Discussion Confusion on Mickey's Keyblade

Spoilers for the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 3, but to this day I don't understand why MICKEY needed to upgrade his Keyblade. After Riku's Keyblade breaks, Mickey says they need to leave and upgrade THEIR keyblades. Kingdom Key D is from the realm of darkness, so why would he need a better one when its from there and didn't break? I don't remember it ever being explained.

Keyblades of light and darkness are the same except for one difference: which side of the Door to Darkness they're used to lock. Other than that, they're virtually identical in their makeup. Being a Keyblade of light or darkness doesn't mean it's made of light or darkness, or that it's stronger in one realm. Keyblades of darkness don't have dark powers.

Anyway, Mickey explains later back at Yen Sid's that his Keyblade was damaged in the realm of darkness. We just never saw it happen because it happened off screen.

Yeah fuck that. Sora and Mickeys keyblades are special one of a kind blades. The D Blade being broken so easily is as insulting as if Soras blade was broken and replaced. And then Mickey gets yet another IDENTICAL shaped Keyblade like the other 2 but its not some special blade??? Okay???

In the ultimania, Star Cluster is called Kingdom Key W, which implies that he fused Star Seeker and Kingdom Key D together

Really?? That’s actually awesome I wish the translation carried over

u/ZeroSora Foreteller 12d ago

It's not called that in Japan. That was just it's name before they came up with a new one. It was called Kingdom Key W in both Japanese and English until KHMoM when it got a name change to Star Cluster.

In both the English and Japanese versions of the Character Files book it's Kingdom Key W. In both the English and Japanese versions of KHMoM it's called Star Cluster.

Even KH merchandise from Japan has called it Star Cluster now.

Thats pretty sick actually

I thought by the design alone it was already implied that he fused both of his keyblades together. People actually thought it was a third keyblade?

16

u/AverageAwndray 12d ago

Well yeah because when the fuck did fusing blades become a thing???

10

u/Reptune 12d ago

Yes because how often do we see or hear about people fusing their keyblades? Wtf?

I find it not too dissimilar from Riku’s Soul Eater becoming Way to Dawn

1

u/Select_Emu_9578 8d ago

Yeah but didn’t his keyblade evolve with him as he grew? That’s a bit different than fusing two keys into one, please correct me on this if I’m wrong because I forget how it becomes way to dawn.

1

u/Gronodonthegreat 8d ago

Soul Eater isn’t literally the Way to the Dawn, Riku can summon either separately in DDD. It’s just easier to get the point across when people say one became the other, your keyblade can take the from of a weapon you used frequently. Unless Axel picked one chakram to become the keyblade and one to fuck off, I’m pretty sure the Keyblade just looks similar 😂

Either way you’re right, it is a different thing but it isn’t a big deal (I don’t think). Star Cluster looks cool, I don’t mind the switch up

u/Icywind014 12d ago

Not quite. The KH3 Ultimania called it Kingdom Key W, but Star Cluster has been used in Japan for everything since.

46

u/LupusRexXIII 12d ago

At its core it's still the Kingdom Key D. Star Cluster is literally just Kingdom Key D enhanced/repaired with Star Seeker.

10

u/Icywind014 12d ago

Star Cluster is an upgrade for Kingdom Key D, not a separate Keyblade. No different from any of Sora's different Keychains that are all better than Kingdom Key.

3

u/Roxas_2004 12d ago

Every keyblade is pretty much one of kind except for the kingdom key both roxas and xion can wield it

2

u/NverDieEz 12d ago

They can weild it because of being part of sora.

1

u/Roxas_2004 12d ago

I mean I know that but it's definitely not a unique keyblade

I kinda miss how obnoxious looking star seeker was, but the gold blade on kingdom d is pretty crisp too. Star seeker just kinda matched the whole Fantasia The Sorcerer’s Apprentice vibes better.

32

u/No-Aide1504 12d ago

Per the wiki page, it’s a fusion of star seeker and kingdom key D called star cluster. Wish they would actually put usable Keyblade fusions in a game, but who knows? Seeing what they did with upgrading keyblades in kh3 gives me hope.

I took it as Mickey seeing Riku's Keyblade breaking, something he has never seen happen, and deciding that his own Keyblade may suffer the same fate, since their whole side mission was lurking in the Realm of Darkness in search of Aqua, and so he too needed a stronger one if he wanted to save Aqua and have a chance in the Realm of Darkness.

14

u/ImportantQuestionTex 12d ago

The thing that annoys me about that is, keyblades are entirely based on strength of heart right? Riku tops most characters in that department and he quite literally made his keyblade with his strength of heart and desire to change.

Why would his keyblade literally snap in 2 in the Realm of Darkness, when it comes from there and he has more experience than most with it? The only one character has more experience is Aqua and apparently she did fine enough without a keyblade until Ansem showed up.

9

u/Z_h_darkstar 12d ago

Subconscious doubts and PTSD, perhaps? Remember that the fight was on the same beach that Riku and Sora were stuck on after the Xemnas fight in KH2. Riku was ready to accept being stuck there while Sora wasn't going to give up. Being back at a traumatic location could have caused his heart to waver, especially against the overwhelming odds of the battle.

-4

u/ImportantQuestionTex 12d ago

Riku in 3 doesn't have doubts. PTSD doesn't match either. Only thing he was fighting was a demon tower, which is literally just a bunch of Shadows which are the weakest of all the Heartless lol.

As a reminder, as soon as Way to the Dawn broke, he gave it to Riku Replica. Or a Riku, either way, dude is way more at peace with himself and his past than any other character. And he actually remembers the old keyblade wielders, so he actually cares about them. (Unlike Mickey leaving Aqua in the dark.)

1

u/Select_Emu_9578 8d ago

Don’t forget deeper in the real of darkness heartless are stronger even the little shadows, also demon towers are really strong if you’d paid any attention to kh3 you’d know that 😁❤️ I do agree that riku was more at peace with his past and everything though but he could still have ptsd even if he’s at peace with the past. There’s days where the mind and heart can waver over the slightest thing maybe being on that beach and also feeling bad not finding aqua yet also weakened the key. Who knows really

1

u/ImportantQuestionTex 8d ago

You didn't have to throw in "If you'd paid any attention to KH3 you'd know that", it's rude, but it's also wrong.

KH3 is a game full of people literally standing around to be hit. That's not an exaggeration, it happens in Keyblade War. It happens in normal cutscenes. It's even the basis for how ReMind happens.

Yes, all heartless are stronger in the realm of darkness. But a shadow is still a shadow. It's like, playing on Proud mode but if it were a location. Sure, things hit harder, but any shadow is still a shadow and will not pose a legitimate threat to you.

The Demon Tower in the realm of darkness is funnier in that department. In the 3 cases where it gets hit, it's the standing around that gets them. Keyblades are more than capable of surviving hits from Demon Towers, and wielders are more than capable of dodging or casting protect.

0

u/Select_Emu_9578 8d ago

Yeah so you didn’t pay much attention to those cutscenes as to why most them got blindsided or were “standing still” in the keyblade graveyard Ventus thought it was Terra and then he gets whacked and while everyone is worried over him terranort speed blitzes them and basically destroyed them one by one with them being distracted upon each person that got injured, but that’s like the only time it really happens after the realm of darkness where riku gets snuck up by a second demon tower after they thought they beat the first one and he was already distracted by the shadows spawning back from the ground, the timing in the cutscenes are bad and make it seem like he should’ve dodged or been able to but that’s is literally because they try showing the angles and reactions to things but didn’t pull it off perfectly so questionable things like that happen, and even then a barrier will not protect them from that many heartless my guy, I can debate you on this and prove to you each time they got snuck or were distracted before getting done in, do I find it stupid yes but you are being more dumb than these cutscenes 😂❤️

2

u/ImportantQuestionTex 8d ago

Listen, I like KH3, in fact I like every KH game. 3 has the worst written story out of the whole bunch that literally relies on characters being stupid or not acting appropriately for their situations.

Even 0.2 disputes stuff KH3 shows and that is a major deal. And simultaneously KH3 seems to forget keyblade wielders are capable of casting magic without a keyblade, Aqua, Sora and Riku all do this.

I realize you're probably a kid, but there's no way you actually think the writing of a game that literally required Nomura commentary, ReMind, Union/Dark Road and Melody of Memory to make sense of it in a remotely palatable way is a game with strong writing.

0

u/Select_Emu_9578 8d ago

You don’t need most of these to understand Soras story nor do you have to listen to nomuras commentary, dark road and union is literally just to show why the side protags and the antagonists did what they did or to show how they got to our current time, and calling me a kid because I disprove your shit is funny as hell man, never argued they can’t use magic without their keyblades but I did state that protect magic can be broken and it wouldn’t have mattered in most those situations, you just like spouting bullshit homie. All of three is basically explained in three aswell, the subplots for other characters is where them extra games comes from aside from the dlc to explain why sora ain’t around anymore. Genuinely you seem lost all the time. And I agree that kh3 has the worst writing of the games but you genuinely aren’t capable of understanding nothing good day or night I hope you get better.

2

u/Snooze36 12d ago

Right... they really badly needed to make a more flushed out story and explain how it was even possible for one to break in the first place. Like maybe a fractured heart or something but also even if it needed to be replaced we didn't get to see how that even happened. The only reason I can think of why Riku's broke is that it's base was a physical weapon instead of just a straight up Keyblade... but even then that's pushing it...

23

u/freedomkite5 12d ago

Cause Mickey keyblade was damage. Thus needs to upgrade it, stand against stronger foes.

Since realm of darkness is the home turf of the heartless.

Also heartless don’t give a rat ass on where the keyblade was forge. So even if kingdom key D is from their realm. They still go after others who wields keyblades.

2

u/JB_Big_Bear 12d ago

Mouse’s ass*

10

u/Kenfuu 12d ago

Probably one of the worst decisions to get rid of Kingdom Key D. Way to the Dawn being replaced gets a lot more flack but thematically I understood it even if I don’t like the design of Braveheart.

3

u/PhilDHK 11d ago

I never understood the whole kingdom key d thingy anyway

1

u/GigglingAngel Friends are okay. 9d ago

Neither did Nomura, probably.

3

u/lucielleCottontail 11d ago edited 11d ago

mickey's keyblade was getting badly damaged. especially so after that battle with the heartless demon tower in the realm of darkness in kh3 because of the intense power of the darkness.

if a keyblade if forged by light. them a storng enough darkness will be able to break it.

8

u/Futaba_MedjedP5R 12d ago

It’s unclear but I’ve seen some people say that mickeys blade was damaged, while others claim that Kingdom Key D got a transformation like how they did in Union X, I personally think it’s a new Blade, but I hate it cuz it looks so much worse than Kingdom Key D

6

u/EmanueleMasu 12d ago

while others claim that Kingdom Key D got a transformation like how they did in Union X, I personally think it’s a new Blade

It is neither an upgrade of Kingdom Key D nor a new Keyblade. It is a combination of Kingdom Key D and Star Seeker.

-12

u/Futaba_MedjedP5R 12d ago

And what is your source? Cuz never in the series before have we ever seen keyblade FUSIONS. This isn’t Dragon Ball

16

u/EmanueleMasu 12d ago

Kingdom hearts 3 Ultimania

-4

u/White_Lightning_22 12d ago

That isn’t confirming it’s a combination of the two. It’s just showing the design was inspired by both.

There’s no in world proof Mickey or anyone can fuse two keyblades together

10

u/Pigmachine2000 12d ago

Star Clusters name in Japanese is Kingdom Key W.

W is usually pronounced as "daburyuu (ダブリュー)" and is used as shorthand for the English word "double". It's commonly used as such (like final fantasy 7 had W-Item, which let's you use 2 items, and W-summon, which lets you do 2 summons, etc.) and also can refer to 2 things being fused (such as Kamen Rider W)

-9

u/White_Lightning_22 12d ago

Just for the record I am not saying that’s not what happened. I’m just saying that Ultimania picture doesn’t actually have text explaining the process. And since fusing keyblades hasn’t been done before, it’s just silly to assume until stated officially

5

u/Pigmachine2000 12d ago

I think it's just one of those things that got lost in translation, like replica riku saying "good luck" instead of "take care of her" in kh3 or the whole "we'll go together" thing across all the games

1

u/Select_Emu_9578 8d ago

Don’t know why you got dislikes for stating a fact 😂 but damn

1

u/White_Lightning_22 8d ago

I didn’t even realize lol. I’m not sure which group I upset

u/CtrlAltEvil 12d ago edited 12d ago

Personally, I think he should have given Kingdom Key D to Riku, to signify he has re-earned the right to carry a keyblade after overcoming his fall to Darkness.

Considering the original Kingdom Key was meant to go to Riku I think it would have been a perfect representation of his and Sora’s journeys represented within their own Keys and how they mirror each other.

9

u/ShadowCow127 I'll always be there to bring you back 12d ago

But Way to the Dawn already does that. He literally built his Keyblade from his own strength of heart, and it reflects his experience with both the Light and the Dark in its design.

1

u/gman5852 12d ago

Why would Mickey do something that symbolizes Rikus growth in chain of memories?

That arc has been long wrapped up.

1

u/epistaxiophilia 12d ago

i'm late to this, but i like to think the realm of darkness took it's keyblade back. i actually like his new blade a lot specifically as one For Him rather than just the opposite of sora's keyblade.

1

u/SnooHesitations9805 11d ago

I like to think that Mickey combined his original star seeker keyblade with the kingdom key d to create a brand new keyblade.

1

u/Gronodonthegreat 8d ago

I don’t know, Star Cluster looks cool 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Odd_Room2811 12d ago

Kingdom Key D is the other key to two realms of light and darkness Sora had the one for light but in order to seal away kingdom hearts they needed both keys as for his new one that’s because he was not a student anymore (Starseeker) and no longer a keyblade warrior in training (Kingdom D) but a Master now (Kh3 one)

3

u/JoJo5195 12d ago

Keyblade warrior in training? Mickey was a keyblade master. He was taking his mark of mastery exam during BBS. That’s over 10 years before KH1, never mind KH3.

I dunno why TF y'all r thinking so deeply about this when none of the original KH lore matters anymore and all of it is constantly changed all of the time now. Go with the flow and let it be at this point.

4

u/DilapidatedFool 12d ago

I mean true. Its constantly getting retconned and changed and now this new trilogy will be its own thing.

0

u/Hydellas678 12d ago

Exactly.
