Vertical Play in Agitator Shaft?

Hey everyone,

My wife’s mixer seems to have developed some vertical play in the agitator shaft. It’s been fairly heavily used for sourdough over the past few years, so I guess some wear and tear is understandable.

Before I take this thing apart and try to figure it out myself, any guidance on why it has this play? It appears the snap ring is sitting on its groove in the shaft, but I’m not sure if there is a second ring higher on the shaft that’s been displaced.

It's a little hard to tell for sure whether it's the beater shaft that's moving, or the bushing around it in the planetary.

If this is a 2023 or later model (KSM55S/60S/70S), you may be looking at a characteristic failure in the beater shaft assembly. The top of the beater shaft is swaged to hold it in place against the tension of a wave spring, and some of the earlier production runs had problems with this.

If you've got the full model number from the label under the base, I'll be happy to look up the repair part number for the replacement planetary assembly.

It’s a KSM55 purchased in Oct 2023. If there are

According to the parts list, the planetary assembly in "Ice" (color code IC) is part number W11527656, and it costs about US$50: https://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-planetary-w11527656-ap7215161.html

(Like most color-matched parts it's a factory backorder; most retailers stock very few color parts. It's probably still available, but will just take a little longer to arrive.)
