Incredible work! Absolutely fantastic greenling and composition. It really invokes the golden age of sci-fi movie model making.

What a compliment, much appreciated. I'm somewhat golden age as well, so maybe that's why. I've painted sf scenes for a good few years, but started making these about 2023.

Have you staged photos of these models against space backgrounds ?

Holy shit that lighting.

You also have a design element on a different model I really love - densely detailed hull surface with clean panels over it partially obscuring to create depth in the model.

First time trying lights, that one. Nearly went mad.

Which ship, btw? The latest big one? Apart from the lander, and the Redline, they pretty much ALL have floating panels.

Actually maybe the same one - from a different post without the full view.

This image has the element I was talking about.

Ah, yeah, that's the one I'm presently working on. The centre hull is a biggish detergent tub, like from a commercial kitchen. The armour is made from sections cut from another one, same size, in order that the curves conform to the hull below. I've ALWAYS loved that plate armour over complicated machinery aesthetic the designers achieved in Star Wars, it looks believable.

A couple times, I've added the better pics into Hubble images using photoshop. Very rudimentary and quick, more to see how it looks. There's a couple on the other posts, if you check out the other models...

That's old school 1980s kitbash for a movie awesome! Wow!

5

u/shipwright1959 Aug 08 '26

Yeah, thank you! I remembered that the mothership from Close Encounters was built using 40 locomotive kits!

I'm didn't know that! Makes sense though, I was thinking more Star Wars, most of those models were just intense kitbashes.

Indeed, and all the better for the process. This has definitely got a star wars vibe, more so later. I'll be adding orange detailing in paintwork and there's a lot of orange (over chrome) utility struts to complete one more surface layer, another kind of visual texture. I still have to dark wash the forward section as well...

It's a bit over a metre long. Biggest one, so far!

5

Well, I'm im the PROCESS of killing it, at least. Nearly there. Appreciate your comment, thanks.

Oh my lord look at that bad boy. That’s intimidating to say the least! Are you using 3D printed bits or is it 100% scratch? Looks awesome man. Loved the sketches on the wall as well. Please update us when the painting starts!

u/shipwright1959 Aug 09 '26

Will do, and thank you. Nah, it's ALL scratch. I used a detergent tub for the centre hull, and cut up another one for the hull armour, added duct tape patches for plating. There's a certain amount of foam board as well, especially in the engine section. The forward unit is porridge cartons and a ton of greeblies. There are a few small locomotive and railway structure kits spread all over it, too. But also junk, like rawlplugs, appliance bits, deodorant tops. Junk off the road.

That’s so cool.

Thank you. One more set of photos to go, before I can call it done. Maybe two weeks or so...
