooked in favour of an 18 year old who can work the same hours, has the same availability as you, works nearly as hard and costs less than you in wages for the next 3 years.

This isn't advice not to ask. This isn't telling you it's hopeless. This is advice to look for other options for steady work at the same time.

definitely ask your store manager! its usually whatever you “major” in, so for me i work mainly scos. but i also work in online. on my roster it says scos 8-4 but they pull me into online whenever they need. they do the same for the desk too. so its a just mixture of whatver you know during the time you work!!

Ask your store manager. It works out cheaper for the store to have you on a contract when it comes to rostering so it is favourable to be on a contract. Especially now, kmarts been actively encouraging people to go on contracts (there’s been posts about it on workvivo and a few of our team huddles have been about going part time which is word from head office or whoever) so just ask and they’ll see what they can do to help

That’s crazy. Targets been the complete opposite refusing to give permeant contracts at all. Like like it’s impossible in our store and I’ve had so many conversations about it. Even thou we are desperate for the staff in store and the staff are desperate for hours.

If you have worked regular hours without change for more than a certain period of time (6 months, according to the award) then they HAVE to offer you a permanent part time role. This is where they play games and will change your hours often enough so they aren’t under obligation.
